Chapter 3: The Woman Who Wanted Silence
The sound of the chapel doors closing echoed through the room.
Everyone turned.
Nia felt her body tense.
The funeral had stopped being a goodbye.
It had become something else.
Something dangerous.
Marcus Reed still held the burned red folder.
Veronica stood several feet away from him, frozen between anger and panic.
Maya whispered,
“Nia… what is happening?””
Nia didn’t know.
But she knew one thing.
Her father had been trying to tell them something.
And someone had been trying to stop him.
A woman near the back row slowly stood.
Everyone watched as she walked forward.
She was older, dressed simply, holding a small black purse against her chest.
Veronica stared at her.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The woman stopped.
“I was invited.””
Nia looked at Marcus.
“Who is she?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation worried Nia more than the answer.
“Her name is Elaine Brooks,” Marcus said.
Veronica’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Elaine looked toward the coffin.
“Arthur deserved the truth to come out.””
Veronica’s voice sharpened.
“You don’t know anything.””
Elaine looked directly at her.
“I know what happened the night Arthur called me.””
The chapel became silent.
Nia felt a chill.
“What night?”” she asked.
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Elaine looked at Nia.
“Your father was scared.””
Veronica interrupted.
“That’s enough.””
Nia turned toward Veronica.
“No. It isn’t.””
Her voice surprised even herself.
For years, she had been the daughter who stayed quiet.
The daughter who avoided conflict.
The daughter who believed keeping peace was the same as keeping a family together.
Not anymore.
“What happened to my father?””
Veronica stared at her.
Then she smiled faintly.
“You really think Marcus and a stranger know your father better than I did?””
Nia looked at the coffin.
Then back at Veronica.
“I think my father was trying to warn us.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Arthur left instructions.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He wanted the folder opened only after all of his daughters were present.””
Nia frowned.
“All of his daughters?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Maya looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Before Marcus could answer, his phone vibrated.
The sound cut through the room.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Nia noticed.
“What is it?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He stared at the message.
Then slowly turned the phone around.
On the screen was a single sentence.
*Do not open the folder unless you want to learn why Arthur was afraid of his own family.*
Maya covered her mouth.
Veronica looked away.
Too quickly.
Nia saw it.
“You know who sent that.””
Veronica said nothing.
Marcus locked his phone.
“The message came from an unknown number.””
Elaine stepped closer.
“Arthur knew this day would come.””
Nia looked at her.
“What day?””
Elaine glanced at the red folder.
“The day someone would try to take everything he built.””
Veronica suddenly laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“You all think you’re heroes.””
She looked at Nia.
“You have no idea what your father was really like.””
Nia felt the words hit harder than she expected.
Because part of her feared they might be true.
People were complicated.
Families were complicated.
And sometimes the people who loved you could still hide things from you.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Nia, before we continue, I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
He looked at the folder.
“This folder is not just about money.””
The room went still.
“What is it about?”” Maya asked.
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because before he could, Veronica moved.
She crossed the space between them in seconds.
“Don’t open that!””
Her voice was no longer controlled.
No longer elegant.
It was desperation.
Nia stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Veronica looked at her.
For the first time, Nia saw the woman she had been hiding.
Not a confident widow.
Not a grieving wife.
Someone terrified of what was inside that folder.
Marcus held the burned red folder tightly.
The entire chapel waited.
But he did not open it.
May you like
Not yet.
And nobody knew that the secret Arthur left behind was about to destroy the family forever.
