Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Too Much
The stranger stood in the chapel doorway.
Nobody recognized him.
He was a Black man in his early sixties, wearing a dark coat despite the warm room.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
Nia immediately stepped closer to Maya.
Marcus moved slightly in front of them.
“Who are you?””
The man looked around the chapel.
At the coffin.
At the red folder.
Then at Veronica.
“You didn’t tell them I was coming.””
Veronica’s face changed.
“I didn’t know you would.””
That answer was enough.
Nia looked at her.
“You know him.””
Veronica didn’t respond.
The man smiled faintly.
“Everyone knows someone in this family.””
Marcus remained firm.
“Name.””
The man looked at him.
“Calvin Carter.””
Nia froze.
Carter.
The name hit her strangely.
“Are you related to my father?””
Calvin looked at her.
“Yes.””
Maya whispered,
“How?””
He looked toward Arthur’s coffin.
“Because Arthur was my brother.””
The room exploded with silence.
Nia stared.
“My father didn’t have a brother.””
Calvin smiled sadly.
“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.””
Another secret.
Another hidden piece of Arthur’s life.
Nia felt exhausted.
“How many things did my father hide?””
Calvin looked at her.
“Enough to get himself killed.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Careful.””
Calvin looked at him.
“Why? Because the truth is uncomfortable?””
“Because you just made an accusation.””
Calvin walked slowly into the chapel.
“I knew Arthur better than any of you.””
Veronica looked at him.
“You disappeared.””
Calvin turned.
“You told him to remove me.””
The accusation hung in the air.
Nia looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Calvin laughed quietly.
“Your father built an empire and then erased everyone who helped him build it.””
Elaine looked down.
Veronica looked angry.
Marcus looked confused.
Nia looked at the red folder.
“Is that what’s inside?””
Calvin looked at the folder.
“Partly.””
Marcus immediately tightened his grip.
“You know what’s inside?””
Calvin smiled.
“I know enough.””
Nia stepped forward.
“Then tell me.””
Calvin looked at her.
“Your father was trying to fix a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Calvin looked toward Veronica.
“The mistake of trusting the wrong person.””
Veronica’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
Calvin ignored her.
“Arthur discovered someone had been moving money. Changing documents. Creating a new future where his daughters would have nothing.””
Nia looked at Veronica.
Maya whispered,
“No…”
Veronica shook her head.
“You’re lying.””
Calvin looked at her.
“Am I?””
He reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he pulled out a small envelope.
He placed it on the nearest chair.
“This is why Arthur called me.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“What is it?””
Calvin didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Nia.
“Your father wanted you to have this.””
Nia stared.
“Why didn’t he give it to me himself?””
Calvin’s expression changed.
“Because he was afraid he wouldn’t get the chance.””
The words hurt.
Because they sounded true.
Marcus picked up the envelope.
He examined it.
“No name.””
Calvin nodded.
“Arthur didn’t trust names anymore.””
Nia looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Calvin looked around the chapel.
“It means he knew someone close to him was watching.””
The memorial screen flickered again.
Everyone turned.
Another message appeared.
Not a video.
Not a recording.
Just words.
*Stop looking for the person who betrayed Arthur. Look for the person who benefits from his death.*
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then everyone slowly turned.
Toward the same place.
The coffin.
The inheritance.
The estate.
The person who had announced ownership before the funeral was even finished.
Veronica.
She looked around.
And for the first time…
She looked completely alone.
Then Marcus opened the envelope Calvin brought.
Inside was a single document.
His eyes widened.
“Nia…”
She stepped closer.
“What?””
Marcus looked at her.
“This document has your father’s signature.””
He turned the paper around.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
