Chapter 5: The Truth Buried Beneath the House
“Claire.””
The name hung in the air.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The police lights flashed against the windows.
Red.
Blue.
Red.
Blue.
But inside my house, everything felt frozen.
I stared at Vanessa.
My mind rejected the words before my heart could even process them.
“No.””
My voice came out quietly.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know how it sounds.””
“You’re saying Daniel killed my wife?””
She nodded slowly.
I stepped back.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to listen.””
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because my entire world had become something I couldn’t recognize.
“You lied to me for three years.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“You admit it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was scared.””
I looked at the detective.
Then back at her.
“Scared enough to let me think you were trying to steal my house?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew the answer.
The worst part was that I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
The woman I had trusted had hidden things.
The man I had never met had my son.
My dead wife had left behind secrets.
And Noah…
My son was somewhere in the dark, waiting for me.
Detective Carter stepped closer.
“Mr. Reed, we need to focus on getting your son back.””
He was right.
Whatever happened before didn’t matter if I couldn’t protect Noah now.
I looked at the screen where the video had ended.
“Daniel said he’s in my basement.””
The detective nodded.
“Does anyone else have access to your house?””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That was answer enough.
“Apparently.””
Carter turned to the officers.
“Search team inside. Nobody goes alone.””
I followed them into the house.
Every step felt different.
This was the same place where Noah had blown out birthday candles.
The same hallway where Claire used to hang family pictures.
But now every corner felt like it was hiding something.
We reached the basement door.
I stopped.
The door was slightly open.
I knew I had closed it earlier.
My hand tightened.
“Everyone stay back.””
Detective Carter nodded.
An officer moved ahead.
The door opened slowly.
The basement light flickered.
Nobody spoke.
Then we heard it.
A sound.
A small sound.
A chair moving.
“Noah!””
I rushed forward.
The officer grabbed my shoulder.
“Wait.””
I hated waiting.
Every second felt like a knife.
Then the officer entered.
A few seconds passed.
Then:
“Clear!””
I ran inside.
The basement was empty.
The chair from the video was there.
The table.
The camera.
But no Noah.
My heart sank.
On the table was something else.
A photograph.
I picked it up.
It was old.
A picture of Claire.
She was standing outside our house.
Holding Noah as a baby.
On the back was handwriting.
My wife’s handwriting.
*If you found this, it means he knows.*
My hands shook.
“Who is he?”” Detective Carter asked.
I turned the picture over.
There was another line.
*The person who smiles while destroying your family.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“Daniel.””
She nodded.
I looked around the basement.
“Where did he take Noah?””
Nobody answered.
Then I noticed something.
A loose floorboard.
Near the old storage shelves.
I walked toward it.
The detective followed.
“What is it?””
I pointed.
The board had been moved recently.
The officer lifted it carefully.
Underneath was a small metal box.
My heart started racing.
Another secret.
Another thing Claire had hidden.
Inside was a stack of documents.
Bank statements.
Contracts.
Photos.
And a small voice recorder.
I picked it up.
A label was written on it.
*For Marcus.*
I pressed play.
Static.
Then Claire’s voice.
My knees almost gave out.
“Marcus, if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
I hadn’t heard her voice in three years.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Her actual voice.
“I wanted to tell you everything. I tried.””
A pause.
“I found out Daniel wasn’t just stealing money.””
The recording crackled.
“He was changing documents. Property documents. Medical records. Anything that helped him control people.””
I looked at the papers.
Detective Carter began reading them.
Claire continued.
“I thought Vanessa was helping him.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She looked like she had been punched.
“But I was wrong.””
The room went silent.
Claire’s next words were softer.
“She was trying to protect Noah.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
A tear rolled down her face.
The recording continued.
“Daniel found out I knew. He threatened me. He told me if I exposed him, he would destroy everything.””
I gripped the recorder.
“Marcus, listen carefully.””
The sound of Claire breathing filled the basement.
“If anything happens to me, do not trust the documents Daniel shows you.””
A pause.
“The original deed is not just proof of ownership.””
I looked at Detective Carter.
Claire’s voice became urgent.
“It contains evidence.””
The recording stopped.
Then restarted automatically.
A second file.
This one was shorter.
Claire sounded afraid.
“Marcus, if Noah is ever in danger, remember this.””
My heart stopped.
“The person who took him will not run.””
A pause.
“They will come back.””
Static.
Then:
“Because they need what Noah has.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does Noah have?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I swear.””
“Then why did Daniel take him?””
She wiped her tears.
“Because Claire trusted Noah with something.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“I don’t know.””
A detective’s voice came from behind us.
“Mr. Reed.””
We turned.
An officer stood at the basement entrance.
“We found something outside.””
“What?””
He held up a small object.
A toy truck wheel.
My stomach dropped.
Noah’s toy.
The officer continued.
“It was near the back fence.””
I took it.
Then I noticed something.
A tiny piece of paper was wrapped around it.
I unfolded it.
Only four words were written.
*He knows the hiding place.*
My hands tightened.
“He.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
Because we all thought the same thing.
Daniel.
But then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered immediately.
“Where is my son?””
No greeting.
No introduction.
Only silence.
Then a child’s voice.
“Dad?””
My heart nearly stopped.
“Noah?””
“Dad, listen to me.””
His voice was shaking.
“I found something.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?””
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
Then whispering.
“Dad… Daniel isn’t the one who took me.””
I froze.
“What?””
The line crackled.
“Noah, who is with you?””
Silence.
Then my son whispered:
“Dad…”
His voice broke.
“The person who brought me here…”
A loud sound interrupted him.
A door closing.
Noah gasped.
Then his voice became almost impossible to hear.
May you like
“It’s Vanessa.””
The call ended.
