Chapter 9: The Child They Couldn’t Control
The photo blurred in my hands.
Not because the image was unclear.
Because my eyes filled with tears so quickly that I could barely see.
Ethan.
My little boy.
Standing outside our house.
Alone.
The message remained on the screen.
*I have your other son.*
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The abandoned hospital room disappeared.
The secrets.
The documents.
The lies.
Everything became smaller than one terrifying thought.
Ethan was in danger.
I pressed the phone against my chest.
“No.””
The word came out broken.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Let me see.””
I handed him the phone.
The color drained from his face.
“When was this sent?””
I checked the time.
“Two minutes ago.””
Daniel looked toward the exit.
“We need to leave.””
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Victoria, wait.””
I pulled away.
“No.””
She froze.
“I already waited eight years.””
My voice shook.
“I waited while everyone around me decided what I could handle.””
I looked at everyone.
“My son needs me now.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew.
This time, there was no excuse.
No secret.
No protection.
No more waiting.
We rushed out of the hospital.
The city lights blurred as we drove back.
Daniel was behind the wheel.
His hands were tight around it.
Too tight.
Like he was trying to hold together everything that had fallen apart.
Jayden sat beside me in the back seat.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
I looked at him.
“You okay?””
He nodded.
But he wasn’t.
Nobody was.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
The words surprised me.
“For what?””
He looked down.
“Because now Ethan is in danger because of me.””
My heart broke.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“Listen to me.””
He looked up.
“You are not the reason bad people make bad choices.””
His eyes filled.
“But everywhere I go…”
“No.””
I took his hand.
“Don’t carry the blame for what adults did.””
He stared at our hands.
Then quietly said:
“You really are my mom, aren’t you?””
The question almost destroyed me.
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
A small tear fell down his cheek.
“Then why did it take so long?””
I had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
The truth was painful.
I should have found him.
I should have fought harder.
I should have questioned the people around me.
But I couldn’t change eight years.
I could only fight for what was in front of me now.
The car stopped outside our house.
The front door was open.
My heart stopped.
“Ethan?””
I ran.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
“Ethan!””
I moved through every room.
The living room.
The kitchen.
The hallway.
Nothing.
Then I saw it.
A small toy on the floor.
Ethan’s favorite superhero figure.
Next to it was a note.
I picked it up.
Three words.
*Come alone, Victoria.*
Daniel came behind me.
“No.””
I turned.
“I’m going.””
“Absolutely not.””
I looked at him.
“My child is missing.””
“I know.””
“Then don’t stop me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Because that’s what they want.””
I stared.
“What?””
“They want you emotional.””
My anger rose.
“Don’t tell me how to feel.””
“I’m not.””
His voice softened.
“I’m telling you because I’ve made this mistake before.””
The words stopped me.
“What mistake?””
Daniel looked down.
“Following someone else’s rules.””
Silence.
He took a breath.
“This is what they did with Jayden.””
My heart tightened.
“They controlled every move.””
He looked at the note.
“They’re trying to do it again.””
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Then a small voice.
“Mom?””
My heart jumped.
“Ethan!””
I ran upstairs.
The bedroom door was open.
And there he was.
Sitting on the floor.
Safe.
Crying.
I rushed to him.
“Oh my God.””
I pulled him into my arms.
He held onto me tightly.
“I’m sorry.””
I pulled back.
“Sorry for what?””
His face was wet with tears.
“I opened the door.””
My stomach dropped.
“What door?””
“The basement door.””
I froze.
Our basement.
A place we rarely used.
“What happened?””
Ethan looked scared.
“A woman was there.””
Everyone behind me went still.
Daniel stepped forward.
“What woman?””
Ethan looked at him.
“She knew Grandma.””
My mother’s face changed.
“What?””
Ethan nodded.
“She said she was helping our family.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did she look like?””
Ethan thought.
“She had a scar.””
Nobody spoke.
Because we all knew.
Rebecca.
But Rebecca was supposed to be hiding.
She was supposed to be running.
Not standing in my house.
“She didn’t take me,” Ethan said.
I hugged him tighter.
“Then what happened?””
“She said she wanted to talk to you.””
I looked around.
“She left?””
Ethan nodded.
“She gave me this.””
He reached into his pocket.
A small object.
An old key.
My heart dropped.
The same kind of key Jayden had found.
But this one was different.
Attached to it was a hospital tag.
I took it.
And read the name.
Not Jayden.
Not Ethan.
A third name.
A baby who had been hidden.
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He stepped back.
“That’s not possible.””
I stared at him.
“What is it?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“That’s a record number.””
“For what?””
He swallowed.
“For another child.””
The room went silent.
Another child.
My mother sat down.
“No.””
Evelyn looked at the key.
Her face turned pale.
“I thought there were only two.””
I turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“Richard had another secret.””
My stomach twisted.
“What secret?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He wasn’t just hiding Jayden.””
The air felt heavy.
“He was hiding every child connected to the hospital scandal.””
Daniel looked at the key.
“The records.””
Amelia nodded slowly.
“Rebecca wasn’t trying to hide one child.””
She looked at me.
“She was hiding the evidence.””
I held Ethan close.
“But why threaten me?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, I answered immediately.
“Where is she?””
Rebecca’s voice came through.
“You found Ethan.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You were in my house.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A pause.
“Because I needed you to understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Jayden wasn’t the only child they took.””
My grip tightened.
“Who else?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“What’s the right one?””
Rebecca’s voice became quieter.
“How many children did your family destroy to protect their name?””
I looked at the key.
My hands shook.
“What are you talking about?””
“Your father wasn’t protecting a fortune.””
She paused.
“He was protecting a secret.””
The line crackled.
“Meet me where it started.””
“Where?””
“Riverside Hospital.””
My eyes narrowed.
“It’s abandoned.””
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“It’s been waiting.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then at the people around me.
My mother.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Amelia.
Jayden.
Every person connected to this nightmare.
And suddenly I understood.
This was never only about finding my lost son.
It was about uncovering everything my family buried.
We returned to Riverside Hospital before midnight.
The old building looked different under the moonlight.
Less like a ruin.
More like a grave.
Inside, Rebecca was waiting.
Standing in the same hallway where we found the folder.
But she wasn’t alone.
Beside her was a stack of old files.
Hundreds of them.
She looked at me.
“You finally came.””
I stepped forward.
“Where is the truth?””
She looked at Jayden.
Then Ethan.
Then me.
“The truth is…”
She touched the files.
“…your family wasn’t hiding one child.””
She opened the first folder.
“They were hiding an entire system.””
My breath stopped.
“And your father wasn’t the mastermind.””
I stared.
“Then who was?””
Rebecca looked directly at me.
Her eyes filled with regret.
“The person who taught Richard how to do it.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Rebecca slowly turned.
Her finger pointed behind me.
Everyone followed her gaze.
And the person standing there made my heart stop.
Because it was someone I thought had been helping us all along.
Someone who had cried with me.
Someone who had promised to uncover the truth.
Someone who had just walked into the room carrying a weapon.
And they said:
“Rebecca talks too much.””
May you like
The final secret was finally standing in front of me.
And it was the one person I never thought I would have to fear.
