Chapter 5: The Secret Behind The Locked Door
The flashlight shook slightly.
The beam moved across the abandoned hospital hallway.
First, I saw the shoes.
Then the expensive coat.
Then the face.
My heart stopped.
“Mom?””
The word escaped my mouth before I could control it.
Evelyn stepped back.
Daniel froze.
Even Jayden looked confused.
Because the person standing in the doorway wasn’t a stranger.
It was my mother.
Margaret Hayes.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who held my hand through every difficult moment of my life.
The woman who cried with me when I lost my first child.
The woman who told me she wished she could take away my pain.
She was standing in the darkness of an abandoned hospital.
The same hospital where my baby disappeared.
“What are you doing here?”” I whispered.
Her face changed.
For a moment, she looked like she wanted to run.
Then she looked at Jayden.
And the fear in her eyes became something else.
Regret.
“Victoria…”
I stepped away from her.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No, don’t say my name like everything is normal.””
She opened her mouth.
But I didn’t let her speak.
“You knew.””
The hallway became silent.
“You knew about him.””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to tell you.””
The anger inside me exploded.
“Eight years.””
My voice echoed.
“Eight years, Mom.””
She looked down.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence was the final betrayal.
Jayden stood beside Ethan.
Watching.
Listening.
Learning that adults could create secrets bigger than children could understand.
I looked at my mother.
“You saw me cry every night.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“You watched me search for answers.””
Her lips trembled.
“I know.””
“You watched me believe my son was gone.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
She closed her eyes.
And when she opened them again, she looked older.
Much older.
“Because I was the one who made the decision.””
The words hit the air like a gunshot.
Daniel whispered:
“What?””
Evelyn looked away.
Jayden grabbed Ethan’s hand.
I stared at my mother.
“What decision?””
She took a shaky breath.
“The decision to hide Jayden.””
The hallway disappeared.
There was only her voice.
Only the truth.
Only the pain.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, you wouldn’t.””
She cried silently.
“I did.””
My legs felt weak.
I grabbed the wall for support.
“You?””
My voice barely worked.
“My own mother?””
She stepped closer.
“I thought I was saving you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Saving me?””
My eyes burned.
“You stole my child.””
“I saved him from dying.””
The words stopped me.
“What?””
My mother looked toward Jayden.
“When he was born, the doctors believed his heart condition was severe.””
I looked at Jayden.
He stood frozen.
“I knew you were terrified.””
She continued.
“You were young. Alone. You were already breaking.””
“That doesn’t give you the right.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know that now.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew he survived.””
My mother looked at him.
“Yes.””
“You let Victoria believe he died.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked disgusted.
“Why?””
My mother’s hands shook.
“Because someone convinced me it was the only way.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
But her eyes moved toward Daniel.
Everyone noticed.
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
My mother whispered:
“I didn’t know what would happen.””
I looked between them.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel stepped back.
“Don’t.””
My mother looked at me.
“I made the choice.””
Her voice broke.
“But someone gave me the information.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
The lights flickered back on.
Everyone stared.
Then my mother said:
“Your father.””
The world went silent.
My father had died five years ago.
He wasn’t here to defend himself.
He wasn’t here to explain.
He was just another ghost from a past full of secrets.
“My father?””
My mother nodded slowly.
“He found out about the diagnosis before you did.””
I felt sick.
“How?””
“He knew someone at the hospital.””
Daniel looked toward the floor.
Evelyn whispered:
“Richard Hayes.””
My father’s name.
The man everyone admired.
The successful businessman.
The loving grandfather.
The man who always told me I was his greatest achievement.
My hands trembled.
“He wanted Jayden hidden?””
My mother looked away.
“He thought he was protecting the family.””
I stared at her.
“From what?””
She swallowed.
“From scandal.””
The word disgusted me.
“Scandal?””
My voice rose.
“He was a baby.””
“I know.””
“He was my son.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
My mother covered her face.
“Because your father believed people would see him as weak.””
I couldn’t understand.
“What?””
“He believed a child with a serious medical condition would damage the family image.””
The anger that filled me was almost unbearable.
A child.
A helpless baby.
Was treated like a problem.
Like a secret.
Like something to hide.
Jayden looked down.
And that broke my heart.
Because he had heard every word.
He knew.
He finally knew why nobody came.
Why nobody searched enough.
Why nobody fought for him.
I walked toward him.
“Jayden.””
He looked up.
His eyes were wet.
“Was I really that bad?””
The question destroyed me.
“What?””
He wiped his face quickly.
“Was I really something people had to hide?””
“No.””
I knelt in front of him.
“No, baby.””
The word slipped out.
Baby.
The word I hadn’t said in eight years.
His expression changed.
I reached for his hand.
“You were never the problem.””
His lips trembled.
“Then why did everyone leave?””
I had no answer.
Because the truth was worse.
Adults had failed him.
Not because he wasn’t worth loving.
Because they were afraid.
I pulled him into my arms.
For a moment, he stayed completely still.
Like he didn’t know what to do.
Then slowly…
He hugged me back.
And I felt something inside me finally break open.
A part of my heart that had been frozen for eight years.
Across the room, Ethan watched.
Then he stepped closer.
“Can I hug too?””
I cried.
“Yes.””
Both boys wrapped their arms around me.
Two sons.
Two lives.
One family broken by a secret.
And maybe, finally, beginning to heal.
But the moment didn’t last.
Because Evelyn suddenly looked toward the elevator.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Daniel noticed.
“What is it?””
She whispered:
“We need to leave.””
I stood.
“Why?””
Her expression became terrified.
“Because they know we found the room.””
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone was walking through the abandoned hospital.
Coming closer.
Daniel moved in front of us.
“Who is it?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You know.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Her voice became almost a whisper.
“The person who helped Richard hide Jayden.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked at me.
And before she could answer, the footsteps stopped.
Right outside the door.
A shadow appeared under the doorway.
Then a voice spoke.
A voice I knew.
A voice I had trusted.
A voice that had comforted me for years.
“Victoria.””
I froze.
Because the person standing outside wasn’t coming to find us.
They were coming to stop us.
The door slowly opened.
And the person stepped inside.
My breath disappeared.
May you like
Because the person who had helped steal my son…
Was someone I had invited into my home every single day.
