Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
“It’s Vanessa.””
The call ended.
I stood there with the phone pressed against my ear, waiting for something.
A second voice.
A signal.
Anything.
Nothing came.
The basement was silent.
Too silent.
Everyone was looking at me.
Detective Carter stepped closer.
“Mr. Reed?””
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
Because my brain was fighting itself.
Vanessa.
The woman who had lied to me.
The woman who knew about the wall.
The woman who had hidden information.
The woman who had spent years around my son.
But also…
The woman who had looked terrified when Noah disappeared.
The woman who had cried when she heard Claire’s recording.
The woman Claire’s own message said was trying to protect Noah.
None of it made sense.
“Marcus,” Carter said again.
“What did your son say?””
I slowly lowered the phone.
“He said Vanessa took him.””
Every eye turned toward her.
Vanessa looked like the words had physically hit her.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, he didn’t.””
“He did.””
She shook her head.
“Noah wouldn’t say that.””
I stepped toward her.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because it isn’t true.””
“Then explain.””
“I can’t.””
That answer made my anger explode.
“You can’t?””
My voice echoed through the basement.
“My son is missing, my wife left behind secret messages because she was afraid of someone, and now Noah tells me you’re the person who took him, and your answer is you can’t explain?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn’t take him.””
“Then where is he?””
She looked away.
And that was the moment I noticed something.
She wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at the old metal box.
At the documents.
At the evidence Claire had hidden.
Like she was afraid of something inside it.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t respond.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Three years ago, Claire asked me to do something.””
I waited.
“She knew Daniel was dangerous.””
Detective Carter folded his arms.
“Why didn’t she go to the police?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Daniel had already planned for that.””
“What does that mean?””
“He had connections. People who believed him. People who would make Claire look unstable.””
I looked at the documents.
“Medical records?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was creating a story.””
“A story?””
“That Claire was sick, confused, and making accusations because of her condition.””
My stomach tightened.
“He wanted people to think she was paranoid.””
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“And you helped him?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“At first.””
The room went completely quiet.
I stared.
“At first?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“I thought Daniel was helping her.””
“You knew him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked at the floor.
“I met him through Claire.””
That surprised me.
“My wife introduced you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Months before she got sick.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if you understand what Daniel was doing.””
She looked up.
“He made himself useful.””
The words were quiet.
“He became the person everyone trusted.””
Detective Carter stepped closer.
“Explain everything.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Daniel helped Claire organize her finances. He helped with paperwork. He made himself part of your family.””
My jaw tightened.
“And then?””
“Then Claire noticed money disappearing.””
“How much?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Enough to make someone desperate.””
“Why didn’t Claire tell me?””
“Because she thought she could fix it.””
I looked away.
That sounded exactly like Claire.
Always protecting everyone.
Always believing she could carry the weight alone.
Vanessa continued.
“She asked me to watch Daniel.””
“And you did?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes moved toward the staircase.
“Because she was my friend.””
That answer was simple.
Almost painful.
“Then why did you act like the house was yours?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because Daniel forced me.””
“How?””
“He knew Claire trusted me.””
I waited.
“He recorded conversations. He edited them. He threatened to send them to you.””
My expression hardened.
“The recording.””
She nodded.
“The one you heard.””
“You really didn’t say you wanted my house?””
“I said words.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“I said them.””
A chill went through me.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel was listening.””
Detective Carter frowned.
“Explain.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He told me exactly what to say.””
I stared at her.
“And you did.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her answer came immediately.
“Because he threatened Noah.””
The room became quiet.
Again.
Everyone looked upstairs.
At the room where my son had slept.
Where he had played.
Where he had hidden a secret for years.
“What did he threaten to do?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“He said accidents happen.””
My fists clenched.
“You should have told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After Claire died.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because Daniel showed me a picture.””
“What picture?””
“One of Noah.””
My blood ran cold.
“Doing what?””
“Sleeping.””
I felt sick.
“He was watching my son?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me he had people everywhere.””
Detective Carter immediately reached for his radio.
“We need to investigate Daniel Whitmore’s history. Find his address, associates, everything.””
An officer moved away.
I looked back at Vanessa.
“But that still doesn’t explain the call.””
Her face changed.
“What call?””
“Noah said you took him.””
She went completely still.
Then whispered:
“Marcus…”
“What?””
“I think Noah was trying to warn you.””
I frowned.
“He said your name.””
“Yes.””
“He said it was you.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Did he say ‘Vanessa took me’?””
I thought back.
The exact words.
The fear.
The interruption.
I replayed it.
“Dad…”
“I found something.””
“Daniel isn’t the one who took me.””
“It’s Vanessa.””
I looked at her.
The sentence could mean something else.
Not Vanessa took him.
Vanessa was the reason he knew.
Or…
Someone wanted me to think it meant that.
Before I could answer, Detective Carter’s phone rang.
He stepped away.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
“Mr. Reed.””
I turned.
“What?””
“We found Daniel’s vehicle.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
“Three miles from here.””
“Is Noah there?””
Carter hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“No.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why are you calling it good news?””
“Because we found something inside.””
“What?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“A child’s backpack.””
I ran toward him.
“Where?””
He stopped me.
“Mr. Reed, wait.””
“No.””
“Wait.””
He handed me a small evidence bag.
Inside was Noah’s backpack.
The one with the basketball keychain he loved.
I grabbed it.
“Where is he?””
Carter’s face was serious.
“We don’t know.””
I opened the backpack.
Inside were Noah’s notebooks.
His favorite book.
A water bottle.
And something else.
A folded piece of paper.
I opened it.
My hands shook.
It was Noah’s handwriting.
Three words.
*Dad, trust Vanessa.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was staring at the note.
Her face broke.
Because she knew something I didn’t.
“What?”” I asked.
She whispered:
“Noah found it.””
“Found what?””
She pointed at the paper.
“At the bottom.””
I looked closer.
There was writing beneath Noah’s message.
Almost invisible.
Like someone had tried to erase it.
I held it under the light.
A second sentence appeared.
Not written by Noah.
Written by Claire.
My wife’s handwriting.
*Marcus, if Noah ever tells you to trust Vanessa… it means Daniel has already found the proof.*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“Where is the proof?””
She whispered:
“The only place Claire would hide something important.””
“Where?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the floor.
Toward the basement.
Toward our house.
And then she said:
“Somewhere Daniel would never look.””
I waited.
She took a breath.
“The one place he thought was already destroyed.””
I stared at her.
“What place?””
May you like
Vanessa looked at me.
“The room where Claire died.””
