The Call From The Dead / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Daughter They Wanted

“Lucy was the person they were trying to replace.””

Daniel’s words echoed through the old storage building.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

I held the phone tighter against my ear.

“Daniel…”

My voice broke.

“What does that mean?””

Static filled the line.

For a terrifying second, I thought I had lost him again.

Then his voice returned.

“Rachel, listen carefully.””

I closed my eyes.

Just hearing him was enough to hurt.

Five years of grief had built a wall around my heart.

And one sentence from him was tearing it down.

“You need to get Lucy away from there.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was standing beside me, holding my hand.

Confused.

Scared.

But brave.

“She’s right here.””

Daniel went silent.

Then I heard him breathe.

“Lucy?””

She looked at the phone.

“Daddy?””

The sound that came from Daniel wasn’t something I expected.

It wasn’t fear.

It wasn’t urgency.

It was pain.

A father hearing his daughter’s voice after years apart.

“Lucy…”

His voice shook.

“I’m sorry.””

Lucy’s eyes filled.

“Why did you leave?””

The question was simple.

But it carried five years of waiting.

Five years of birthdays.

Five years of bedtime stories without him.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

And I hated that.

Because even after everything, he still had secrets.

“I didn’t leave you.””

Lucy wiped her face.

“Then where were you?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Trying to make sure you would have a future.””

She looked at me.

I couldn’t tell her if that was enough.

Because I didn’t know either.

“Daddy…”

“Yes?””

“Are you coming home?””

The silence afterward hurt more than any answer.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“I’m trying.””

Trying.

Not promising.

Not saying soon.

Trying.

I looked away.

Because some part of me was still angry.

Still hurt.

Still the woman who had stood at a window every night wondering if she had been abandoned.

I took the phone.

“Daniel.””

“Rachel.””

His voice changed when he said my name.

Like he had been waiting years to say it.

“Tell me everything.””

A pause.

“I can’t explain all of it over the phone.””

“Then explain enough.””

I looked around the room.

At Cole.

At Marcus.

At my mother.

At William.

Everyone who had hidden pieces of my life.

“Because I’m done being protected.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“You’re right.””

The agreement surprised me.

“I should have trusted you.””

Tears burned my eyes.

“Yes.””

“I was wrong.””

Those words hurt.

Because I had wanted to hear them years ago.

Not now.

Not after everything.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Lucy?””

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“Because I didn’t know the full truth.””

“What truth?””

“Rachel…”

His voice became urgent.

“Lucy isn’t connected to this because of who she is.””

I looked at her.

“Then why?””

“Because of what she carries.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

William stepped closer.

His face was pale.

“Daniel.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel heard.

“Is he there?””

My hand tightened.

“Yes.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Put him on.””

I stared at William.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

William looked at me.

“Rachel—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to talk to him after everything.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Rachel, please.””

I froze.

Because Daniel rarely begged.

“Put him on.””

I slowly handed the phone to William.

He took it carefully.

“Daniel.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought you were dead.””

A bitter laugh came from the phone.

“You wanted me to be.””

William closed his eyes.

“I deserved that.””

Nobody spoke.

The old man who had shaped so many lives looked smaller suddenly.

“I made mistakes.””

Daniel’s voice remained cold.

“You destroyed your family.””

“Yes.””

“You hid Rachel’s identity.””

“Yes.””

“You let people believe she was someone else.””

“Yes.””

I watched William.

Waiting for excuses.

None came.

“I was afraid,” he said.

Daniel answered:

“Fear doesn’t excuse what you did.””

William looked down.

“I know.””

The phone went quiet.

Then Daniel asked:

“Where is Rachel?””

William looked at me.

“Here.””

“And Lucy?””

“Here.””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Then you need to listen.””

William handed the phone back.

I pressed it to my ear.

“What?””

Daniel spoke quickly.

“The people who are after Lucy are not trying to hurt her.””

My stomach tightened.

“They want her.””

“Why?””

“Because Lucy has something they need.””

I looked at my daughter.

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“The access code.””

I frowned.

“What access code?””

“The one hidden in her medical records.””

My mother looked away.

And I noticed.

She knew.

“What medical records?””

Daniel sighed.

“Rachel, when Lucy was born, there was a complication.””

I remembered.

The hospital.

The long night.

Doctors rushing.

Daniel holding my hand.

The fear.

“You told me everything was normal.””

“I thought it was.””

My heart sank.

“You thought?””

Daniel’s voice became softer.

“When Lucy was born, someone altered the records.””

“Why?””

“Because they discovered something unusual.””

I looked at Lucy.

She was watching me.

I hated that she was hearing this.

“What unusual thing?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your mother.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She was involved.””

My mother closed her eyes.

I felt anger rising.

Again.

Another secret.

“Mom?””

She didn’t look at me.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother helped hide the truth about Lucy.””

“Why?””

“Because she was trying to protect her.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“Everyone is always protecting someone.””

Daniel was silent.

I knew I had hurt him.

But I needed him to understand.

“I spent five years thinking you chose to leave.””

“Rachel…”

“I raised our daughter believing she wasn’t enough to make you stay.””

His voice broke.

“Never.””

“Then why?””

“Because if they found Lucy, they would use her.””

“Use her for what?””

Daniel’s answer was barely a whisper.

“To unlock something.””

The room became silent.

“What?””

“A database.””

I frowned.

“What database?””

“The one your grandfather created.””

I looked at William.

“My grandfather?””

Daniel continued.

“Your family was connected to a private research project decades ago.””

I stared at him.

“This is insane.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. It’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

The phone crackled.

Then Daniel’s voice became rushed.

“Rachel, listen to me. The person leading this operation is not Marcus.””

Everyone looked at Marcus.

Not Marcus?

“Not Cole.””

Cole looked up.

“Then who?””

Daniel went quiet.

Too quiet.

“Daniel?””

Finally, he spoke.

“The person you need to fear is someone who has been close to Lucy since the day she was born.””

My heart stopped.

I looked around.

Everyone.

My mother.

William.

Cole.

Marcus.

Ethan.

Nobody moved.

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“The person who helped deliver Lucy.””

My blood turned cold.

The hospital.

The birth.

The records.

The secret.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“Rachel, you need to get out of there now.””

A sound interrupted him.

A door closing.

Then voices.

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“Daniel?””

No answer.

“Daniel!””

I heard movement.

Someone shouting.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Rachel…”

The fear in his voice terrified me.

“Don’t let them take Lucy.””

The line went silent.

“Daniel?””

Nothing.

“Daniel!””

Only static.

Then the call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Five years ago, I lost my husband.

Today, I found him.

And minutes later, I lost him again.

But this time, I knew something.

Someone near Lucy had been lying since the day she was born.

My mother suddenly looked toward the entrance.

Her face changed.

“Rachel.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“He’s here.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

She just stared past me.

At the person standing in the doorway.

The person who had been part of Lucy’s life from the beginning.

The person who had held her first.

The person who knew every detail of her birth.

My heart stopped when I recognized the face.

Because I knew them.

I trusted them.

And they were smiling.

“Rachel,” they said softly.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Lucy stepped closer to me.

And the person looked directly at her.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

My entire body went cold.

Because Lucy recognized them.

May you like

And whispered:

“Doctor?””
