Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Wall

The pounding came again.

Three hard strikes.

Then silence.

I stood frozen in Emma’s bedroom, still holding the phone against my ear even though the recording had already ended.

My mind refused to accept what I had just heard.

A five-year-old girl.

My daughter.

Trapped somewhere beneath the house.

And she wasn’t alone.

“Daniel…”

Vanessa’s voice sounded distant.

I slowly lowered the phone.

“Who is down there?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“I don’t know.””

The words came too quickly.

Too easily.

I looked at her.

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No, you’re telling me what you think I’ll accept.””

Her face tightened.

“I never wanted this.””

That sentence stopped me.

Not because it made sense.

Because it didn’t.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Toward the floor.

Toward the place where my daughter’s voice had disappeared.

“I made a mistake.””

The air seemed to change.

“What mistake?””

She didn’t answer.

Noah stood beside me, holding onto my jacket.

“Dad…”

I looked down.

His eyes were full of fear.

“Can we get Emma now?””

That broke something inside me.

Because he wasn’t asking if she was okay.

He already knew she wasn’t.

He was asking if I could bring her back.

I took his hand.

“Yes.””

My voice came out steady.

Even though I didn’t feel steady.

“We’re getting your sister.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“And you’re going to tell me everything.””

She looked away.

“I can explain.””

“Start.””

She walked downstairs slowly.

Not like someone leading us.

Like someone being forced toward something she had spent months avoiding.

We followed.

The house that once held our family memories now felt like a place full of locked doors.

Every room looked different.

Every shadow felt like it was hiding something.

When we reached the laundry room, Vanessa stopped.

She stared at the floor panel.

“I never planned for this.””

“For what?””

“For you to find out.””

My stomach dropped.

“You’re admitting it?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I’m saying I never wanted anyone to know.””

Noah stepped closer to me.

I felt his small hand tighten around mine.

I reached for the handle.

Vanessa grabbed my wrist again.

“Wait.””

I pulled away.

“No more waiting.””

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“I have been listening.””

My voice rose.

“I listened when you said I was overreacting. I listened when you canceled my visits. I listened when you told me Emma was having nightmares.””

I pointed at the floor.

“But my daughter is underneath this house.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“She wasn’t supposed to be there.””

The sentence made me stop.

“What?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“She wasn’t supposed to be there.””

A terrible silence followed.

Noah looked between us.

“Mom…”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I built this room before we divorced.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What room?””

She looked down.

“The basement.””

I stared at her.

“We don’t have a basement.””

“Yes, we do.””

My skin went cold.

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because when my father owned this house, he built one.””

I looked around.

“When?””

“Before we bought it.””

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because I wanted to forget it existed.””

The answer made no sense.

Not enough.

“What happened down there?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

“Vanessa.””

She looked toward Noah.

Then back at me.

“When we moved in, I found the entrance.””

“Where?””

“Behind the laundry room wall.””

I stared at the floor.

The hidden handle.

The strange key.

The locked space beneath us.

“You knew this whole time.””

“I sealed it.””

“You sealed it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because of what I found inside.””

The room became silent.

Even Noah stopped moving.

“What did you find?””

Vanessa looked like she was fighting herself.

Then she whispered:

“Pictures.””

My face tightened.

“What kind of pictures?””

“Children.””

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

“Whose children?””

“I don’t know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I don’t know!””

Her voice broke.

“I found old photographs hidden in a box. Pictures of kids I had never seen before. Notes.

Names. Dates.””

I stared at her.

“And you just left it?””

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

“Yes!””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at the floor.

“I thought someone had been living down there.””

The words hung in the air.

I felt Noah move closer.

“Someone?””

Vanessa nodded.

“There were signs.””

“What signs?””

“Food wrappers. Blankets. Toys.””

My heart pounded.

“Someone was using it?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you didn’t call anyone?””

“I was pregnant with Emma.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“I found the room when I was pregnant with her.””

She looked toward the stairs.

“I thought I was imagining things. I thought stress was making me paranoid.””

“And after Emma was born?””

“I locked it.””

Her voice dropped.

“I convinced myself it was over.””

I looked at the floor.

“You convinced yourself?””

“Yes.””

“And now?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Now I think I was wrong.””

Before I could answer, the floor beneath us shook slightly.

Not enough to move anything.

Just enough to feel.

Noah looked down.

“Emma.””

I grabbed the handle.

This time Vanessa didn’t stop me.

The brass key slid into the lock.

It fit perfectly.

That scared me.

Because it meant someone expected it to be opened.

I turned the key.

A click echoed through the laundry room.

The wooden panel lifted slightly.

A smell rose from underneath.

Old wood.

Dust.

And something else.

Something that made Vanessa cover her mouth.

“Vanessa?””

She whispered.

“I remember that smell.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She backed away.

“That’s impossible.””

“What is?””

She stared into the dark gap.

Then said something that made my blood run cold.

“The room was empty when I sealed it.””

I grabbed the edge of the panel and pulled.

A narrow staircase appeared beneath us.

Leading down.

Into darkness.

Noah whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked at him.

“Stay behind me.””

I pulled out my phone and turned on the flashlight.

The beam moved down the stairs.

At the bottom was a small room.

Old wooden walls.

A single chair.

A broken lamp.

And on the ground…

A child’s drawing.

I climbed down slowly.

Each step creaked beneath my weight.

Vanessa stayed at the top.

She wouldn’t come closer.

“Daniel.””

I looked back.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“Don’t touch anything.””

“Why?””

She stared at the room.

“Because if someone has been down there…”

She swallowed.

“…they might still be.””

I reached the bottom.

The room was colder than upstairs.

The walls were covered with scratches.

Not random marks.

Lines.

Like someone had been counting.

I moved the flashlight across the floor.

Then I saw it.

A small pink hair clip.

Emma’s favorite one.

My heart stopped.

“She was here.””

Behind me, Vanessa started crying.

I picked up the hair clip.

Then something caught my eye.

A piece of paper underneath the chair.

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was messy.

Childlike.

But I recognized it immediately.

Emma’s handwriting.

Only five years old.

Only able to write a few words.

The note said:

*DAD, DON’T TRUST MOM.*

My breath stopped.

Then, from the far corner of the room…

something moved.

A quiet scrape.

Like someone dragging a foot across the floor.

I turned the flashlight toward the sound.

And a voice whispered from the darkness:

“Daniel…”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It wasn’t Emma.

It was someone I thought had been gone for years.

Someone who should never have been inside that room.

“Dad?””

Noah’s voice came from the stairs.

“Who are you talking to?””

The shadow moved closer.

And the person stepped into the light.

I dropped the note.

May you like

Because standing in front of me was the one person Vanessa swore could never come back.

My father.
