Chapter 4: The Name on the Paper

Emily stared at the birth certificate until the words blurred.

The room had gone completely silent.

Not peaceful.

Silent in the way a house becomes silent when everyone inside is waiting to see who will break first.

Ethan stood behind Emily, clutching the back of her coat.

Ryan's hand was still half-raised from where he had tried to stop her.

Natalie had lost all color in her face.

Emily slowly looked down at the certificate again.

The mother's name was hers.

The child's name was Ethan.

But under *Father*, there was another man's name.

A man Emily knew.

A man who had been dead for nearly ten years.

Her brother, Marcus.

Her own older brother.

Emily's lips parted.

“No.””

Ryan said nothing.

Emily looked at him.

“Why is my brother's name on Ethan's birth certificate?””

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“Put it back.””

“You forged this?””

“No.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“You can't?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“I said put it back.””

Emily held the certificate against her chest.

“You lied to me about my own child.””

Ryan's eyes hardened.

“I didn't lie about Ethan being yours.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Natalie suddenly spoke.

“Emily, you need to listen to him.””

Emily turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Natalie swallowed.

“I knew there were things you didn't understand.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I was trying to protect Ryan.””

Emily's expression changed.

“From me?””

Natalie didn't respond.

Ethan's voice trembled behind her.

“Mom… who is Marcus?””

Emily closed her eyes for a moment.

She couldn't answer.

Not yet.

Ryan reached for the certificate.

Emily pulled it away.

“Don't.””

“Emily.””

“You knew this document existed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my brother's name was on it.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I would eventually find it.””

Ryan's silence stretched.

Emily stepped closer.

“Why?””

Ryan looked at Ethan.

The boy immediately looked down.

Emily followed his gaze.

Something about that tiny movement made her blood run cold.

She crouched beside Ethan.

“Ethan.””

He looked at her.

“Did Dad ever tell you something about Uncle Marcus?””

Ethan hesitated.

Ryan's voice cut through the room.

“Don't involve him.””

Emily stood.

“I'm asking my son.””

Ethan looked between them.

Then whispered,

“He said Uncle Marcus wasn't really dead.””

Emily froze.

Ryan's face changed.

Natalie covered her mouth.

“What did you say?”” Emily asked.

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“He said Uncle Marcus was still watching me.””

Emily turned slowly toward Ryan.

“You told him that?””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

“I don't know.””

Emily's phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

She checked the screen.

A new message.

*ASK RYAN WHY HE RECEIVED MONEY FROM MARCUS THREE MONTHS AGO.*

Emily looked up.

Ryan's face had gone rigid.

She raised the phone.

“Three months ago.””

Ryan said nothing.

“You received money from Marcus three months ago?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Emily stared at him.

“Then why would someone send me that?””

“Because they're trying to manipulate you.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Natalie stepped closer.

“Emily, please.””

Emily turned.

“You keep saying my name like you care about me.””

Natalie's eyes flickered.

“I don't.””

Emily nodded.

“At least that's honest.””

She walked to the desk.

Ryan followed.

“Where are you going?””

“To find out what you were hiding.””

She picked up the bank statements.

Most were ordinary.

Mortgage.

Utilities.

Insurance.

Nursery purchases.

Then she found one page marked with a transfer.

The recipient was Ryan.

The sender was an account registered under a company Emily had never heard of.

The amount made her stomach twist.

“That's not Marcus's name.””

Ryan said nothing.

“But the account number…”

Emily looked at the last four digits.

She recognized them.

Her brother's old account.

She had seen it years ago.

Emily slowly looked at Ryan.

“You lied.””

Ryan's expression finally cracked.

“It isn't what you think.””

“Then what is it?””

“I was trying to keep Ethan safe.””

“By putting him outside?””

Ryan flinched.

Emily stepped closer.

“You keep using that word. Safe.””

She pointed at the backyard.

“Does that look safe to you?””

Ryan's eyes dropped.

For the first time, he had no answer.

Natalie suddenly moved toward the door.

Emily noticed.

“Where are you going?””

Natalie stopped.

“I need air.””

“No.””

Natalie looked back.

Emily's voice was quiet.

“You're staying.””

Natalie swallowed.

Ryan looked at her.

“Natalie.””

She stared at him.

“You said she would never find out.””

Emily's eyes narrowed.

Ryan turned sharply.

“Stop talking.””

Natalie realized her mistake.

Emily stepped toward her.

“What did you say?””

Natalie backed away.

“I didn't mean—”

“What did you mean?””

Ryan grabbed Natalie's arm.

“Enough.””

Natalie jerked free.

“You told me everything was handled.””

Emily's face went cold.

“What was handled?””

Natalie stared at Ryan.

Ryan stared back.

Then a loud metallic sound came from downstairs.

The front door.

Someone had entered the mansion.

Ryan's head snapped toward the hallway.

Emily heard footsteps approaching.

Slow.

Heavy.

Then a man's voice echoed from below.

“Ryan?””

Ryan went completely still.

Emily's eyes widened.

She knew that voice.

She hadn't heard it in ten years.

Ethan whispered,

“Mom?””

Emily stared toward the staircase.

The voice came again.

“Ryan, we need to talk.””

Emily tightened her grip on the birth certificate.

“Marcus?””

May you like

And from downstairs came the answer.

“Yes.””
