Chapter 8: The Daughter Hidden in Plain Sight

The room went silent after Marcus said my name.

Not a normal silence.

The kind where every person is waiting for someone to say he’s wrong.

Someone to laugh.

Someone to tell us this was another cruel misunderstanding.

But nobody did.

Because my mother’s face told me everything.

She wasn’t confused.

She was terrified.

“Camille…” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Mom?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that scared me more than Marcus’s words.

Because my mother always had something to say.

A lesson.

A reassurance.

A way to make the world feel safe again.

But now she looked like the world had disappeared beneath her feet.

Brielle stepped between us.

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Marcus looked at her sadly.

“I wish it wasn’t.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You expect us to believe that Camille was some missing baby?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I expect you to ask your mother.””

Every eye in the room turned toward Eleanor.

My mother.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who kissed my forehead when I was sick.

The woman who stayed awake when I had nightmares.

The woman who taught me what love was.

And suddenly, for the first time in my life, I wondered what else I didn’t know.

“Mom.””

My voice cracked.

“Tell me he’s wrong.””

She looked at me.

The pain in her eyes was worse than any answer.

“I didn’t know.””

Those three words broke something inside me.

“You didn’t know what?””

My mother sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know everything.””

Brielle stared at her.

“Mom.””

“I swear.””

Her hands trembled.

“When I had the babies, I was told there were complications.””

She looked at me.

“At first, I thought I had two daughters.””

Liana whispered:

“And then?””

Mom closed her eyes.

“Then they told me one baby was gone.””

Nobody moved.

“I went home with Brielle.””

She looked at my sister.

“And I spent years grieving a child I thought I lost.””

Then she looked at Liana.

“I never knew she was alive.””

Liana’s eyes filled.

Mom turned toward me.

“And then there was you.””

I felt numb.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“You were placed in my arms months later.””

My heart stopped.

“Months later?””

“Yes.””

The room spun.

“What are you saying?””

My mother wiped her tears.

“I was told you were an orphaned infant who needed a home.””

Brielle looked horrified.

“You adopted her?””

Mom nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“You never told me.””

“Because I didn’t know.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought I was just being given a second chance after losing Liana.””

The words hurt.

Because suddenly my entire identity felt like a story someone else had written.

“Was I adopted?””

My mother looked at me.

The answer was in her silence.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

The word landed heavier than anything else that night.

I stepped backward.

Nobody reached for me.

Nobody knew if they had the right.

My whole life.

My memories.

My childhood.

Everything I knew was still real.

But now there was another truth underneath it.

A truth hidden from me.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

My mother cried.

“Because I didn’t know the truth.””

Marcus looked down.

“Your grandmother did.””

I turned toward him.

“She knew?””

He nodded.

“She knew all three babies were alive.””

My hands curled into fists.

“So my grandmother stole Liana and gave me away?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

Brielle’s face changed.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Because she believed she could control the future.””

“That makes no sense.””

“She believed the family carried a curse.””

Liana shook her head.

“That’s not a reason.””

“No,” Marcus said quietly.

“It isn’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Your grandmother was obsessed with protecting the family name.””

Brielle looked at him.

“What does that have to do with us?””

Daniel glanced at me.

“With Camille.””

I felt everyone’s attention shift.

“Why me?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Marcus said:

“Because your birth was the secret she feared most.””

I swallowed.

“What secret?””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Your father wasn’t Richard.””

My mother looked up sharply.

“What?””

The room froze.

I stared at Marcus.

“What did you say?””

He looked at my mother.

“She never told you?””

My mother looked devastated.

“No.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Marcus.””

But he continued.

“Camille’s birth was connected to a scandal your grandmother spent her life hiding.””

I felt anger replacing fear.

“Stop talking about me like I’m a document.””

Marcus looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

He nodded.

“You were born from a relationship Eleanor had before Richard.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Stop.””

I looked at her.

“Is it true?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Not because she had a past.

Everyone had a past.

Because I realized how many pieces of my own story had been hidden behind other people’s choices.

“Who was my father?””

My mother looked away.

“I don’t know.””

The room froze.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I was young. I was scared. Your grandmother convinced me to keep it secret.””

Brielle stared.

“So she knew.””

“Yes.””

“And she still took Liana?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus answered.

“Because she believed Camille was the child who would expose everything.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because your father was someone powerful.””

The room became colder.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

And that scared me.

Because everyone seemed to know something except me.

My mother stood.

“No more.””

Everyone looked at her.

“No more secrets.””

Her voice shook.

But it was stronger than before.

“I lost thirty-six years with Liana because people decided what I could handle.””

She looked at Brielle.

“She grew up believing I abandoned her.””

Then at me.

“And Camille grew up not knowing who she was.””

Then at Marcus.

“And I spent my life trusting people who lied to me.””

She stepped forward.

“I want the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother looked at Marcus.

“Who was Camille’s father?””

Marcus reached into his folder.

He pulled out another photograph.

A man.

Young.

Handsome.

Standing beside my grandmother.

I looked at the picture.

And my heart stopped.

Because I knew him.

Not personally.

But from every newspaper article.

Every television interview.

Every framed picture in the city.

He was a man whose name everyone knew.

A man who built hospitals.

A man who donated millions.

A man people called a hero.

My mother stared at the photo.

Her face went pale.

“No…”

Brielle took the picture.

Then looked at me.

“Camille…”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

“His name is Jonathan Whitmore.””

The name echoed in the room.

The founder of one of the largest medical organizations in the country.

A man whose face was everywhere.

A man who had been praised as a symbol of kindness.

I looked at my mother.

“Did he know about me?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“He did.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Marcus’s voice was barely audible.

“He knew.””

My mother looked horrified.

“How?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because he was the one who ordered the records changed.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because if anyone found out the truth about that night…”

A pause.

“He would lose everything.””

Daniel suddenly picked up the folder.

His face had changed.

“What?””

He looked through the documents quickly.

Then he froze.

“What is it?”” Brielle asked.

Daniel looked at Liana.

Then at me.

Then at the hospital bracelet.

“He didn’t just hide the truth.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did he do?””

Daniel slowly turned the final page.

“He has been searching for all three of you.””

A silence followed.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A message.

I looked down.

And the words made my hands shake.

*Camille, I know you finally learned who you are.*

Another message appeared.

*Come alone if you want to know why your mother was never supposed to raise you.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the final message arrived.

*Your real father has been waiting for you.*
