Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed

The message stayed on Rebecca’s phone screen.

*Ask your husband what happened the night before Grace disappeared.*

She read it again.

And again.

Like somehow the words would change if she looked long enough.

They didn’t.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Everyone was watching Michael now.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

With questions.

Rebecca slowly lowered the phone.

“Michael.””

He didn’t answer.

That scared her more than anything.

Because Michael always had an answer.

He was the man who stayed calm during emergencies.

The man who solved problems.

The man who told her everything would be okay.

But now he looked like a person standing in front of a door he had spent years trying not to open.

“What happened?”” Rebecca asked.

Michael looked at Grace.

Then at her.

“I need to explain.””

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“I have been waiting eight years for explanations.””

Her voice cracked.

“I waited while everyone else knew pieces of the truth.””

Emily looked down.

Daniel looked away.

Rebecca continued.

“And now I find out my own husband was hiding something too?””

Michael closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was obvious.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

The sentence hit the room.

Because it was true.

Everyone who had hidden something had claimed it was for protection.

For safety.

For love.

But secrets still caused damage.

Michael nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

Rebecca looked surprised.

He rarely admitted fault so quickly.

“I should have told you.””

“Then tell me now.””

A long silence followed.

Finally, Michael sat down.

The strong, controlled man Rebecca knew disappeared for a moment.

And she saw something else.

A man who had been carrying guilt alone.

“Two weeks before Grace disappeared,” he said, “I received a letter.””

Rebecca frowned.

“A letter from who?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered.

“From the company that was investigating him.””

Rebecca turned back.

“What company?””

Michael hesitated.

“A private security firm.””

“Why would a security firm investigate you?””

Michael looked at his hands.

“Because someone accused me of stealing confidential information.””

Rebecca stared.

“What?””

“It wasn’t true.””

“I know that.””

“But the accusation existed.””

He looked up.

“And someone was trying to make it look like I was dangerous.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don’t understand.””

Michael took a breath.

“Before I started my own business, I worked for a technology company.””

Rebecca nodded.

She knew this.

Everyone knew this.

“But what you don’t know,” Michael continued, “is that there was a legal dispute when I left.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it was over.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Was it?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Daniel stepped forward.

“They weren’t investigating Michael because they thought he stole something.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Then why?””

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Because they wanted him to look guilty.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Grace.

“Because Michael was protecting someone.””

Rebecca followed his eyes.

Her heart started racing.

“Who?””

Michael spoke quietly.

“Our daughter.””

The room went silent.

Grace looked at him.

“Me?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

He stood slowly.

“When Grace was born, I discovered someone had accessed our family information.””

Rebecca remembered.

The stolen medical records.

The strange calls.

The feeling that someone was watching.

“I thought it was just a privacy issue,” Michael said.

“But then I found documents.””

Daniel added:

“Documents showing someone planned to take Grace.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“And you?””

Daniel nodded.

“I helped Michael investigate.””

Rebecca stared.

“You two knew?””

Michael shook his head.

“Not everything.””

Daniel continued.

“We thought we were close to finding the person behind it.””

“Who?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“We never found out.””

Rebecca looked frustrated.

“So everyone was hiding things, but nobody actually knew anything?””

Michael looked at her.

“We knew enough to be afraid.””

Rebecca looked at Grace.

The little girl was sitting quietly.

Too quietly.

Michael noticed.

He immediately softened.

“Grace.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry.””

The girl blinked.

“For what?””

Michael swallowed.

“For not finding you sooner.””

Grace looked down.

“You were looking?””

“Yes.””

“Every day?””

Michael nodded.

“Every day.””

She studied his face.

Then she asked:

“Why didn’t you find me?””

Nobody had an answer.

Because that was the question that hurt most.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Because someone was very good at hiding you.””

Grace looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know.””

The room became quiet again.

Then Director Harris, who had been reading the documents, suddenly stopped.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

She held up one page.

“This date.””

Michael walked over.

“What about it?””

Director Harris pointed.

“The night Grace arrived here.””

She looked at Rebecca.

“And the night she disappeared.””

Rebecca stepped closer.

“What?””

“They’re not the same date.””

Everyone froze.

Michael frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Director Harris turned the page.

“Grace was not brought here the same night she disappeared.””

The words shocked everyone.

Rebecca stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Director Harris shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at the records.

“Look.””

Michael read the date.

His face changed.

Rebecca noticed.

“What?””

Michael whispered:

“She was missing for three days.””

Emily nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“You knew?””

Emily looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Rebecca’s voice broke.

“And you never told me?””

Emily looked away.

“I thought knowing would destroy you.””

Rebecca stared.

“Knowing my daughter was alive would have destroyed me?””

Emily cried silently.

“No.””

She whispered.

“Knowing what happened during those three days would have.””

Nobody moved.

Michael looked at her.

“What happened?””

Emily looked toward Daniel.

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Those three days are the reason Grace had to disappear.””

Rebecca felt a chill.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the butterfly pendant.

“Because during those three days, someone taught Grace something.””

Michael frowned.

“She was a baby.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“Then what?””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“The person who had her wasn’t trying to hide her from you.””

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“Then who were they hiding her from?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because the answer was already coming.

The lights in the office suddenly went out.

The room dropped into darkness.

Grace gasped.

Rebecca immediately grabbed her hand.

“Everyone stay calm.””

A few seconds later, emergency lights flickered on.

But Daniel was staring at the hallway.

His face had changed.

“What?””

Michael noticed.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t respond.

He walked quickly toward the door.

On the floor outside the office was a small envelope.

Nobody had seen anyone leave it.

Daniel picked it up.

Michael stopped him.

“Don’t touch it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“It’s for Grace.””

Rebecca’s heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel turned the envelope over.

On the front was written one name.

Not Michael.

Not Rebecca.

Not Daniel.

Grace.

The little girl stared at it.

“I don’t know that handwriting.””

Daniel’s expression became fearful.

“Neither do I.””

Michael looked at him.

“You said you knew who was behind this.””

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the envelope.

“I thought I did.””

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Then who sent it?””

Daniel opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

He looked at it.

And immediately dropped it.

Michael picked it up.

The image showed a hospital room.

A newborn baby.

A woman holding her.

Rebecca’s breath caught.

Because she recognized the room.

She recognized the blanket.

She recognized the tiny butterfly necklace.

It was the night Grace was born.

But there was something wrong.

Something impossible.

In the corner of the photograph was another person.

Someone standing beside the hospital bed.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone who had no reason to be there.

Rebecca whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Michael looked at her.

“Who is it?””

Rebecca couldn’t take her eyes off the picture.

Because the person standing beside their newborn daughter…

was the same person whose name had been written on Grace’s original file.

The person they thought had disappeared eight years ago.

The person Daniel feared.

The person who knew the truth from the beginning.

May you like

Rebecca’s voice barely came out.

“Grace’s biological mother.””
