Chapter 6: The Voice on the Chip

Claire stared at Daniel.

“She recorded Grace's voice?””

“No,” Daniel said.

“Not her.””

The three men from the black SUV were walking through the cemetery gates.

Daniel grabbed Claire's wrist.

“We have about thirty seconds.””

“Thirty seconds for what?””

“To get out.””

Claire looked at the men.

One wore a charcoal suit.

Another carried an umbrella.

The third had one hand inside his coat.

Daniel pulled her toward a narrow path between the graves.

“Stay low.””

Claire followed.

“Daniel, you need to tell me what's happening.””

“I will.””

“When?””

“When we're alive.””

They moved quickly through the cemetery.

Claire clutched the bracelet.

Behind them came the sound of footsteps on wet gravel.

A man's voice carried through the fog.

“Claire!””

She stopped.

Daniel turned.

“Don't answer.””

“It's my name.””

“I know.””

The voice came again.

“Claire Wilson, we know you're here.””

Claire's heart pounded.

Daniel pushed open a rusted iron gate.

“Go.””

They slipped through.

A narrow road ran behind the cemetery.

Daniel pointed toward Claire's car.

“Get in.””

“What about you?””

“I have another car.””

“You're leaving?””

“I'll be right behind you.””

“You expect me to trust you?””

Daniel stopped.

His face was inches from hers.

“No.””

Claire stared at him.

“I expect you to trust what you can verify.””

Then he pulled a folded piece of paper from his coat and shoved it into her hand.

“Take this.””

“What is it?””

“The location of a safe house.””

“Why would I need a safe house?””

“Because once they realize you have that chip, your house won't be safe.””

He glanced over his shoulder.

“They're getting closer.””

Claire looked toward the cemetery.

A man stood at the gate.

Watching.

Daniel stepped back.

“Drive.””

Claire hated leaving him.

But she ran to the car.

Before closing the door, she looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“Don't disappear again.””

His expression broke for half a second.

“I won't.””

Claire started the engine.

The tires sprayed water as she pulled onto the road.

She checked the rearview mirror.

Daniel was already running toward an old dark pickup parked beneath the trees.

The SUV exited the cemetery behind him.

Then Claire saw the pickup accelerate in the opposite direction.

The SUV followed.

Not her.

Daniel.

Claire pressed the gas.

She didn't stop until she was several miles away.

When she finally pulled into an empty grocery-store parking lot, her hands were shaking.

She took out the bracelet.

The hidden compartment was still open.

The chip was tiny.

Almost weightless.

Yet somehow it had destroyed the version of her life she'd believed for eighteen years.

She pulled out the paper Daniel had given her.

An address.

No name.

Just a street.

Claire stared at it.

Then her phone rang.

Ethan.

She answered.

“Mom?””

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

“I’m driving.””

“You didn't come home.””

“I had somewhere to go.””

His voice changed.

“Is it about Grace?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Did you find out who her father is?””

Claire gripped the steering wheel.

“I found him.””

Silence.

Then Ethan whispered,

“Dad?””

“Yes.””

“Is he alive?””

“Yes.””

Ethan exhaled shakily.

“Does he want to see me?””

Claire hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“Can I talk to him?””

“Ethan, things are dangerous right now.””

“Are we in danger?””

Claire looked at the dark road behind her.

“Yes.””

The word came out quietly.

Ethan was silent.

Then he said, “Come home.””

“I can't.””

“Mom.””

“I need to protect you.””

“You always say that when you're hiding something.””

Claire shut her eyes.

“I'll explain everything.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“Promise?””

Claire swallowed.

“Yes.””

The call ended.

She drove to the safe house.

It was an old cottage at the edge of town, hidden behind a row of tall pine trees.

No neighbors.

No cameras that Claire could see.

She entered with the key Daniel had given her.

Inside, the place was surprisingly clean.

A kitchen.

A sofa.

A small bedroom.

And an old laptop sitting on the dining table.

Beside it was a note.

*Insert the chip. Do not connect this computer to the internet.*

Claire stared at it.

She locked the doors.

Closed the curtains.

Then sat down.

For several seconds, she simply looked at the tiny chip in her palm.

She remembered Grace at the bus stop.

Her quiet voice.

Her hand touching the bracelet.

*My foster mother said my real mom left me because I couldn't see.*

Claire closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she inserted the chip.

The laptop screen flickered.

A single audio file appeared.

*10-14-2008_0214AM.wav*

Claire clicked it.

Static.

A hospital alarm.

Footsteps.

Then a woman's voice.

Breathing hard.

“Recording started.””

Claire froze.

The voice sounded familiar.

Margaret.

“I'm in neonatal unit B.””

A baby cried faintly in the background.

Claire's hand flew to her mouth.

Grace.

Margaret continued.

“They said no one was supposed to know about this child.””

A door slammed.

Margaret whispered,

“Dr. Voss brought two men with him.””

Claire leaned closer.

“Why?””

Her own voice startled her.

Then she remembered the recording couldn't hear her.

A man's voice appeared in the background.

“Is the device ready?””

Another man answered.

“Yes.””

Claire frowned.

“What device?””

Margaret spoke softly.

“They keep calling her Subject Seven.””

Claire's stomach turned.

“Grace isn't a subject.””

The recording continued.

Margaret said, “She's six days old.””

A man replied, “She's useful.””

“She's a baby.””

“That's why she's useful.””

Claire's breathing stopped.

The recording crackled.

A baby cried.

Then another sound.

A strange electronic tone.

High.

Thin.

Almost like a whistle.

Margaret said, “What is that?””

The man answered,

“Her response.””

Claire stared at the laptop.

“Response to what?””

The tone came again.

The baby stopped crying.

Then Margaret gasped.

“She turned toward it.””

The man sounded excited.

“Again.””

The tone repeated.

The baby's breathing changed.

Then, unbelievably, a tiny sound came through the speaker.

Not a cry.

Not a laugh.

A syllable.

A sound that almost resembled a word.

Margaret whispered,

“Oh my God.””

The man said, “Play the frequency again.””

The tone repeated.

The baby made the same sound.

This time clearer.

“M…”

The recording stopped for two seconds.

Then Grace's tiny voice made another sound.

“Ma…”

Claire's eyes filled instantly.

She pressed both hands over her mouth.

“My baby.””

The audio continued.

Margaret was crying now.

“You said she couldn't see.””

“She can't.””

“Then why is she reacting?””

“We don't need her to see.””

“What are you doing to her?””

The man's tone changed.

“Preparing her.””

“For what?””

Silence.

Then another man's voice.

“Bring Daniel in.””

Claire's blood went cold.

Daniel's voice came through the recording.

“What the hell are you doing here?””

Someone struck him.

Margaret screamed.

“Stop!””

Claire gripped the edge of the table.

Daniel's recorded voice sounded furious.

“You promised me they wouldn't touch her.””

The first man answered.

“And you promised to cooperate.””

“I said I'd keep Claire away.””

“You failed.””

A pause.

Then Daniel said,

“She has no idea.””

The man replied,

“She will.””

Claire leaned closer.

The recording crackled violently.

Then came Daniel's voice again.

“Take me instead.””

Claire's eyes widened.

“What?””

“Let her go. Let my wife and daughter go.””

The man laughed.

“You still don't understand.””

“What?””

“You're not protecting Grace from us.””

A long pause.

“We're protecting Grace from what happens if the government learns what she can hear.””

Claire went completely still.

“What she can hear?””

The recording resumed.

Daniel asked,

“What does that mean?””

The man said,

“She responds to frequencies humans normally don't perceive.””

Claire frowned.

It sounded impossible.

But the man's voice remained calm.

“We discovered it in the womb.””

“What?””

“She reacts to signals.””

“Signals from what?””

The man didn't answer.

Instead, the strange tone played again.

Grace made the same tiny sound.

“Ma…”

Then another sound came.

This time, it wasn't Grace.

It was an adult voice hidden beneath the frequency.

Claire turned up the volume.

A man's whisper emerged.

“She's listening.””

Claire's blood ran cold.

The recording ended with a violent crash.

Then silence.

Claire sat motionless.

A second file appeared on the screen.

She clicked it.

The audio was only fourteen seconds long.

Daniel's voice.

Recorded years later.

“Claire, if you're hearing this, they found Grace again.””

Static.

“If she's alive, don't let them convince you she's dangerous.””

Claire's eyes filled.

“She isn't.””

Daniel continued.

“There is one thing you need to understand.””

A pause.

“Grace didn't inherit the condition.””

Claire leaned toward the screen.

“She was made to have it.””

The file ended.

Claire stared at the laptop.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

*Did you hear the recording?*

Another arrived immediately.

*Now ask Grace what she remembers from October 14.*

Claire's fingers went numb.

She typed:

*Who are you?*

The answer came almost instantly.

*Someone who was in the room.*

Claire's heart pounded.

She typed:

*Tell me your name.*

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then returned.

Finally:

*You already know it.*

Claire stared at the message.

Another text appeared.

*Look at the back of the bracelet.*

Claire turned the silver bracelet over.

Her hands trembled.

She had examined the flower charm before.

The tiny scratch.

The initials.

But now, beneath the clasp, she noticed something she'd never seen.

A second engraving.

Three letters.

*E.V.*

Claire's breath caught.

She knew those initials.

Dr. Elias Voss.

The man named in the hospital report.

The man who had examined her baby.

The man whose signature appeared on the transfer papers.

Then a final message appeared.

*He's still alive too.*

And beneath it was a photograph of Grace.

Taken that morning.

She was standing outside her foster home's front door.

Beside her stood a man Claire had never seen before.

His hand rested gently on Grace's shoulder.

Across the bottom of the photograph were four words:

*She's about to remember.*
