The Boy With The Same Eyes / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The door opened slowly.

The sound of the old hinges scraping against the metal filled the abandoned hospital room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then the person stepped into the light.

And my entire body went cold.

“Dr. Amelia Brooks…”

The name left my mouth like a broken whisper.

My mother looked away.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Evelyn looked like she had been expecting this moment for years.

But I…

I couldn’t understand.

Amelia.

My closest friend.

The woman who had sat beside me during my pregnancy.

The woman who brought me food when I was too tired to cook.

The woman who held my hand after I lost Jayden.

The woman who cried with me.

The woman who told me:

“Some pain never leaves, Victoria. You just learn how to carry it.””

She had been there.

Every step.

Every tear.

Every birthday.

Every anniversary of the day I lost my son.

She wasn’t just someone I knew.

She was family.

“Amelia?”” I said again.

She stood in the doorway, wearing a long dark coat, her face calm but exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words made my heart sink.

Because people only said sorry when they had already done something unforgivable.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt almost as much as the betrayal itself.

“Daniel.””

His eyes met mine.

“I didn’t know she was involved.””

Amelia looked at him.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

The tension between them was immediate.

Old.

Personal.

I felt it before I understood it.

“You two know each other.””

Neither answered.

I stepped backward.

“How many people knew?””

My voice shook.

“How many people knew my son was alive?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Jayden stood behind me.

I could feel him watching.

Listening.

Learning that the adults who were supposed to protect him had all been hiding something.

Amelia finally spoke.

“I knew.””

I stared at her.

“How long?””

She looked down.

“Since the day he was born.””

The words cut deeper than anything else.

The day he was born.

The day I held him.

The day I loved him.

The day someone decided I didn’t deserve the truth.

“You were there?””

Amelia nodded.

“I was a medical intern at Riverside Hospital.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You told me you weren’t working there.””

“I lied.””

The honesty almost made it worse.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because Richard asked me to.””

My father’s name again.

The name that kept appearing like a ghost.

I shook my head.

“My father.””

Amelia nodded.

“He believed he was protecting the family.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice became sharper.

“Everyone keeps using that word.””

Protecting.

A beautiful word people used when they wanted permission to hurt someone.

Amelia looked at Jayden.

“He wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Jayden stiffened.

I immediately stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

Amelia looked surprised.

“Victoria—”

“Don’t talk about him like he was a mistake.””

Her expression softened.

“He wasn’t.””

“Then why did everyone treat him like one?””

She had no answer.

Because there was no answer.

The truth was simple.

They were scared.

And their fear destroyed a child’s life.

Evelyn moved closer.

“You knew Richard’s plan.””

Amelia looked at her.

“Yes.””

“You helped him.””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

Jayden looked at Amelia.

“Why?””

The question was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Amelia’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked truly broken.

“Because I was young.””

Jayden stared.

“That’s your reason?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“It’s not an excuse.””

“Then what is?””

Amelia looked at him.

“I was afraid.””

Jayden laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“Everyone was afraid.””

His voice cracked.

“Everyone was afraid except me.””

The room became silent.

Because that was the truth nobody wanted to face.

A child had been the bravest person in the room.

Amelia looked down.

“I thought Richard would give you a good life.””

My anger returned.

“You thought?””

She looked at me.

“I thought your family had the resources to help you.””

I stepped closer.

“You never checked?””

Her face fell.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“After a few months.””

“And?””

She looked away.

“That was when I found out Richard had arranged for you to believe Jayden died.””

My breathing stopped.

“You knew.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

My own friend knew.

My own mother knew.

My own husband knew pieces.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

I opened my eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Amelia whispered:

“Because Richard threatened me.””

“With what?””

She looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

Amelia said quietly:

“He threatened to destroy Daniel.””

Everyone looked at him.

I frowned.

“What does Daniel have to do with this?””

Amelia hesitated.

Then she reached into her coat pocket.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this six years ago.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Amelia.””

But she ignored him.

She handed it to me.

“What is it?””

“Something Richard never wanted you to see.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A hospital hallway.

A younger Daniel standing beside my father.

My father was holding a folder.

Daniel looked angry.

Scared.

And in the background…

A hospital bassinet.

With a tiny baby inside.

My hands started shaking.

“When was this taken?””

Amelia answered:

“The night Jayden was moved.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You were there.””

Daniel looked destroyed.

“Victoria…”

“You were there.””

His silence confirmed it.

I felt something inside me break again.

“You held him.””

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“You held my baby.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with pain.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you bring him to me?””

His voice broke.

“Because I thought I had time.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

He looked at Jayden.

“I thought I could find proof. I thought I could stop your father.””

“And you failed.””

The words came quietly.

But they hurt.

Daniel lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Jayden looked at him.

“You knew my mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you look for me?””

“Yes.””

“Did you find me?””

“No.””

Jayden looked away.

And somehow that hurt Daniel more than anger would have.

Amelia stepped forward.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at her.

She took a deep breath.

“Richard wasn’t acting alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

Amelia looked at the hospital folder.

“The person who helped erase Jayden’s records.””

A pause.

“The person who controlled the medical files.””

Daniel whispered:

“Rebecca.””

Amelia nodded.

“But Rebecca didn’t disappear.””

The room went still.

“What?””

“She changed her name.””

My fingers tightened.

“She’s alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Amelia looked toward the hallway.

Her face filled with fear.

“She’s been closer than anyone realized.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Then a sound echoed through the hospital.

A phone ringing.

Not ours.

An old hospital phone.

Somewhere inside the building.

Evelyn whispered:

“No…”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She backed away.

“That phone only rings when someone wants us to know they’re here.””

The ringing continued.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nobody moved.

Then Jayden slowly walked toward the sound.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But I think it’s for me.””

My heart stopped.

The phone rang again.

Jayden looked at the hallway.

And then the caller ID screen on the old hospital phone lit up.

A name appeared.

A name none of us expected.

A name that proved the person who had been controlling everything was not hiding anymore.

May you like

It was coming back for him.

*Victoria Hayes.*
