Chapter 3: The Secret Daniel Left Behind

The message stayed on my screen.

*ASK COLE WHY DANIEL WAS RUNNING FROM HIM.*

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the traffic.

Not the people walking past us.

Not even Lucy asking what was wrong.

All I could see was that sentence.

A sentence designed to destroy the one thing I had left.

Trust.

I slowly lifted my eyes toward Cole.

He was still staring at the black SUV across the street.

He hadn’t noticed the message yet.

Or maybe he had.

Maybe he was waiting to see if I would believe it.

“Rachel?”” he said.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“Why was Daniel running from you?””

The question landed between us like a weapon.

Cole froze.

The muscles in his jaw tightened.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Lucy looked up at him.

“Did you hurt my daddy?””

Her voice was small.

But the question carried more weight than anything I could have asked.

Cole looked at her.

And something broke in his expression.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

I stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

Cole glanced toward the SUV.

“Not here.””

I almost shouted.

“No. You don’t get to do that again.””

People nearby turned slightly.

I didn’t care.

“You’ve spent five years holding onto information about my husband. You knew things I deserved to know. And now I find out Daniel might have been afraid of you?””

Cole looked down.

“I knew this would happen.””

“What would happen?””

“You would think I was the enemy.””

I laughed.

“Because right now, I don’t know what to think.””

A long silence followed.

Then Cole slowly reached into his vest pocket.

I immediately stepped back.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I’m not reaching for a weapon.””

“Then tell me what you’re reaching for.””

He pulled out an old leather wallet.

Inside was a photograph.

Not a family photograph.

Not a memory.

A photograph of two men standing beside motorcycles.

One was Daniel.

The other was Cole.

But they weren’t smiling.

They looked younger.

And they looked like they had survived something together.

Cole handed it to me.

“Daniel took this eleven years ago.””

I looked at the picture.

“Where?””

“Outside a warehouse.””

“Why were you there?””

Cole hesitated.

“That’s the part I never wanted you to know.””

My stomach tightened.

“Tell me.””

He looked at Lucy.

Then at me.

“Daniel and I used to work security for private companies.””

I frowned.

“Security?””

“Protection. Investigations. Finding people who didn’t want to be found.””

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“You were involved in dangerous things.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

Cole looked away.

“At first, yes.””

The answer made my chest hurt.

The man I knew had been a father.

A husband.

A man who burned pancakes every Sunday because he always got distracted talking to Lucy.

Not someone who chased secrets.

Not someone who lived a hidden life.

“What did he find?”” I asked.

Cole took a breath.

“Five years ago, Daniel discovered that someone inside the company we worked for was selling information.””

“What kind of information?””

“People’s locations. Witnesses. Families.””

The world suddenly felt smaller.

“And he thought Lucy and I were targets?””

“Yes.””

“Because of what he found?””

“Yes.””

I looked back at the message.

*ASK COLE WHY DANIEL WAS RUNNING FROM HIM.*

“Then why would someone say he was running from you?””

Cole didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Cole.””

He rubbed his beard.

“Because Daniel blamed me.””

“For what?””

“For bringing him into that world.””

I stared.

“What?””

Cole looked exhausted.

“Daniel trusted me. I introduced him to people. I convinced him he could use his skills to help others.””

“And?””

“And I was wrong.””

The honesty surprised me.

Cole looked at the ground.

“When Daniel found out what was happening, he wanted to expose everyone involved.””

“But you didn’t?””

“I wanted him to wait.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew what those people were capable of.””

A gust of wind moved through the street.

Lucy held onto my hand.

“So Daddy left because of you?””

Cole looked at her.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Your father left because he was trying to keep you safe.””

Lucy stared at him.

“How do you know?””

Cole swallowed.

“Because he told me.””

I felt my heart stop.

“What did he tell you?””

Cole looked at me.

“The last night I saw him.””

The noise around us disappeared again.

“When was that?””

“The night before he disappeared.””

My breath caught.

The same night.

The same night I remembered Daniel standing in our kitchen.

The same night he hugged me longer than usual.

The same night he whispered, “I love you,” three times before leaving for work.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Cole’s eyes became distant.

“He came to my house.””

“You said he disappeared the next day.””

“He did.””

“Then why didn’t you tell the police?””

Cole looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel asked me not to.””

My anger returned.

“Of course he did.””

Cole accepted the bitterness.

“He told me if anything happened to him, I needed to protect two things.””

“What?””

“His family.””

“And?””

“The evidence.””

I looked at the notebook in my hand.

“This?””

Cole nodded.

“Part of it.””

“Part?””

“There’s more.””

My heart sank.

“Where?””

Before he could answer, the black SUV across the street started moving.

Slowly.

Not leaving.

Circling.

Cole noticed.

His entire body changed.

The relaxed biker disappeared.

The survivor returned.

“We need to go.””

I looked at him.

“Not until you tell me everything.””

“Rachel, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I spent five years thinking my husband abandoned us. Five years wondering if Lucy wasn’t enough for him. If I wasn’t enough.””

Cole’s expression softened.

“He never abandoned you.””

“You don’t know that.””

“I do.””

“How?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because the last thing Daniel said to me was your name.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“He looked me in the eyes and said, ‘If I don’t make it back, tell Rachel I never stopped trying to come home.’”

My eyes burned.

I hated that I believed him.

I hated that after five years, one sentence from a stranger could break open everything I had buried.

Then Lucy spoke.

“Mom.””

I looked down.

She was staring at the notebook.

“There’s something inside.””

She took the notebook from my hand before I could stop her.

A small folded piece of paper slipped out from the back cover.

Cole’s face changed.

“That wasn’t there before.””

I unfolded it.

My hands shook.

This note wasn’t in Daniel’s handwriting.

Someone else had written it.

Only four words.

*HE TRUSTED THE WRONG BROTHER.*

I looked at Cole.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both knew what it meant.

Daniel had trusted someone.

Someone close.

Someone he considered family.

The SUV stopped at the end of the street.

The driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

This time, I saw his face.

And Cole went completely still.

“Impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Cole didn’t answer.

His face had gone pale.

The man across the street looked directly at us.

Then he smiled.

A smile I had seen before.

Not on a stranger.

On someone in Daniel’s old photographs.

Someone standing beside him.

Someone who had been there eleven years ago.

Cole whispered the name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

“Daniel’s brother.””

I stared at the man approaching us.

“But you said Daniel didn’t have a brother.””

Cole’s eyes never left him.

“I said he wasn’t my blood brother.””

The man stopped a few feet away.

He looked at Lucy.

Then at me.

Then smiled.

“Rachel Morgan.””

My entire body froze.

He knew my name.

“I’ve been trying to find you for a long time.””

Cole stepped in front of us.

The man laughed softly.

“Still protecting Daniel’s family?””

Cole’s voice was low.

“Stay away from them.””

The stranger tilted his head.

Then looked directly at me.

“Your husband didn’t disappear, Rachel.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“He was taken.””

The stranger reached into his coat.

Cole moved instantly.

But the man only pulled out a photograph.

He held it toward me.

A photograph of Daniel.

Alive.

Taken recently.

And behind him was a location written in black ink.

The stranger smiled.

“Your husband wants you to know where he is.””

He paused.

“But first, you need to know what Cole did the night Daniel vanished.””

Cole looked away.

And for the first time…

May you like

I wondered if he was afraid because he was protecting us.

Or because he was hiding the truth.
