Chapter 8: The Girl Who Remembered
The lock clicked.
Claire stopped breathing.
“Mom?””
Grace's voice came from the other side of the door.
Small.
Shaking.
Real.
Claire took one step forward.
Daniel caught her wrist.
“Wait.””
“That's my daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then let go.””
Daniel stared at the door.
“Something's wrong.””
The knob turned again.
“Mom?””
Claire's eyes filled.
“Grace, are you hurt?””
A pause.
“No.””
“Are you alone?””
Silence.
Daniel leaned toward the door.
“Grace, what did you have for breakfast this morning?””
Claire looked at him.
“What are you doing?””
“Ask her.””
The room went silent.
Then Grace answered.
“Toast.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Try again.””
Grace said nothing.
Claire suddenly understood.
He was testing her.
She raised her voice.
“Grace, what did you have for breakfast?””
A long pause.
“Toast.””
Daniel whispered,
“She's being coached.””
Claire's stomach dropped.
“Grace wouldn't lie to me.””
“That's not what I'm saying.””
He pointed toward the door.
“Ask her something only Grace would know.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Grace?””
“Yes?””
“What did Ethan say to you at the bus stop?””
Silence.
Then the voice outside became sharper.
“He said…”
She stopped.
Claire's heart sank.
“You don't remember?””
“No.””
A man's voice cut through the hallway.
“Open the door.””
Voss.
Claire backed away.
Daniel whispered,
“Now.””
They moved toward the kitchen window.
Daniel lifted the latch.
“We're going out this way.””
“What about Grace?””
“We get her once we're outside.””
Claire hesitated.
The voice came again.
“Claire, if you leave, Grace will be hurt.””
Claire looked at the door.
Then at Daniel.
“That's the threat.””
“Yes.””
“You want the bracelet.””
“Yes.””
“Then I'll give it to him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Claire stared at him.
“We need time.””
She removed the bracelet.
Daniel grabbed her hand.
“Claire, don't.””
“I've spent eighteen years without her.””
She looked toward the door.
“I'm not leaving her again.””
Before Daniel could stop her, Claire walked into the hallway.
The door opened.
Voss stood there.
He was older than Claire remembered.
Silver hair.
Perfectly pressed gray suit.
The same calm eyes from her fractured memories.
Behind him stood two men.
And Grace.
Claire's heart broke at the sight of her.
Grace held her cane.
Her face was pale.
There was a small cut near her temple.
“Grace.””
Grace turned toward the sound.
“Mom?””
Claire almost collapsed.
Not because Grace called her Mom.
Because she sounded frightened.
Voss smiled.
“Family reunions are very emotional.””
Claire glared at him.
“What did you do to her?””
“Nothing.””
Grace stepped forward.
“Claire?””
Claire looked at Voss.
“She doesn't know you.””
Voss smiled faintly.
“She knows more than you think.””
Grace's fingers tightened around her cane.
Claire moved toward her.
“Grace, come to me.””
One of the men raised his arm.
Voss stopped him with a glance.
“Let her.””
Grace took one step.
Then another.
Claire held out her hand.
“It's okay.””
Grace reached for her.
Their fingers touched.
Claire pulled her close.
For one moment, the room disappeared.
Claire felt Grace's hair against her cheek.
Her shoulders trembled.
“You're safe.””
Grace whispered,
“Am I?””
Claire held her tighter.
“Yes.””
Voss laughed softly.
“You still believe that.””
Claire turned.
“Why did you bring her here?””
“Because she asked to see you.””
Grace frowned.
“I didn't.””
Voss looked at her.
“You did.””
“No.””
Grace's face tightened.
“I asked them to take me to my mother.””
Claire's heart pounded.
Voss tilted his head.
“Exactly.””
Daniel appeared behind Claire.
Voss smiled.
“Daniel.””
Daniel's voice was cold.
“You should have stayed dead.””
“And you should have stayed invisible.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You've been hunting her for eighteen years.””
Voss glanced at Grace.
“We've been protecting her.””
“From what?””
“From herself.””
Grace stiffened.
“What does that mean?””
Voss looked at her.
“You've been hearing things your entire life.””
Grace's face changed.
“What?””
“You hear sounds other people don't.””
Claire looked at Grace.
“Is that true?””
Grace hesitated.
“Sometimes.””
“What sounds?””
“High tones.””
“Anything else?””
Grace looked frightened.
“Voices.””
Claire's stomach tightened.
“What voices?””
Grace whispered,
“People calling my name.””
Voss smiled.
“Exactly.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Don't listen to him.””
Voss looked amused.
“You've spent years filling her head with fear.””
“I never spoke to her.””
“Not directly.””
Grace turned toward Daniel.
“You're my father.””
Daniel froze.
Grace's expression was unreadable.
“I heard your voice.””
“When?””
“On the recordings.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“She heard them.””
Voss said,
“She remembers.””
Claire felt a chill.
“What does she remember?””
Voss didn't answer.
Grace did.
“The fire.””
Everyone went still.
Grace raised her chin.
“I remember the fire.””
Claire moved closer.
“Tell me.””
Grace's fingers shook around the cane.
“There was a room.””
“Where?””
“A hospital.””
“What happened?””
“I couldn't see.””
Claire swallowed.
“Then what did you see?””
Grace shook her head.
“I didn't see it.””
She touched her ear.
“I heard it.””
Claire's eyes filled.
“What did you hear?””
Grace's voice became distant.
“Machines.””
A pause.
“Footsteps.””
Another pause.
“And you.””
Claire stopped.
“You heard me?””
Grace nodded.
“You were crying.””
Claire pressed a hand against her mouth.
“I was?””
“You kept saying my name.””
Grace whispered,
“Grace.””
Claire began to cry.
“I remember holding you.””
Grace's face tightened.
“I remember your hands.””
Voss watched them closely.
Then Daniel asked,
“What else?””
Grace turned toward him.
“I remember Dad.””
Daniel's eyes widened.
“You remember me?””
“Not your face.””
“Then how?””
“Your voice.””
Daniel's lips trembled.
Grace continued.
“You were fighting with someone.””
Voss's expression changed.
Claire noticed.
“So did Dr. Voss.””
Grace nodded.
“He said I didn't belong to you.””
Voss's smile disappeared.
Claire stepped forward.
“What else did he say?””
Grace looked directly at Voss, though her eyes remained unfocused.
“He said I was worth more alive.””
Voss went silent.
Daniel whispered,
“There it is.””
Claire looked at him.
“What?””
“The real reason.””
Voss shook his head.
“You don't understand what you're dealing with.””
“Then explain it.””
Voss looked at Grace.
“She was born with a rare neurological response.””
Claire snapped,
“She was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“You experimented on her.””
“We studied her.””
“You hurt her.””
“No.””
Grace's voice cut through the room.
“You did.””
Everyone turned.
Grace's face was calm now.
“You made the sound.””
Voss went pale.
“What?””
“The sound that made me sick.””
Claire looked at her.
“You remember that?””
Grace nodded.
“I heard it in my dreams.””
She touched her temple.
“It came every night.””
Daniel stared at Voss.
“You conditioned her.””
Voss remained silent.
Claire stepped forward.
“You made her blind.””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Grace answered before he could.
“Me.””
Claire turned toward her.
“What?””
Grace swallowed.
“I closed my eyes.””
“You can't close your eyes and lose your sight.””
“I know.””
“Then what do you mean?””
Grace's voice shook.
“They told me that if I opened my eyes, people would die.””
Claire felt the blood drain from her face.
“Who told you?””
“Voss.””
Voss said sharply,
“She was confused.””
Grace continued.
“He said I had to learn not to see.””
Claire stared at Voss.
“You manipulated a child.””
“She was six days old.””
“And you remember?””
Grace nodded.
“Not everything.””
She reached toward the bracelet.
“But enough.””
Voss suddenly moved.
He grabbed Grace's wrist.
Claire screamed.
“Let her go!””
Daniel lunged.
One of the guards tackled him.
The room exploded into chaos.
Grace struck Voss's hand with her cane.
He released her.
Claire caught Grace around the shoulders.
“Run!””
They stumbled toward the back door.
A gunshot cracked through the room.
Claire froze.
Daniel shouted,
“Go!””
They ran.
Rain hit Claire's face as they burst outside.
Grace held her arm.
“I can run.””
“Then run.””
They crossed the yard.
Behind them came shouting.
A second gunshot.
Claire pulled Grace behind a stone wall.
Daniel appeared seconds later, limping.
“Move.””
“What happened?””
“Bullet grazed me.””
Grace reached toward him.
“Dad?””
Daniel stopped.
Grace touched his face.
“You're hurt.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I'll be okay.””
They reached the tree line.
A vehicle engine roared behind them.
Headlights swept across the yard.
Daniel pointed toward a narrow trail.
“There!””
They ran through the trees until they reached an abandoned road.
A dark van waited at the far end.
Claire stopped.
“That's not ours.””
Daniel looked at it.
The side door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Claire froze.
She recognized her.
Margaret.
Alive.
“Get in!”” Margaret shouted.
Claire ran.
“Margaret!””
They climbed inside.
Margaret slammed the door.
“Drive!””
Daniel jumped behind the wheel.
The van tore away.
Grace sat beside Claire, breathing hard.
For several minutes, no one spoke.
Then Margaret looked back.
Her face was streaked with tears.
“I am so sorry.””
Claire stared at her.
“You were working for Voss.””
“I was forced to.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You hid my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Margaret's voice broke.
“Because he threatened your life.””
Claire shook her head.
“That's not all.””
Margaret looked at Grace.
“No.””
“What aren't you telling me?””
Margaret's eyes dropped.
“I didn't just hide Grace.””
Claire waited.
“I helped them erase her records.””
Daniel's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
Margaret continued.
“But before I did, I copied one final file.””
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a small envelope.
“This is what they were really protecting.””
Claire took it.
Inside was a photograph.
Seven newborn babies.
Each had a number taped beside them.
Six names had been crossed out.
Only one remained.
*SUBJECT 7 — GRACE*
Underneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
Claire read it aloud.
“Subject Seven is not the source.””
Daniel looked in the rearview mirror.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret whispered,
“It means Grace wasn't the one they were looking for.””
Claire turned the page.
There was one final line.
*She is the receiver.*
Grace suddenly lifted her head.
Her expression changed.
“Mom.””
Claire turned.
“What?””
Grace pressed both hands against her ears.
“I hear it again.””
Everyone went silent.
“Hear what?””
Grace's face went pale.
“The sound.””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Where?””
Grace pointed toward the darkness ahead.
“At the road.””
Claire listened.
Nothing.
Then, beneath the sound of the engine, she heard it too.
A faint, high-pitched tone.
Grace whispered,
May you like
“They found us.””
And somewhere in the darkness behind them, another engine started.
