Chapter 7: The Room Claire Never Left

“The room where Claire died.””

The words followed me upstairs.

Every step toward the bedroom felt heavier than the one before.

Three years.

Three years since I had stood outside that door and watched doctors carry my wife away.

Three years since I had sat on that same floor, holding Noah while he cried.

Three years since I had promised myself I would never let anything hurt my family again.

And somehow…

The danger had been inside the house the entire time.

Detective Carter followed behind me.

“Mr. Reed,” he said quietly, “are you sure about this?””

I stopped at the top of the stairs.

“No.””

The honesty surprised him.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””

That was the truth.

My entire life had been built on things I believed were facts.

Claire died from her illness.

Vanessa was helping us.

The house was safe.

My son was protected.

Every single one of those beliefs had cracked.

I opened the bedroom door.

The room looked exactly the same.

That was the worst part.

The bed was still there.

The nightstand was still there.

Claire’s favorite lamp still sat in the corner.

Even the small vase of dried flowers remained on the windowsill.

I had never changed anything.

People told me it was unhealthy.

That I needed to move forward.

But I couldn’t.

This room was the last place where my wife was still alive.

At least, that was what I thought.

I walked slowly inside.

Vanessa stood at the doorway.

She didn’t enter.

“Why aren’t you coming in?”” I asked.

Her face tightened.

“Because Claire asked me not to.””

I turned.

“What?””

“She made me promise.””

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because she knew Daniel had been here.””

My blood ran cold.

“He came into this room?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night before she died.””

I stared.

“You were here?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I wanted to.””

“But?””

Vanessa looked at the bed.

“But Claire stopped me.””

I looked at her.

“She stopped you?””

“She said if Daniel thought I knew too much, he would come after Noah.””

That name again.

Noah.

Everything came back to my son.

Everything.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Claire called me.””

“Why?””

“She was scared.””

“What did she say?””

Vanessa stepped into the room slowly.

“She said Daniel knew she found the evidence.””

I looked around.

“Where did she hide it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You were her friend.””

“Yes.””

“You helped her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why don’t you know?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because Claire didn’t trust anyone completely.””

The words hurt.

Even though I understood why.

“She didn’t trust me?””

Vanessa’s expression softened.

“No.””

She paused.

“She trusted you more than anyone.””

“Then why hide things from me?””

“Because she knew you would fight.””

I looked away.

That sounded like Claire.

She always knew me too well.

Vanessa continued.

“She knew if you found out, you would confront Daniel immediately.””

“And?””

“And Daniel was waiting for that.””

Detective Carter looked around the room.

“Let’s focus. What are we looking for?””

I walked toward the bed.

“I don’t know.””

But then I stopped.

Something felt wrong.

I looked at the furniture.

The pictures.

The walls.

Then I noticed it.

A framed photograph on the nightstand.

A picture of Claire and Noah.

It was slightly tilted.

I picked it up.

Behind it was a small scratch on the wall.

A mark.

Almost invisible.

I touched it.

A piece of paint moved.

“Here.””

Detective Carter stepped closer.

“Mr. Reed?””

I pressed against the spot.

A small compartment opened.

Empty.

My heart dropped.

“No.””

Inside was only dust.

Someone had already been here.

Vanessa whispered:

“He found it.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Daniel.

He had been searching.

He had been one step ahead.

I looked around the room again.

“If Daniel already found this, why leave the house?””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“He didn’t.””

“What?””

“He wants you to think he found everything.””

Detective Carter frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel doesn’t just want evidence.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He wants Marcus to give up.””

I stared at the empty compartment.

Then something caught my eye.

A small scratch inside the hidden space.

Not random.

A symbol.

A tiny drawing.

A house.

And beneath it, three letters.

N.R.

I touched it.

“Noah Reed.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Claire left that?””

I nodded.

“My wife made this for him.””

Detective Carter examined it.

“Could there be another compartment?””

I looked at the wall.

The room.

The furniture.

Then I remembered something.

Something small.

Something I had ignored for years.

Claire always kept one thing near this bed.

Her old wooden jewelry box.

But after she died…

It disappeared.

I turned around.

“Where is the jewelry box?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“Claire’s jewelry box.””

“I don’t know.””

“I kept it here.””

“When?””

“The night she died.””

Vanessa went pale.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

“That box wasn’t jewelry.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Claire told me it was the safest place to hide something.””

My heart started pounding.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was gone.””

“Where?””

She looked toward the closet.

“The closet.””

I walked over.

Opened the doors.

Clothes.

Shoes.

Old boxes.

Nothing.

I started moving everything.

Detective Carter helped.

Minutes passed.

Then I felt something behind the back panel.

A hollow sound.

I knocked again.

Wood.

But different.

A hidden space.

We removed the panel carefully.

Behind it was a small compartment.

Inside was a wooden box.

My wife’s jewelry box.

I picked it up.

It was heavier than it should have been.

I opened it.

Inside were no necklaces.

No rings.

No jewelry.

Only a small memory card.

And a note.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Marcus,

If you found this, then Daniel failed.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like she already knew what was coming.

I continued.

The person who hurt me is not the person you think.

My breath caught.

The room went silent.

The note continued.

Daniel is dangerous. But he is not alone.

I read the next line slowly.

Someone in our family helped him.

My stomach dropped.

Family.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at me.

“No,” she whispered.

The note had one final sentence.

The handwriting became messier.

Like Claire had written it while she was afraid.

Marcus, the person you trust most is the one who knows where Noah is.

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A floorboard creaked.

Detective Carter immediately reached for his weapon.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A familiar voice.

A voice I never expected to hear.

“Marcus.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it every day.

At breakfast.

At dinner.

In this house.

The person stepped into the doorway.

And my entire body went cold.

Because standing there…

Was the person Claire warned me about.

The person I trusted most.

May you like

The person who knew where Noah was.

Vanessa.
