Chapter 9: The Memory Hidden Inside Me

“I did it because I loved you.””

Vanessa’s words stayed in the air.

They should have sounded comforting.

They should have sounded like an explanation.

Instead, they felt like another wound.

Because love had become the excuse everyone used for taking things away from me.

My childhood.

My name.

My memories.

My choices.

I stared at Vanessa.

The woman who had been a ghost for twenty years.

The woman Gabriel once loved.

The woman who had rewritten my entire life.

“You erased me.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because they were coming for you.””

“Who?””

“The people who killed your father.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“That accusation again?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You know it’s true.””

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time, the confidence disappeared.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

The street became still.

Vanessa continued.

“Your father discovered that someone inside his organization was selling research to private companies.””

Gabriel nodded slowly.

“He suspected someone close.””

I looked at him.

“And you?””

He looked ashamed.

“I suspected everyone.””

“That includes Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I thought Gabriel believed I betrayed him.””

“You disappeared,” Gabriel said quietly.

“Because I was protecting Amelia.””

My body froze.

She used the name.

Not Claire.

Amelia.

A name that somehow felt both foreign and familiar.

“Stop calling me that.””

Vanessa’s expression broke.

“I know it hurts.””

“It doesn’t feel like my name.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

That was somehow worse.

Because she understood.

She understood what she had taken.

I looked at my hands.

The hands that had signed contracts.

Built companies.

Helped thousands of people.

Hands that belonged to someone I thought I knew.

“Who am I?””

The question came out quietly.

Nobody answered.

So I asked again.

“Who am I?””

Gabriel stepped forward.

“You are Claire Whitmore.””

I looked at him.

“And Amelia Monroe?””

“You are both.””

His voice was gentle.

“Names are not what make a person.””

I almost cried.

Because after everything, that was the first thing anyone said that felt true.

But truth wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

“I want my memories back.””

Vanessa looked frightened.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“No?””

She shook her head.

“Some memories were buried for a reason.””

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I know what happens when they return.””

I stepped closer.

“What happens?””

She hesitated.

“Pain.””

I laughed softly.

“I think I can handle pain.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I pointed around us.

“I really don’t.””

My voice rose.

“Because everyone else got to know my life except me.””

Nobody moved.

“You all had the truth.””

I looked at Gabriel.

“You knew you were my father.””

At Evelyn.

“You knew you weren’t my biological mother.””

At Vanessa.

“You knew you changed me.””

At Richard.

“You knew enough to hunt me.””

Then Maya.

“You knew enough to betray me.””

Maya flinched.

I looked away.

I didn’t even have anger left.

Only exhaustion.

Then my necklace began to warm.

I froze.

Everyone noticed.

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“Claire.””

The pendant glowed faintly beneath my fingers.

Not bright.

Not like a movie.

Something subtle.

Almost impossible.

But real.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“It’s responding.””

“To what?””

She looked at me.

“To you.””

The device in her hand started beeping.

A small screen appeared.

A series of numbers.

Gabriel stared.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa whispered:

“The memory lock.””

My heart raced.

“What is that?””

Nobody answered.

I grabbed Gabriel’s arm.

“What is that?””

He looked at me.

“It means your father didn’t just hide information in the necklace.””

My throat tightened.

“What did he hide?””

Gabriel swallowed.

“The final message.””

A small light appeared from the pendant.

Then my phone connected automatically.

A file appeared.

No sender.

No title.

Just one word.

*AMELIA.*

My hands shook.

I pressed it.

The screen went dark.

Then a video began.

The image was blurry.

Old.

A woman appeared.

Me.

But younger.

Not a child.

A teenager.

Maybe sixteen years old.

I stopped breathing.

The girl on the screen looked terrified.

But she looked like me.

The same eyes.

The same face.

The same scar near my eyebrow.

My younger self stared into the camera.

“If you are watching this…”

Her voice trembled.

“…then I forgot again.””

Nobody moved.

My younger voice continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

She looked behind her.

Like she was afraid someone was nearby.

“My father told me the truth.””

The screen flickered.

“He told me who was trying to destroy him.””

My younger self looked directly into the camera.

“And it wasn’t Richard.””

Everyone froze.

Richard looked shocked.

The video continued.

“It wasn’t Gabriel.””

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“It wasn’t Evelyn.””

My mother covered her mouth.

The younger version of me whispered:

“The person who betrayed us was someone nobody suspected.””

The screen glitched.

A shadow moved behind her.

Then she said:

“Because she was the one helping us.””

My heart pounded.

The video paused.

A name appeared.

*VANESSA MONROE.*

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t move.

Then the video continued.

“She convinced everyone she was saving me.””

My younger voice shook.

“But she was the one who made the deal.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What deal?””

The video showed my younger self crying.

“She promised them she would erase my memories if they let me live.””

Nobody spoke.

The air disappeared.

I looked at Vanessa.

The woman who claimed she saved me.

The woman who admitted she erased me.

The woman who now looked completely broken.

“Is this true?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Gabriel looked at her.

“Vanessa…”

She started crying.

“I had no choice.””

My chest tightened.

“There it is again.””

I shook my head.

“The same words.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Claire, please.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You didn’t save me.””

Her tears fell.

“I did.””

“You stole my life.””

“I gave you a life.””

“A life that wasn’t mine.””

She closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was real.

But I couldn’t let that erase what happened.

The video continued.

My younger self appeared again.

“One more thing.””

She looked terrified.

“If I ever recover my memories…”

A pause.

“I need to know who helped Vanessa.””

The screen froze.

Then a final sentence appeared.

*THE PERSON WHO SIGNED THE AGREEMENT IS STILL CLOSE TO YOU.*

Everyone stared.

A new file opened.

A document.

A signature.

I zoomed in.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

I had seen it every day.

On reports.

On schedules.

On every message sent from my assistant.

The signature belonged to…

Maya.

Nobody spoke.

Maya stepped backward.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

Her face turned pale.

“I can explain.””

My heart sank.

“Of course you can.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were never my assistant, were you?””

She looked away.

The silence answered.

“Who are you?””

Maya’s face changed.

The person I knew disappeared.

And for the first time, I saw who she really was.

“My name is not Maya Carter.””

A pause.

“My name is Amelia Monroe.””

The world stopped.

I stared.

“No.””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I’m your sister.””

The words destroyed everything.

My name.

My memories.

My family.

And now…

my own identity.

May you like

Because the woman who stood beside me for ten years…

was the person who knew the truth about me before I ever did.
