Chapter 5: The Voice Behind the Door
The voice came from the darkness.
Calm.
Familiar.
Impossible.
“You finally came back, Daniel.””
Every muscle in my body locked.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it in childhood memories.
In old arguments.
In dreams I never wanted to remember.
My father.
But my father was standing beside me.
So who was speaking from the room?
I turned slowly.
My father’s face had lost all color.
Vanessa covered her mouth with both hands.
And that reaction told me everything.
They both knew.
They both understood.
“Who is that?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
The hidden door opened another inch.
A cold draft moved through the basement.
Then Emma cried again.
“Dad, please.””
That was enough.
I didn’t care about the secrets anymore.
I didn’t care about the lies.
My daughter was behind that door.
I pushed it open.
“Daniel, wait!””
My father grabbed my arm.
I pulled away.
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“No more waiting.””
I stepped through.
The room beyond was smaller than I expected.
A narrow space hidden between the walls of the house.
Not a basement.
Not storage.
Something else.
The walls were covered with old shelves.
Boxes.
Folders.
Photographs.
A small mattress sat in the corner.
And sitting on it…
was Emma.
Her face was wet with tears.
Her pink pajamas were covered in dust.
But she was alive.
“Dad!””
She ran toward me.
I dropped to my knees and caught her.
I held her so tightly she started crying harder.
“I’m here.””
I pressed my hand against the back of her head.
“I’m here, baby.””
She buried her face into my shoulder.
“I knew you would come.””
My eyes closed.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
Not the basement.
Not the secrets.
Not the people standing behind me.
Just my daughter.
Then I noticed something.
She wasn’t alone.
There was someone else in the room.
A man sat in the far corner.
His hands were resting on his knees.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
He looked older than my father.
Older than anyone who should have been in this house.
He smiled slightly.
“Hello, Daniel.””
I stood up slowly.
Keeping Emma behind me.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at my father.
Then smiled.
“Your father never told you?””
My father stepped forward.
“Stay away from him.””
The man laughed quietly.
“Still protecting him?””
My eyes moved between them.
“What is going on?””
The man leaned forward.
“You deserve to know the truth.””
My father’s voice hardened.
“Don’t listen to him.””
“Why?””
I looked at my father.
“Because every time someone tells me not to listen, it’s because they’re hiding something.””
Nobody spoke.
The older man smiled.
“There he is.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you’re finally asking the right questions.””
I tightened my grip on Emma’s hand.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at me.
“My name is Marcus.””
The name meant nothing.
But my father reacted.
A small movement.
A flicker of anger.
“You know him,” I said.
My father didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
He looked away.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because even after everything, some part of me still wanted him to be honest.
Marcus stood.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he knew everyone in the room was afraid of what he might do.
“I was your father’s partner.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Partner in what?””
Marcus smiled.
“That depends on who you ask.””
My father stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Marcus ignored him.
“Your father believed your grandfather was hiding something.””
I looked at my father.
“Is that true?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you investigated?””
“Yes.””
“What did you find?””
My father looked at Emma.
Then at the walls.
Then finally at me.
“Children.””
The word landed heavily.
“Children?””
“Missing children.””
The room became silent.
I felt Emma hold my hand tighter.
Marcus continued.
“Your grandfather used this place.””
My stomach twisted.
“For what?””
My father answered quietly.
“To hide people.””
The words didn’t feel real.
I looked around the room.
The mattress.
The shelves.
The old drawings.
The scratches on the wall.
“How many?””
My father shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus smiled.
“That’s because he stopped counting.””
I turned toward him.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your grandfather wasn’t alone.””
The silence after that was unbearable.
Vanessa stepped into the room.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“Still protecting the family?””
She froze.
“What does that mean?””
He smiled.
“You know exactly what it means.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is he talking about?””
She looked away.
Again.
Another secret.
I felt something inside me break.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew something.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
She whispered:
“Enough.””
The word hurt.
Because it confirmed what I already knew.
Everyone had known.
Everyone except me.
Emma pulled my sleeve.
“Dad.””
I looked down.
“Why did she put me here?””
The question was so quiet I almost didn’t hear it.
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Her face collapsed.
“Emma…”
My daughter stepped behind me.
“She said I was lying.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you locked me away.””
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
“From who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus spoke.
“From me.””
Everyone looked at him.
The room changed.
The air felt heavier.
My father moved instantly.
“Don’t believe him.””
Marcus smiled.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You still think you’re the hero.””
My father’s face tightened.
“I know what you are.””
“Do you?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Ask him why he disappeared.””
I looked at my father.
The question had been sitting inside me for years.
Waiting.
“Why?””
My father didn’t answer.
“Why did you leave me?””
His eyes lowered.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
“Everyone says that.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
He looked at Marcus.
“From the truth.””
I laughed bitterly.
“The truth is that you abandoned your son?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“The truth is that someone was watching our family.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
My father looked toward the hidden room.
Then at Marcus.
“Your grandfather.””
I shook my head.
“He’s dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could he be watching?””
My father didn’t respond.
Marcus did.
“Because some people leave things behind.””
A chill ran through me.
“What things?””
Marcus looked toward the corner.
At an old wooden box.
“The things that make sure their secrets survive.””
My father stepped toward it.
“No.””
Marcus smiled.
“Too late.””
The box suddenly moved.
Not by itself.
Someone pushed it.
From behind.
Everyone froze.
There was another space hidden behind it.
Another opening.
Another room.
My heart sank.
“How many rooms are there?””
My father whispered:
“I don’t know.””
From the darkness behind the box came a sound.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked at each other.
Then Emma grabbed my hand.
“Dad…”
Her voice trembled.
“That’s not my phone.””
The ringing continued.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then stopped.
A few seconds later, a message notification echoed from inside the hidden space.
My father walked toward it.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He picked up the phone.
The screen lit up.
And his face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He turned the phone toward me.
There was one new message.
One sentence.
