Chapter 8: The Girl Who Never Existed
The silence after Gabriel spoke was unbearable.
It wasn’t the silence of people waiting for an answer.
It was the silence of people who already knew the answer would destroy something.
My name.
The one thing I had always believed belonged to me.
Claire Whitmore.
A name printed on contracts.
A name engraved on buildings.
A name spoken by thousands of people.
A name I had carried for thirty-eight years.
And now Gabriel was telling me it was a lie.
“What was my real name?””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Gabriel.
“Say it.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””
My voice cracked.
“Not after everything.””
Gabriel lowered his head.
“You were born Amelia Monroe.””
The world stopped.
I blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Waiting for something to change.
Nothing did.
“Monroe?””
I looked at him.
“Your last name?””
He nodded.
“My daughter.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
My daughter.
Not my father’s friend.
Not a stranger.
Not a man who gave me bread on a sidewalk.
His daughter.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
That confused me more than anything.
Because she looked like someone mourning something she lost.
“What is happening?””
My voice trembled.
“Why would I be your daughter?””
Gabriel took a slow breath.
“Because your father wasn’t your biological father.””
I felt the air disappear from my lungs.
“What?””
Vanessa looked away.
My mother closed her eyes.
Richard remained completely still.
The only person who looked unsurprised was Maya.
And that scared me.
“Explain.””
Gabriel looked at the ground.
“Your mother and I were married before Evelyn entered our lives.””
My head spun.
“Wait.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was the one who raised you after everything happened.””
I stared at her.
“You knew I wasn’t your daughter?””
She swallowed.
“I knew you were my daughter in every way that mattered.””
The sentence hurt.
Because part of me wanted to reject it.
But another part remembered every bedtime story.
Every scraped knee.
Every time she stayed awake beside my hospital bed.
Love had been real.
Even if the truth wasn’t.
I looked back at Gabriel.
“So my name was Amelia Monroe.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
His eyes moved toward the street.
Toward the place where everything had begun.
“Your mother died giving birth to you.””
My breath caught.
“I thought…”
“You thought Evelyn was your mother.””
I nodded.
Gabriel continued.
“After Vanessa died, I raised you alone.””
“Then why don’t I remember you?””
The pain on his face answered before his words did.
“Because someone erased those memories.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa answered.
“Me.””
Everyone turned.
Even Gabriel.
“What?””
Her face was full of shame.
“I did it.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
Vanessa wiped away a tear.
“Because you were being hunted.””
“By who?””
She looked at Richard.
“By people who wanted your father’s research.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Don’t put this all on me.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“They knew Gabriel had a daughter. They knew the research was connected to her.””
I touched my necklace.
“So they changed my identity.””
“Yes.””
“They erased my memories.””
“Yes.””
“And Evelyn became my mother.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I begged her to do it.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“You agreed?””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The pain in her voice was unbearable.
“I had already lost so much. I couldn’t let them take you too.””
I turned away.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had pain.
But I was the one who had lived inside the consequences.
A small laugh escaped me.
“So everyone saved me.””
Nobody moved.
“Everyone protected me.””
I looked around.
“And nobody thought I deserved the truth.””
My words broke through them.
Gabriel looked devastated.
“I was wrong.””
I looked at him.
The old man from the sidewalk.
The man who gave away his last piece of bread.
The man who had spent years searching for me.
“I spent my whole life wondering why nobody came back.””
His eyes filled.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t understand.””
My voice became softer.
“That little girl thought she wasn’t worth finding.””
The words hurt him.
Because he knew.
Because he had spent years carrying the same guilt.
“I looked for you.””
“I know.””
“I never stopped.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
The question was not angry anymore.
It was broken.
“Why did you let me believe nobody wanted me?””
Gabriel couldn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
Then Maya spoke.
Quietly.
“Because they weren’t the only ones who lied.””
Everyone turned.
She stood frozen.
Her face had changed.
No anger.
No confidence.
Only fear.
“What do you mean?”” I asked.
Maya looked at me.
“The woman who called you…”
She swallowed.
“She wasn’t my sister.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
“She was my mother.””
The words shocked everyone.
Maya continued.
“My real name isn’t Maya Carter.””
She looked at Gabriel.
“Do you remember a woman named Elena?””
Gabriel’s face changed.
Slowly.
Like a memory returning.
“Yes.””
Maya nodded.
“That was my mother.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Impossible.””
Maya looked at him.
“You know exactly who she was.””
A strange silence followed.
I looked at Richard.
“You knew?””
He didn’t answer.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
Maya laughed softly.
“Of course.””
She looked at me.
“You see the pattern now?””
I shook my head.
“What pattern?””
“Everyone around you has been connected from the beginning.””
The words made my skin crawl.
Maya continued.
“Your father.””
“Gabriel.””
“Your mother.””
“Richard.””
“Me.””
She pointed at herself.
“We are all part of the same story.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
This time, it wasn’t Gabriel’s.
It wasn’t Richard’s.
It was mine.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
An old recording.
My own voice.
But younger.
Terrified.
“Don’t trust them.””
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
“If you’re hearing this, they failed.””
I looked at Gabriel.
He looked just as shocked as I was.
“My name is Amelia Monroe.””
The voice continued.
“And I know what they did to me.””
I stopped breathing.
Because it was my voice.
But I had never said those words.
The recording continued.
“They changed my memories.””
A pause.
“They changed my name.””
Another pause.
“But they couldn’t change the truth.””
My hand shook.
Then my younger voice whispered:
“Someone inside the family betrayed me.””
Everyone became still.
The recording ended.
The screen went black.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody moved.
Then I looked at Gabriel.
“Who betrayed me?””
His face went pale.
Because he knew.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then Evelyn.
Then Richard.
Finally…
he looked at me.
“I thought it was your mother.””
Evelyn gasped.
“But I was wrong.””
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“Then who was it?””
Gabriel’s voice barely came out.
“The person who created the plan to save you.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“The person who erased your memories.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Gabriel said the name.
The name that shattered the last piece of my childhood.
“Vanessa Monroe.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
And whispered:
“I did it because I loved you.””
The street went silent.
May you like
Because the person who saved me…
was also the person who stole me from myself.
