Chapter 10: The Child They Hid

Emily stared at the staircase.

A small girl stood halfway down.

She was Black, perhaps eight years old, with dark curls falling around her face. She wore a pale yellow nightgown and clutched a worn stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Her eyes were fixed on Emily.

Not Ryan.

Not Marcus.

Emily.

“Mom?””

Emily couldn't move.

Ethan stepped out from behind her.

The little girl looked at him.

Ethan looked back.

For several seconds, neither child spoke.

Then the girl whispered,

“Ethan?””

Ethan's face changed.

“How do you know my name?””

The girl slowly descended another step.

“Because you're my brother.””

Emily's hand flew to her mouth.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Marcus whispered,

“Madison…”

The girl looked at him.

“Uncle Marcus?””

Marcus's face crumpled.

He covered his mouth with one hand.

“You remember me?””

Madison nodded.

“Mom showed me pictures.””

Emily looked at Emma.

“Who is she?””

Emma stepped forward.

“My daughter.””

Emily's knees weakened.

“Your daughter?””

Emma nodded.

“Our daughter.””

Emily stared at Ryan.

He couldn't look at her.

Emily's voice shook.

“Tell me the truth.””

Ryan remained silent.

“Ryan.””

He finally looked at her.

His eyes were wet.

“I didn't know which child was yours.””

Emily stared.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“When you were pregnant, there were complications.””

Emma spoke quietly.

“The doctors discovered there were twins.””

Emily's breathing stopped.

“Twins.””

Emma nodded.

“You gave birth to both of them.””

Emily looked at Ethan.

Then Madison.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Different memories.

Emily shook her head.

“I would remember having twins.””

Ryan whispered,

“You didn't.””

Emily turned toward him.

“What did you do?””

Ryan swallowed.

“After the accident, you lost part of your memory.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“And he used it.””

Ryan looked at him.

“I thought the children would be safer if nobody knew.””

Emily's voice rose.

“You separated them.””

“I had to.””

“You lied about my daughter.””

“I didn't know which baby was which.””

Emma's eyes hardened.

“I did.””

Ryan looked at her.

“You disappeared.””

“You made me disappear.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Moretti, explain.””

Ryan looked exhausted.

“Someone was trying to find the children.””

“Why?””

Ryan looked at Ethan and Madison.

“Because their biological father had enemies.””

Emily turned toward Marcus.

Marcus shook his head.

“He means me.””

Emily stared at him.

“You?””

Marcus nodded.

“I was investigating a criminal organization before I disappeared.””

Ryan continued.

“They wanted access to Marcus's financial records. His contacts. Everything.””

Marcus's expression darkened.

“And you decided to use my children as bait.””

“No.””

Ryan shook his head.

“I decided to hide them.””

Emily looked at Madison.

“Where has she been?””

Ryan couldn't answer.

Emma did.

“Inside this house.””

Emily looked around.

“The whole time?””

Emma nodded.

“Ryan kept her hidden after he convinced everyone she had died.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“How could you?””

Ryan finally broke.

“I was afraid.””

Emily walked toward him.

“You were afraid?””

Her voice was quiet now.

“You were afraid, so you let my daughter grow up believing she couldn't leave this house?””

Ryan wiped his face.

“She had everything.””

Emily stared at him.

“Except a mother.””

That silenced him.

Emily turned toward Madison.

The girl stood frozen on the staircase.

Emily slowly knelt.

“Come here.””

Madison hesitated.

Then she descended the remaining steps.

She stopped a few feet away.

“Are you my mom?””

Emily could barely speak.

“Yes.””

Madison studied her face.

“You look like the pictures.””

Emily smiled through tears.

“I've been looking for you without knowing I was looking.””

Madison stepped forward.

Emily opened her arms.

The girl ran into them.

Emily held her tightly.

For the first time that night, the mansion didn't feel enormous.

It felt unbearably small.

Ethan approached.

“Are you really my sister?””

Madison pulled away from Emily.

She nodded.

Ethan smiled.

“I always wanted a sister.””

Madison smiled back.

“I always wanted a brother.””

The children hugged.

Emily looked over their heads at Emma.

“Why did you come tonight?””

Emma wiped her tears.

“Because Ryan was about to send Ethan away.””

Ryan lowered his head.

“I couldn't let that happen.””

“You didn't stop it,” Emma said.

“You created it.””

Emily looked at the evidence spread across the desk.

The forged custody papers.

The false birth certificate.

The medical records.

The photograph.

The flash drive.

All the pieces finally fit.

Ryan hadn't simply betrayed her.

He had built an entire false reality around her family.

He had used her missing memories to decide which truths she was allowed to know.

Emily walked to the desk and picked up the original birth certificate.

She looked at both children.

Then she looked at Ryan.

“You don't get to decide who my children are anymore.””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“I know.””

The officer stepped beside him.

“Mr. Moretti, turn around.””

Ryan obeyed.

As the officer placed handcuffs around his wrists, Natalie began crying.

“Ryan…”

He looked at her.

She took one step forward.

“I didn't know it would go this far.””

Ryan stared at her.

“You knew enough.””

The officer led him toward the stairs.

Ryan stopped beside Emily.

For one final moment, they faced each other.

“I loved you,” he whispered.

Emily's expression didn't change.

“You loved having power over me.””

Ryan looked away.

Then he was gone.

The mansion fell silent.

Emily stood between her children.

Marcus came closer.

“I should have told you everything.””

Emily looked at him.

“Yes.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“I know.””

She looked toward the backyard.

The overturned kennel was still visible through the glass.

Ethan noticed.

“Mom?””

Emily turned.

“What?””

“Can we get rid of that?””

Emily looked at the kennel.

“Yes.””

She took his hand.

“Tonight.””

Madison took her other hand.

They walked outside together.

Marcus followed.

Emma remained behind for a moment, staring at the mansion.

Emily turned back.

“Emma.””

She looked up.

Emily held out her hand.

“You're coming too.””

Emma's face crumpled.

She took it.

Together, they walked into the garden.

The kennel stood crooked in the dirt.

Emily looked at it for a long moment.

Then she kicked the broken door open.

It fell flat against the grass.

Ethan watched.

Madison stood beside him.

Emily wrapped both children in her arms.

“No more secrets,” she whispered.

Ethan nodded.

Madison rested her head against Emily's shoulder.

And for the first time in years, Emily looked at her family and knew exactly who belonged beside her.

Not because someone had written it on a document.

Not because a husband had decided it.

Not because a secret had been buried.

May you like

But because the children were standing there, holding her hands.

And neither of them let go.
