Chapter 5: The Voice From The Past
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
The sound echoed through the small office, each vibration feeling louder than the last.
Emily stared at the screen like she was looking at a ghost.
Michael noticed the fear in her eyes.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Answer it,” he said.
Emily looked at him.
“What?””
“Answer it.””
Her hand tightened around the phone.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Michael replied.
“I don’t.””
His voice was controlled, but his anger was barely hidden.
“And that’s because for eight years, nobody told me anything.””
The phone continued ringing.
Rebecca looked at Emily.
“Who is it?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Grace watched her carefully.
The little girl who had spent her entire life reading adults’ emotions understood one thing immediately.
Emily was afraid.
Finally, the ringing stopped.
The silence afterward felt worse.
Emily looked down at the screen.
A missed call.
Then another notification appeared.
A message.
She opened it.
Her face changed instantly.
Rebecca noticed.
“What does it say?””
Emily didn’t respond.
Michael stepped closer.
“Emily.””
She slowly turned the phone toward them.
One sentence appeared.
*I know where Grace is.*
Rebecca felt the air leave her lungs.
Michael grabbed the phone.
“When was this sent?””
“Thirty seconds ago.””
“Who sent it?””
Emily looked at him.
“You already know.””
Michael stared.
“No.””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Rebecca looked between them.
“Who?””
Emily whispered the name.
“Daniel.””
Rebecca froze.
The name was familiar.
Too familiar.
Michael’s expression changed.
Because Daniel wasn’t just a stranger.
Daniel was Michael’s closest friend from college.
The man who stood beside him at his wedding.
The man who helped them move into their first house.
The man who visited them in the hospital after Grace was born.
The man who held baby Grace and smiled.
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
Emily nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Rebecca stepped backward.
“That’s impossible.””
Emily looked at her.
“I wish it was.””
Michael stared at the phone.
His memories rearranged themselves.
Every conversation.
Every visit.
Every moment Daniel had been around Grace.
“No,” he whispered.
Emily’s voice was quiet.
“He was involved from the beginning.””
Michael looked up sharply.
“What does that mean?””
Emily took a deep breath.
“It means Daniel knew about Grace before she was born.””
Rebecca’s face went pale.
“How?””
Emily looked at the document on the desk.
“The report you just saw.””
Michael picked it up again.
The words suddenly looked different.
A family security report.
Medical information.
Schedules.
Private details.
Things only someone close could know.
Rebecca’s hands shook.
“He had access.””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
The room filled with a terrible realization.
The person they trusted had been watching them.
Not protecting them.
Studying them.
Grace looked confused.
“Who is Daniel?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Rebecca looked at her.
“He was someone we trusted.””
Grace lowered her eyes.
“Like the woman who gave me the necklace?””
The question hurt.
Because it was exactly right.
Trust had become something dangerous.
Michael walked toward the window.
His reflection stared back at him.
For years, he had blamed himself.
He had replayed the night Grace disappeared thousands of times.
What if he had stayed home?
What if he had checked the car?
What if he had noticed something?
But now he was realizing something worse.
The person who hurt them had been invited inside.
Emily stood.
“I need to explain everything.””
Michael turned.
“Then explain.””
Emily nodded.
“The night Grace disappeared, Daniel called me.””
Rebecca looked confused.
“Why would he call you?””
“Because he knew I would help.””
Michael frowned.
“Help with what?””
Emily looked at Grace.
“Saving her.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“You still keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why didn’t you tell us?””
Emily’s eyes filled.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
The room went quiet.
Michael’s expression changed.
“What did he say?””
Emily looked down.
“He told me if I went to the police, Grace would disappear forever.””
Rebecca covered her mouth.
“And you believed him?””
Emily nodded.
“He showed me proof.””
“What proof?””
Emily reached into her bag.
She pulled out another envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
She handed it to Michael.
He looked at it.
Then his face changed.
Rebecca moved closer.
“What is it?””
Michael handed it to her.
It was a picture of their house.
Taken from across the street.
The date was printed in the corner.
Three weeks before Grace disappeared.
Rebecca’s stomach turned.
“He was watching us.””
Emily nodded.
“Not just watching.””
She pointed at the picture.
“Look closer.””
Rebecca stared.
At first, she saw only the house.
Then she noticed something.
A car parked across the street.
A dark sedan.
A person sitting inside.
Michael recognized it.
His breathing stopped.
“That’s Daniel’s car.””
Nobody spoke.
Because now the impossible was becoming real.
Daniel wasn’t just involved.
He was there.
Michael turned toward Emily.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
Emily looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of him?””
“Yes.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You let us suffer because you were afraid of one man?””
Emily’s eyes hardened slightly.
“No.””
The word surprised him.
“I was afraid because I knew what he was capable of.””
She pointed toward Grace.
“He didn’t just take her.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“What else did he do?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she answered.
“He erased her.””
The sentence was chilling.
Michael frowned.
“What?””
“Daniel had connections.””
Emily opened the folder.
“He changed records.””
She placed documents on the desk.
“Birth records.””
Another page.
“Medical records.””
Another.
“Search records.””
Rebecca stared.
“He made it look like she never existed.””
Grace quietly touched her necklace.
“Why?””
Emily looked at her.
“Because someone wanted you gone.””
Grace’s eyes filled.
“But why me?””
Nobody had an answer.
Not yet.
Then Emily’s phone rang again.
This time, everyone heard it.
Emily looked at the screen.
Her face went completely white.
Michael noticed.
“What now?””
Emily didn’t speak.
She slowly turned the phone around.
A new message.
A photograph.
Everyone looked.
It was taken moments ago.
Inside the orphanage.
The picture showed Grace standing in the lobby.
Watching them.
Someone had been close enough to take it.
Rebecca grabbed Grace and pulled her behind her instinctively.
Michael moved toward the door.
“Where is he?””
Emily grabbed his arm.
“Michael, wait.””
“No.””
“He wants you angry.””
Michael looked at her.
“He has our daughter.””
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“He had your daughter.””
She pointed at Grace.
“Now he wants you to make a mistake.””
Before Michael could answer, the office lights flickered.
Everyone froze.
The orphanage suddenly felt too quiet.
Then came a sound.
A slow knock.
Three times.
On the office door.
Rebecca held Grace tighter.
Michael stepped in front of them.
“Who is it?””
No answer.
Another knock.
Three times.
Director Harris moved closer.
“I’ll call security.””
But before she could reach the phone, a voice came from the other side.
A voice Michael knew.
A voice that belonged to someone he never thought he would fear.
“Michael.””
His blood ran cold.
Because after eight years…
Daniel was standing on the other side of the door.
And he said the words nobody expected.
“I didn’t take your daughter.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“I saved her from you.””
