Chapter 8: The Woman In The Photograph
Nobody spoke.
The photograph rested in Michael’s hand, but it felt like it weighed more than anything he had ever held.
Rebecca couldn’t look away.
The hospital room.
The blanket.
The tiny newborn baby.
The butterfly necklace.
Everything was exactly as she remembered.
Except for one detail.
A woman standing beside the bed.
A woman who shouldn’t have existed.
A woman whose presence changed everything.
“Grace’s biological mother,” Rebecca whispered.
The words sounded impossible.
Michael looked at her.
“Rebecca.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became unsteady.
“No, that can’t be right.””
Daniel stood frozen.
Emily looked down.
Like she had been expecting this moment for years.
Michael noticed.
“You knew.””
Emily didn’t answer.
His voice hardened.
“You knew about this woman.””
Emily looked up.
“I knew she existed.””
Rebecca turned toward her.
“You knew someone else was connected to Grace?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The betrayal hurt more than the mystery.
Rebecca stepped closer.
“Who was she?””
Emily looked at the photograph.
“Her name was Sarah.””
The room went silent.
Grace looked confused.
“Sarah?””
Emily nodded.
“She was the woman who gave you the necklace.””
Grace touched the butterfly pendant.
The same pendant that had started everything.
“She was my mother?””
Nobody knew how to answer.
Because the answer was complicated.
Rebecca knelt beside Grace.
“Sweetheart…”
Grace looked at her.
“Did she love me?””
The question was simple.
But it carried years of longing.
Rebecca looked at the little girl in front of her.
She could have lied.
She could have said yes immediately.
But Grace had already lived through too many lies.
“I think she did.””
Grace studied her.
“You think?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“I think she loved you enough to try to protect you.””
Grace looked down.
“But she left me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the hardest truth.
Even love could leave scars.
Daniel stepped forward.
“There’s something you need to know about Sarah.””
Michael looked at him.
“You knew her?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Rebecca stood.
“You knew everyone.””
Daniel accepted the accusation.
“I did.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to keep Grace alive.””
Michael’s voice turned cold.
“You keep using that excuse.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because it’s the truth.””
“Then prove it.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Sarah wasn’t supposed to be Grace’s mother.””
Everyone froze.
Rebecca frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel took a slow breath.
“Sarah was the woman who gave birth to her.””
He looked at Grace.
“But she wasn’t the person who raised her.””
Rebecca felt confused.
“Then who did?””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“You.””
Michael stared.
“What?””
“You and Rebecca were always her parents.””
The words confused everyone.
Rebecca shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel pointed to the photograph.
“Sarah was part of something bigger.””
“What?””
“A program.””
Michael’s expression changed.
“What kind of program?””
Daniel hesitated.
“A private adoption network.””
Rebecca frowned.
“Adoption?””
Daniel nodded.
“An illegal one.””
The room became silent.
Grace looked at Rebecca.
“Was I adopted?””
Rebecca immediately shook her head.
“No.””
She reached for Grace’s hand.
“You were our daughter from the moment we held you.””
Grace looked at her.
“But she was my birth mother?””
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Grace looked at the photograph again.
“Why didn’t she keep me?””
No one answered.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Of the people controlling the network.””
Michael’s eyes narrowed.
“Who controlled it?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Someone who had access to everything.””
Rebecca’s stomach tightened.
“Someone close.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Emily whispered:
“Sarah found out too late.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“What did she find?””
Emily looked at Grace.
“That children weren’t being placed with families.””
A chill moved through the room.
“They were being used.””
Michael stepped closer.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“Some families were chosen because they had influence.””
Rebecca stared.
“Chosen?””
“Yes.””
“Why us?””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“Because of your position.””
Michael’s face hardened.
“My business?””
“Yes.””
Rebecca looked horrified.
“So Grace was targeted?””
Daniel nodded.
“From before she was born.””
The room went quiet.
Grace held Rebecca’s hand tighter.
Rebecca noticed.
She lowered her voice.
“Why didn’t Sarah tell us?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Because she tried.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
“She left this.””
Rebecca stared.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Emily gave it to me.””
Rebecca turned.
“You had a letter?””
Emily looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know what it said.””
“Didn’t know?””
“I was afraid to open it.””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
Daniel handed the envelope to Rebecca.
“This was meant for you.””
Rebecca took it.
Her hands shook.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
The ink had faded.
But the words were still clear.
Rebecca,
If you are reading this, then I failed to explain everything myself.
Rebecca stopped.
Her eyes filled.
She continued.
I know you will hate me. You should. A mother should never leave her child.
Grace watched her.
Rebecca kept reading.
But I need you to understand something. Grace was never taken from you because you were unfit. She was taken because someone wanted something from your family.
Michael looked away.
The words confirmed what Daniel had said.
Rebecca continued.
The people behind this will do anything to keep their secrets hidden.
A tear fell.
I trusted the wrong person.
Rebecca stopped.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
She looked up.
“There’s a name.””
Everyone moved closer.
Rebecca looked back at the letter.
The handwriting became shaky.
The person who arranged everything was…
The sentence ended there.
The rest of the page was torn away.
Michael cursed quietly.
“Someone removed the rest.””
Daniel nodded.
“Of course they did.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Do you know who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was unusual.
Because Daniel always had answers.
Michael noticed.
“You do.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I have a suspicion.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Grace.
Then at the photograph.
“I think the person who controlled everything is the same person who has been trying to find her.””
A sudden sound came from the hallway.
A child crying.
Everyone turned.
But it wasn’t one of the children.
It was Director Harris.
She was staring at something near the entrance.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Pale.
Holding a small bag.
Everyone froze.
Because they recognized her.
Not from memory.
From the photograph.
Rebecca’s hand flew to her mouth.
Michael stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
The woman looked at Grace.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Grace stared.
“Who are you?””
The woman took one step closer.
Rebecca felt her entire body freeze.
Because she knew the answer before the woman spoke.
The butterfly pendant.
The photograph.
The missing years.
Everything led to this moment.
The woman whispered:
“My name is Sarah.””
Grace stared at her.
May you like
The woman’s voice broke.
“And I’m your mother.””
