Chapter 9: The Truth Waiting in the Old Hospital
Nobody knew what to say after the message appeared on my phone.
The words sat there glowing against the screen.
*Your real father has been waiting for you.*
I read it again.
Then again.
Like the meaning would somehow change.
It didn’t.
My entire life had been a story with missing pages.
And now, all at once, those missing pages were being forced open.
Brielle took the phone from my hand.
“No.””
Her voice was immediate.
“No, you’re not going.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
“I’m your sister.””
The word stopped me.
My sister.
A few hours ago, I thought I had one.
Now I had two.
Brielle softened.
“Camille…”
“I need answers.””
“We all do.””
Liana stepped closer.
“But you don’t have to find them alone.””
I looked at her.
There was something strange about hearing those words from her.
Because she was the person who had spent her whole life alone.
And now she was offering me protection.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Liana frowned.
“For what?””
“For everything you lost.””
She looked down.
Then quietly said:
“We both lost something.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because she was right.
She lost a mother.
I lost the truth.
Brielle lost the childhood she could have shared with a twin.
And Mom lost thirty-six years of believing lies.
My mother walked toward me.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a deep breath.
“You’re not going to meet him alone.””
“Mom—”
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“I spent years letting other people make choices for my children.””
She looked at Liana.
“At the hospital.””
Then at Brielle.
“After.””
Then at me.
“Never again.””
For the first time that night, I saw something different in my mother.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Strength.
Daniel looked at the message.
“This is a trap.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You agree?””
Marcus sighed.
“Jonathan doesn’t invite people into his world unless he already has control.””
Brielle stared at him.
“You know him.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
“You worked with him.””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.””
My mother stepped back.
“Marcus…”
“I was young.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You were my brother.””
“I know.””
“You helped destroy my family.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Nobody spoke.
The honesty somehow made it worse.
Because lies could be fought.
Regret was harder.
Daniel looked at him.
“Tell them everything.””
Marcus stayed silent.
Then finally said:
“I was working at the hospital when Liana was born.””
My mother’s face tightened.
“You never told me.””
“I was scared.””
“You were twenty-two.””
“I was threatened.””
Everyone went still.
“By who?”” Brielle asked.
Marcus looked at the photo of Jonathan Whitmore.
“Him.””
The name filled the room.
“The man everyone thinks is a hero.””
Daniel nodded.
“Jonathan built his reputation on charity. But behind closed doors, he controlled everything.””
Marcus continued.
“He had influence over doctors, records, administrators.””
My mother whispered:
“And my mother?””
“She was convinced she was protecting the family.””
Marcus looked at Liana.
“But Jonathan convinced her that hiding the truth was necessary.””
Liana crossed her arms.
“Why?””
Marcus looked away.
“Because Jonathan believed some people were born to carry power.””
Brielle frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It didn’t to me either.””
Marcus shook his head.
“But your grandmother believed him.””
I looked at him.
“And me?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Your existence threatened his plans.””
“Why?””
He hesitated.
Then Daniel answered.
“Because Jonathan was afraid you would inherit something.””
My expression hardened.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Your father’s family owned part of the medical network Jonathan wanted.””
I stared.
“So this was about money?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not just money.””
“Then what?””
He looked at me.
“Legacy.””
The word sounded ridiculous.
Until I remembered something.
My entire life, people had fought over things I didn’t even know existed.
A name.
A bloodline.
A family history.
All while I was just trying to live.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from the same number.
*I know they are with you.*
Brielle’s face changed.
“He knows.””
Daniel nodded.
“He’s watching.””
The room went quiet.
“How?”” I asked.
Daniel looked around.
“Because someone told him.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
He shook his head immediately.
“No.””
Brielle stepped forward.
“How do we know?””
May you like
Marcus looked hurt.
“Because if I wanted to betray you, I wouldn’t have brought you
