Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

The letter remained in my hand.

A single piece of paper.

A single sentence.

But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

*ASK YOUR FATHER WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT MICHAEL DISAPPEARED.*

Everyone looked at my father.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

Even Noah, who was standing silently near the hallway.

Nobody needed to say anything.

The question was already there.

Waiting.

I folded the paper slowly.

Then placed it on the table.

“Dad.””

My father didn’t look at me.

That hurt more than if he had yelled.

“Look at me.””

He stayed still.

“Please.””

The word sounded strange coming from me.

Because I wasn’t asking him as a child anymore.

I was asking him as a father.

As someone who needed the truth.

Finally, he lifted his eyes.

And I saw it.

Regret.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Regret.

“What happened to Michael?””

My father closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then he whispered:

“He found out before I did.””

“Found out what?””

“The truth about your grandfather.””

I shook my head.

“You already told me that.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at my mother.

She nodded slowly.

Like she already knew what was coming.

My father took a breath.

“Michael wasn’t just looking for evidence.””

“What was he looking for?””

“He was looking for someone.””

“Who?””

My father looked at me.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

I turned toward her.

My mother looked down.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew Michael was trying to find me.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought I was alive.””

I stared.

“And he was right.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The hidden rooms.

The necklace.

The photograph.

Michael’s disappearance.

My entire childhood.

A story everyone knew except me.

“What happened that night?””

My father looked at the floor.

“The night Michael disappeared…”

He stopped.

His voice became quieter.

“He called me.””

I waited.

“He said he found your mother.””

My heart tightened.

“Where?””

“Here.””

I looked around.

“The house?””

My father nodded.

“He told me he found a hidden room behind the old basement wall.””

My eyes moved toward the sealed entrance.

“He was down there?””

“Yes.””

“And you went after him?””

“I tried.””

The words caught my attention.

“Tried?””

My father looked at Marcus.

The room changed.

Because Marcus looked away.

I noticed.

“What is that?””

My father didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He swallowed.

“I wasn’t alone.””

I turned toward Marcus.

“You were there?””

Marcus remained silent.

My anger rose.

“You were there the night my brother disappeared?””

Marcus finally looked at me.

“Yes.””

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””

I laughed.

“That’s everyone’s excuse.””

Marcus accepted the anger.

Maybe because he deserved it.

“What happened?””

He looked at my father.

Then back at me.

“Your brother found something.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

My mother’s expression changed.

“What recording?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I never heard the whole thing.””

My father’s face tightened.

“But Michael did.””

“What was on it?””

My father answered.

“Your grandfather talking.””

My stomach turned.

“About what?””

My father looked toward the hidden basement.

“About what he planned to do with the family.””

Silence.

“What does that mean?””

My father’s voice dropped.

“He knew Michael found the evidence.””

“And?””

“He wanted it back.””

I felt a chill.

“My grandfather tried to stop him?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother whispered:

“He used someone else.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Her eyes moved toward Marcus.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

My father stepped forward.

“He manipulated people.””

“Who?””

My father looked at me.

“Me.””

The room froze.

I stared.

“What?””

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your grandfather knew I would do anything to protect my family.””

My breathing slowed.

“And he used that.””

The words barely came out.

“What did you do?””

My father looked broken.

“I followed Michael.””

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather told me Michael was putting you in danger.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You believed him?””

“I was young.””

“No.””

My voice became sharp.

“You were my father.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“What happened?””

My father looked away.

“I found Michael in the basement.””

“And?””

“He was scared.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he say?””

My father’s eyes filled.

“He said he knew the truth.””

“About what?””

“He said our family wasn’t broken because of accidents.””

He swallowed.

“He said it was broken because people kept choosing secrets over each other.””

The words hit me.

Because they were true.

“What happened next?””

My father’s voice became barely audible.

“I tried to take him out of the house.””

“Then?””

“Someone came.””

“Who?””

He looked at Marcus.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I was too late.””

My father continued.

“There was a struggle.””

My heart pounded.

“Between who?””

“Michael and the person who was trying to stop him.””

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

Then my mother spoke.

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“But he was dead.””

“He wasn’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

My mother took a breath.

“He disappeared before anyone knew.””

My mind struggled.

“How?””

She looked at the letter.

“He had help.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Maria…”

She looked at him.

“It’s time.””

I looked between them.

“What are you saying?””

My mother’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Your grandfather wasn’t the mastermind.””

The room went completely still.

“Then who was?””

She looked at me.

“The person who inherited everything.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My mother stepped closer.

“Your grandfather created the system.””

“System?””

“The secrets. The hidden rooms. The people he controlled.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“But someone younger continued it.””

I felt a cold feeling in my chest.

“No.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

I turned slowly.

Everyone followed my gaze.

To Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

My heart sank.

Because I didn’t want to believe it.

But suddenly every memory looked different.

The locked doors.

The excuses.

The way she knew things she shouldn’t.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“Daniel, listen.””

My mother’s voice was quiet.

“Your grandfather left everything to the person he trusted most.””

My eyes stayed on Vanessa.

“My ex-wife?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I can explain.””

The words.

The same words everyone used.

I stepped away.

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“I never wanted this.””

“Then why did you know about the rooms?””

“Because I was trying to fix it.””

“By hiding it?””

“I was scared.””

I laughed softly.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You weren’t scared.””

I looked at her.

“You were protecting something.””

Vanessa’s tears fell.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I was protecting you.””

I stared.

“From what?””

She looked toward the basement.

Then at my father.

Then at my mother.

And finally at me.

“From the truth about Michael.””

My heart stopped.

“What about him?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Michael didn’t disappear.””

Nobody moved.

“He escaped.””

The room went silent.

I could barely speak.

“Where is he?””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

The address.

The message.

Then back at me.

“He’s been closer than you think.””

A notification suddenly appeared on my phone.

Unknown number.

One message.

No words.

Just a photograph.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

It was a live image.

Taken moments ago.

Of this house.

Through the front window.

Everyone standing inside.

Everyone visible.

And in the reflection of the glass…

a man was standing behind me.

A man I had never seen.

But he looked exactly like the child in the old photograph.

Michael.

Another message appeared.

*COME OUTSIDE, LITTLE BROTHER.*

I slowly turned around.

May you like

The front door was already open.

And someone was standing on the porch.
