The Burned Red Folder / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Envelope

The chapel remained frozen.

Marcus Reed stood in the center aisle, holding the burned red folder like it weighed more than paper.

No one looked at the coffin anymore.

No one looked at the flowers.

Everyone was watching the folder.

The thing Arthur had protected until his final days.

Nia could hear her own breathing.

She looked at Veronica.

The woman who had walked into the funeral believing she controlled the entire room was now standing with trembling hands.

“Marcus,” Veronica said quietly, “you need to stop this.””

Marcus didn’t move.

“Why?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Because Arthur wasn’t thinking clearly.””

Nia immediately noticed something.

Veronica had used that excuse before.

Every time Arthur disagreed with her.

Every time he changed his mind.

Every time he tried to spend time alone with his daughters.

“He wasn’t himself,” Veronica continued.

“You know that, Marcus.””

Marcus looked at her calmly.

“I knew Arthur for twenty years.””

He lifted the folder slightly.

“And I knew exactly who he was when he gave me this.””

The room became quiet again.

Nia stepped closer.

“You said Dad gave you that before he died.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

Marcus looked down.

“The night before he passed away.””

Maya’s face changed.

“The night before?””

Veronica immediately interrupted.

“That’s impossible.””

Everyone looked at her.

She realized too late that she had answered too quickly.

Nia stared.

“Why is that impossible?””

Veronica swallowed.

“I mean… because Arthur was already resting.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“No. He was not.””

A silence followed.

Nia felt something inside her break.

For months, Veronica had been the person giving them information.

She had been the person saying what happened.

And they had believed her.

Because why wouldn’t they?

She was his wife.

But now every word felt different.

Marcus opened his briefcase again.

He removed a smaller white envelope.

“This was attached to the folder.””

Nia looked at it.

“What does it say?””

Marcus held it up.

“Arthur wrote instructions.””

Veronica stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

He ignored her.

“‘Do not open the red folder until my daughters are present. Do not allow Veronica to remove it. Do not trust anyone who tells you this is about money.’”

The words hit the room like a storm.

Maya looked at Veronica.

“You knew.””

Veronica shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice lacked confidence.

Nia stared at the envelope.

“Why would Dad write your name?””

Veronica’s expression hardened.

“Because he was confused.””

“No,” Nia said.

Her voice was calm.

That scared Veronica more.

“Because he was afraid.””

The two women stared at each other.

For the first time, Veronica looked at Nia differently.

Not like a grieving daughter.

Like an obstacle.

Marcus carefully turned the envelope over.

“There is one more thing.””

“What?”” Nia asked.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Arthur included a name.””

Everyone waited.

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

He unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he stopped.

Nia noticed.

“What?””

Marcus looked up.

“The name written here is not Veronica’s.””

Maya frowned.

“Then whose is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Because the name was clearly unexpected.

Finally, he said:

“Elaine Brooks.””

Everyone turned.

Elaine stood near the back of the chapel.

Her face went pale.

Veronica looked at her with anger.

“You.””

Elaine didn’t respond.

Nia looked between them.

“What does she have to do with my father?””

Elaine closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she slowly walked forward.

“I knew this moment would come.””

Veronica laughed bitterly.

“You always wanted this.””

Elaine stopped.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I wanted Arthur to tell the truth himself.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

“Who is she?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“She was Arthur’s business partner before Veronica entered his life.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

Business partner?

Her father had never mentioned her.

Not once.

Elaine looked at Nia.

“Your father didn’t tell you because he thought he was protecting you.””

“Protecting me from what?””

Elaine glanced at Veronica.

The answer seemed obvious.

But she didn’t say it.

Not yet.

Instead, she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a photograph.

A small, old photograph.

And handed it to Marcus.

Marcus looked at it.

Then his expression changed.

Nia stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Marcus turned the photograph around.

Nia saw herself.

No.

Not herself.

A younger version of her father.

Standing beside Elaine.

And between them…

Was a child.

A child Nia had never seen before.

Maya whispered,

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Veronica spoke.

Her voice was almost a warning.

“Don’t ask questions you’re not ready to hear the answers to.””

Nia looked at her.

“Why?””

Veronica looked toward the red folder.

“Because your father wasn’t hiding something from me.””

May you like

She paused.

“He was hiding something from you.””
