Chapter 7: What Grace Remembered
Claire stared at the photograph until the edges of the screen blurred.
Grace stood outside Margaret’s house.
And beside her was a man.
Tall.
Gray-haired.
One hand resting lightly on Grace’s shoulder.
Claire had never seen him before.
Yet something about his face felt familiar.
Not because she remembered him.
Because she had seen his name.
*Elias Voss.*
Dr. Voss.
The doctor who had signed Grace’s transfer papers eighteen years ago.
The doctor whose initials were engraved inside the bracelet.
Claire's phone almost slipped from her hand.
“No.””
She opened the photograph again.
Zoomed in.
Grace's face was calm.
Unaware.
The man beside her looked directly at the camera.
Like he knew Claire would see it.
A knock sounded against the safe-house door.
Claire froze.
Three knocks.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Her first instinct was to reach for the kitchen knife.
Her second was to call the police.
Then a voice came through the door.
“Claire?””
Daniel.
She exhaled.
She unlocked the door.
Daniel stepped inside, soaked from the rain.
His face was bruised.
There was a cut along his cheek.
“What happened?””
“They found me.””
“Who?””
“The men from the cemetery.””
Claire locked the door behind him.
“Where have you been?””
“Trying to get back here.””
She held up the phone.
“I got another photograph.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
“Where did you get that?””
“Someone sent it.””
He stared at the man standing beside Grace.
“That's Voss.””
“I know.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“He's supposed to be dead.””
“You said that about yourself.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I know.””
Claire stepped closer.
“He's with Grace.””
“I can see that.””
“Then we go get her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not yet.””
Claire stared at him.
“Not yet?””
“That's exactly what they want.””
“My daughter is standing beside a man who took her from me.””
“That's why you can't rush in.””
Claire's voice rose.
“You've had eighteen years to be careful. I've had eighteen years to think she was dead.””
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
Daniel went quiet.
Claire held up the bracelet.
“They made her blind.””
Daniel looked away.
“You heard the recording.””
“She was six days old.””
“I know.””
“They called her Subject Seven.””
“I know.””
“And you still want me to wait?””
“I want you to keep her alive.””
Claire's anger faltered.
“What aren't you telling me?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel.””
He finally met her eyes.
“There were seven children.””
Claire frowned.
“What?””
“Seven infants.””
His voice was low.
“Grace was one of them.””
“What happened to the others?””
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“Four died.””
Claire's face went pale.
“Four?””
“Two disappeared.””
“And Grace?””
“She survived.””
Claire looked at the laptop.
“That’s why they want her.””
“No.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“That's not the whole reason.””
“Then tell me.””
Daniel walked to the table.
He looked at the audio file.
“Grace wasn't just responding to frequencies.””
Claire waited.
“She remembered them.””
“She was a baby.””
“She remembered the pattern.””
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
Daniel pulled out a folded newspaper clipping.
He placed it beside the laptop.
It was old.
Yellowed.
The headline read:
*LOCAL RESEARCH LAB SHUTS DOWN AFTER MYSTERIOUS FIRE*
Claire scanned the article.
No mention of children.
No mention of Voss.
Just a company name.
*Helix Biomedical Research.*
Then she saw a photograph beneath the headline.
Dr. Voss stood beside a group of scientists.
Claire recognized him.
Younger.
Smiling.
She looked at Daniel.
“You worked for them?””
“No.””
“Then how did you get inside?””
“I followed them.””
“Why?””
“Because I found out what they were doing.””
Claire's eyes dropped to the article.
“What's Helix?””
“Officially? A private neurological research company.””
“And unofficially?””
Daniel hesitated.
“They were looking for people who could detect signals hidden below normal hearing.””
Claire remembered the recording.
Grace's tiny voice.
The high-pitched tone.
The adult whisper beneath it.
“She could hear something.””
“Yes.””
“What?””
“We never figured it out.””
Claire stared at him.
“We?””
Daniel looked down.
“There was another person helping me.””
“Who?””
Before Daniel could answer, Claire's phone rang.
Unknown number.
They both looked at it.
“Don't answer,” Daniel said.
Claire answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a woman's voice.
“Claire?””
Claire knew that voice.
“Margaret?””
Daniel's expression changed.
Margaret whispered,
“Don't trust Daniel.””
Claire went still.
“What?””
“He doesn't know everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Hang up.””
Margaret continued.
“Grace isn't with Voss because he took her.””
Claire's eyes widened.
“Then why?””
“Because she went with him.””
“No.””
“Claire, listen to me.””
Margaret's breathing sounded ragged.
“She remembered him.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Grace recognizes Voss.””
Daniel stepped toward the phone.
“Put it on speaker.””
Claire did.
Margaret's voice filled the room.
“Grace was never supposed to remember the fire.””
Daniel asked, “Where are you?””
“I'm hiding.””
“From who?””
“Everyone.””
“Margaret,” Claire said, “what happened that night?””
There was a long pause.
Then Margaret whispered,
“You were there.””
Claire's heart stopped.
“What?””
“You don't remember.””
“I wasn't there.””
“You came back.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
She shook her head.
“I never went back to the hospital.””
Margaret's voice cracked.
“You did.””
“No.””
“You stood outside the nursery.””
Claire's breathing became shallow.
“I signed the papers that morning.””
“That was before the fire.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Margaret began crying.
“You came back because you heard your baby crying.””
Claire's mind flashed.
Rain.
A dark corridor.
A red emergency light.
A baby's cry.
Her own hand pushing open a door.
She grabbed the edge of the table.
Daniel caught her arm.
“Claire?””
She stared at him.
“I remember…”
Margaret continued.
“You saw Voss.””
Claire's eyes widened.
“He was carrying Grace.””
“I remember him.””
“You screamed at him.””
Claire's voice trembled.
“What happened?””
Margaret whispered,
“He told you Grace would die if you took her.””
Claire's hand flew to her mouth.
A memory.
Fragmented.
A doctor's face.
Gray eyes.
A cold hallway.
Someone saying:
*You don't understand what she is.*
Claire staggered backward.
“I thought that was a dream.””
“It wasn't.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You never told me.””
“I didn't remember.””
Margaret cried softly.
“You hit your head when the fire started.””
Claire touched the back of her skull.
Another flash.
Smoke.
Falling glass.
A hand pulling her away.
Daniel.
She looked at him.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You pulled me out.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because when you woke up, you didn't remember Grace.””
Claire stared at him.
“You let me think I abandoned her.””
“I thought the truth would put you in danger.””
Margaret whispered,
“And it did.””
A sudden sound came from the phone.
A door opening.
Margaret gasped.
“They found me.””
“Margaret!”” Claire shouted.
“Listen to me.””
Her voice became urgent.
“There is a room beneath the old Helix building.””
Daniel stiffened.
“Where?””
“Basement level three.””
“What's there?””
“The records.””
“What records?””
“The children.””
A man's voice sounded faintly in the background.
“Mrs. Hale?””
Margaret screamed.
The call went dead.
Claire stared at the phone.
Daniel was already moving.
“We're going.””
“To Helix?””
“Yes.””
“What about Grace?””
“We find the records first.””
“No.””
Claire grabbed his arm.
“You just said we needed to keep her alive.””
“We do.””
“Then why aren't we going to her?””
“Because Voss wants us to.””
Claire pulled her arm free.
“I don't care.””
Daniel looked at her.
“That's exactly what makes you dangerous to them.””
Claire's face hardened.
“I'm her mother.””
“And that's exactly what they know.””
She grabbed her coat.
“Then they can come for me.””
Daniel blocked the door.
“Claire.””
“Move.””
“No.””
“You don't get to decide that anymore.””
He stared at her.
“Do you know why I stayed away?””
“Because you were afraid.””
“Because every time I got close to you, people around you disappeared.””
Claire froze.
“What people?””
Daniel looked at the bracelet.
“The other parents.””
Silence.
“What parents?””
“The parents of the other six children.””
Claire felt cold.
“You knew them?””
“Yes.””
“What happened to them?””
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“They were all told their babies had died.””
Claire whispered,
“But they hadn't.””
“No.””
He looked at the laptop.
“Someone took them.””
A car engine sounded outside.
Both turned toward the window.
Headlights swept across the curtains.
One vehicle.
Then another.
Daniel killed the lights.
Claire moved beside him.
“They followed us.””
Daniel nodded.
“Probably.””
“How?””
His eyes dropped to the bracelet.
Claire's face changed.
“The chip?””
“No.””
Daniel reached for the bracelet.
“Something else.””
He turned it over.
Pressed the flower charm.
Nothing.
Then he twisted it.
A tiny red light blinked beneath the metal.
Claire stared.
“A tracker.””
Daniel nodded.
“They've known where Grace was for eighteen years.””
“And where I am now.””
“Yes.””
The headlights outside stopped.
Doors opened.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“We leave through the back.””
Claire grabbed the bracelet.
“Not without Grace.””
Daniel shook his head.
Then the back door rattled.
Someone was already there.
A man's voice came through the wood.
“Claire.””
She froze.
The voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
“You have something that belongs to us.””
Daniel moved in front of her.
The voice continued.
“Bring the bracelet.””
Claire recognized it.
She had heard it on the recording.
Dr. Voss.
Then he said something that made every hair on Claire's arms rise.
“Grace wants to speak to you.””
Claire's heart stopped.
And from outside the door came a soft voice.
“Mom?””
Claire's eyes filled instantly.
Grace.
Alive.
May you like
Standing on the other side of the door.
Then the lock began to turn.
