Chapter 6: The Father Behind the Missing Years

Nobody spoke after the stranger said those words.

The birthday candles had burned down almost completely.

The flames that had once filled the room with warmth now looked fragile, barely holding on.

My mother stared at the man standing in the doorway.

Not with recognition.

With fear.

“Who are you?”” Brielle demanded again.

The man stepped inside slowly.

He wasn’t aggressive.

He didn’t need to be.

The confidence in his movements told me he already knew something we didn’t.

Something that gave him power.

“My name is Daniel Carter.””

He placed the folder on the table.

“And I knew your father.””

My mother’s face changed.

A name she had buried.

A memory she had locked away.

Something passed through her eyes.

Pain.

“Richard,” she whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Richard Hayes.””

I looked at my mother.

“Dad?””

The word felt strange.

Because my father had never been part of my life.

I knew his name.

I knew he existed.

But he was always a blank space in our family story.

A photograph missing from an album.

A door nobody opened.

My mother had always told us he left before we were old enough to remember.

She said some people were not meant to stay.

But now another person was standing in our house, telling us there was more.

Brielle looked at Daniel.

“What does my father have to do with Liana?””

Daniel looked at the bracelet.

“Everything.””

Liana stiffened.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

He pulled out one photograph and placed it on the table.

It showed my mother.

Young.

Barely twenty years old.

Standing beside a man.

My father.

Richard.

But there was something else.

A third person.

A woman.

My grandmother.

I picked up the photograph.

“They knew each other?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandmother and Richard were close.””

My mother shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“No,” she repeated.

Her voice became sharper.

“My mother hated Richard.””

“Because he found out the truth.””

The room went silent.

Brielle looked at Mom.

“What truth?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Daniel continued.

“Richard discovered that Eleanor’s mother was involved in something illegal.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of something?””

Daniel looked at Liana.

“Changing identities.””

Nobody moved.

Liana’s expression changed.

“Mine?””

Daniel nodded.

“She wasn’t just adopted.””

He opened another document.

“She was registered under a different name.””

Liana stared at the paper.

“My entire life was built on a lie?””

Daniel looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

Brielle stepped closer.

“Wait.””

Her voice shook.

“If Richard knew, why didn’t he tell Mom?””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Because he tried.””

My mother froze.

“What?””

“He tried to come back.””

She stared at him.

“When?””

“After Liana disappeared.””

My mother’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because he left.””

Daniel looked at her carefully.

“Did he?””

The question hurt.

Because suddenly, everyone was questioning memories they had lived with for decades.

I looked at my mother.

“Mom?””

She sat down slowly.

“I thought he abandoned us.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what you were supposed to believe.””

Brielle’s eyes narrowed.

“Supposed to?””

Daniel pulled another document from the folder.

“This is a police report.””

My mother took it.

Her hands shook as she read.

“What is this?””

“A missing person report.””

She looked confused.

“Whose?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

My mother’s eyes moved to the page.

Then widened.

“Richard.””

Nobody spoke.

“He was reported missing?””

Daniel nodded.

“Three weeks after Liana was taken.””

The room felt smaller.

I looked at Brielle.

She looked just as shocked as me.

“My father disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“That is the question everyone has been trying to answer.””

Liana crossed her arms.

“So my mother took me because she believed she was protecting me.””

Daniel nodded.

“And your father disappeared because he tried to expose it.””

My mother stared at him.

“But why didn’t I know?””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“Because someone made sure you didn’t.””

The words were quiet.

But they landed hard.

My mother looked down.

“My own family…”

She couldn’t finish.

Brielle looked at Daniel.

“Who?””

Daniel was silent.

Then he said:

“Your grandmother wasn’t working alone.””

The room froze.

My mother looked up.

“What?””

“She had help.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the old letter.

Then at the bracelet.

“Someone inside the hospital.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Someone helped steal a baby?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Liana looked sick.

“My whole life…”

She stopped.

Because there were no words big enough.

I reached across the table and held her hand.

She looked surprised.

Maybe because nobody had done that before.

Maybe because she spent her whole life believing she didn’t belong.

“You’re here now,” I said.

Her eyes filled.

A small smile appeared.

Then it disappeared when Daniel spoke again.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pulled out another photograph.

This one was newer.

Much newer.

It showed my grandmother.

Standing outside a building.

And beside her was someone else.

Someone familiar.

My heart stopped.

“Wait.””

I grabbed the photo.

“No.””

Brielle looked over my shoulder.

Then her face changed.

“Who is that?””

I stared at the picture.

Because I knew the person standing beside Grandma.

Everyone in our family knew him.

The man who had attended holidays.

The man who sent birthday cards.

The man who had been invited into our home for years.

The man my mother trusted.

I whispered:

“Uncle Marcus.””

My mother’s face went white.

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Marcus knew.””

Brielle stepped back.

“My uncle?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“He helped your grandmother hide Liana.””

The room exploded.

“Stop lying!”” Brielle shouted.

For the first time all night, she lost control.

“You don’t get to walk into our house and accuse our family!””

Daniel didn’t react.

“I understand why you don’t want to believe me.””

“You don’t know anything about us.””

“I know enough.””

He pointed toward the bracelet.

“Your grandmother kept records.””

My mother looked at him.

“Where?””

Daniel reached into the folder.

“She left one final message.””

He handed my mother an envelope.

This one was different.

Newer.

Sealed.

My mother stared at it.

“Where did you get this?””

“From Richard.””

Everyone froze.

Brielle whispered:

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“He left it with me before he disappeared.””

My mother’s hands trembled.

“Richard is alive?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told us everything.

My mother stood.

“Tell me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know where he is.””

Her face fell.

“But?””

Daniel took a breath.

“But he wanted you to know one thing.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Liana.

Then at Brielle.

Then at me.

“He never stopped looking for his daughter.””

My mother covered her mouth.

The pain in her eyes was unbearable.

After thirty-six years of believing she had been abandoned, she was finally learning maybe she had been searching for someone who had been searching for her too.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten note.

Richard’s handwriting.

She recognized it instantly.

Her hands shook as she read.

Then she whispered:

“He knew.””

“What?”” I asked.

My mother looked up.

“He knew where Liana was.””

Everyone went still.

Brielle stepped closer.

“How?””

My mother looked at the note.

Her face filled with fear.

“Because he wrote that he saw her.””

Liana froze.

“Where?””

My mother’s eyes moved down the page.

Then she read the final line.

“He said he saw Liana ten years ago…”

A pause.

“And she wasn’t alone.””

The room went silent.

“Who was she with?”” Brielle asked.

My mother looked up.

Her voice barely existed.

“She was with the person who took her.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“And that person is the reason I came here tonight.””

He looked at the front door.

At the darkness outside.

Then he said:

May you like

“Because they know Liana is back.””

A second later, the lights in the house went out.
