The Boy Beside the Kennel / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Envelope

Emily stared at the envelope.

The mansion suddenly felt colder.

Ethan remained pressed against her side.

Ryan was still near the garden doors, watching.

Natalie stood behind him with her arms folded.

Emily walked toward the staircase.

Ryan spoke.

“Leave it.””

She stopped.

“Why?””

“Because it's private.””

Emily turned around.

“You left my son beside a dog kennel.””

Ryan's jaw flexed.

“Don't start.””

“You don't get to tell me what's private anymore.””

She climbed the first step.

Ryan's voice followed.

“Emily.””

She kept walking.

“Emily, I'm warning you.””

She reached the top.

The envelope was thick and expensive.

Her fingers closed around it.

She looked back.

Ryan had moved closer to the staircase.

Natalie whispered something into his ear.

He answered without looking at her.

Emily noticed.

That tiny exchange.

The comfort.

The familiarity.

The certainty.

It told her more than either of them realized.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Emily read the first line.

Then the second.

Her face drained of color.

Ethan looked up at her.

“What does it say?””

Emily folded the paper.

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

Ryan reached the top step.

“Give it to me.””

Emily stepped backward.

“No.””

Ryan held out his hand.

“You don't understand what you're reading.””

“Then explain it.””

“I don't have to.””

Emily looked at the paper again.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Not Ryan's.

A name she recognized.

A name that should never have appeared on anything connected to their family.

She looked at Ryan.

“Why is her name here?””

His silence answered first.

Natalie came up the stairs.

“Because you weren't here.””

Emily's eyes snapped toward her.

“You knew about this?””

Natalie smiled.

“I know everything that happens in this house.””

“That isn't your house.””

Natalie glanced around.

“Isn't it?””

Emily's hand tightened around the paper.

Ethan moved closer.

“Mom, can we go to my room?””

Emily looked toward the hallway.

His room.

The words felt strange now.

“Of course.””

They walked together.

Ryan followed.

“Don't open that door.””

Emily stopped.

She looked over her shoulder.

“Why?””

“Because there's nothing in there for him anymore.””

Emily slowly turned.

“That's the problem.””

She reached the bedroom door.

Her hand rested on the brass handle.

Ethan stood behind her.

“Mom?””

“Stay close.””

She opened it.

The room was immaculate.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Wrong.

A white crib stood where Ethan's bed had been.

A crystal mobile hung beneath a designer light fixture.

Cream-colored curtains covered the windows.

A rocking chair sat beside a small table holding framed ultrasound photographs.

A row of tiny baby shoes lined the wall.

Emily stared.

She couldn't breathe.

Ethan stepped into the room.

“Where are my drawings?””

Emily looked at him.

His voice cracked.

“My books?””

He walked toward the closet.

“Mom, where's my stuff?””

He opened the doors.

Empty.

Emily crossed the room.

She opened drawers.

Empty.

She checked beneath the crib.

Nothing.

Ethan's breathing quickened.

“My baseball cards were here.””

Emily knelt.

“I know.””

“My blue hoodie.””

“I know.””

“My picture of us.””

Emily swallowed.

“I know.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Did you throw everything away?””

“No.””

Ryan appeared in the doorway.

“They're stored.””

Emily stood.

“Where?””

Ryan didn't answer.

“Where are my son's things?””

“They're somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

Ryan sighed.

“Why are you turning this into a scene?””

Emily laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“A scene?””

She pointed at the crib.

“You erased his room.””

Ryan folded his arms.

“He's nine. He doesn't need a childish bedroom.””

“He needs a bed.””

“He can sleep somewhere else.””

Emily stared at him.

“Where?””

Ryan glanced toward Ethan.

The boy immediately lowered his eyes.

Emily saw it.

Again.

That fear.

She stepped between them.

“You're not speaking to him like that.””

Ryan scoffed.

“You've been gone for months, Emily.””

“I've been working.””

“You abandoned this family.””

Emily's eyes hardened.

“You told me to go.””

“You chose to go.””

“You said you'd take care of Ethan.””

“I did.””

Emily pointed toward the backyard.

“He was beside a kennel.””

Ryan's face remained blank.

“He was being difficult.””

Ethan whispered, “I wasn't.””

Ryan looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan shrank backward.

Emily turned immediately.

“Don't.””

Ryan frowned.

“I didn't do anything.””

“Exactly.””

Emily took Ethan's hand.

“Come on.””

Ryan stepped into the doorway.

“Where are you going?””

“Somewhere you can't reach him.””

“You're not taking him.””

Emily stopped.

She looked at Ryan.

Then at Natalie.

Then at the nursery.

Something clicked.

Not enough to explain everything.

But enough to tell her that the room wasn't simply about a baby.

It was about replacing someone.

Her son.

Her.

Their entire life.

Emily reached for Ethan.

“Stay behind me.””

Ryan's voice became low.

“If you walk out of this room with him, you won't like what happens next.””

Emily stared at him.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

Ryan smiled faintly.

“It's a promise.””

Emily's phone suddenly vibrated.

She pulled it from her coat.

One message.

Unknown number.

*DON'T TRUST RYAN.*

Another message appeared immediately.

*AND DON'T LET HIM KNOW YOU FOUND THE SECOND DOCUMENT.*

Emily froze.

She slowly looked toward the desk.

May you like

There was a locked drawer.

And Ryan had just noticed her looking at it.
