Chapter 4: The Night Daniel Vanished
The photograph trembled between my fingers.
I couldn’t look away.
Because the man staring back at me wasn’t a memory.
He wasn’t a picture from five years ago.
He wasn’t the younger version of my husband I kept hidden inside a drawer because looking at it hurt too much.
This was Daniel.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
The photograph showed him standing beside a gray brick building I didn’t recognize. His hair was longer. There were lines around his eyes that hadn’t been there before.
But it was him.
My husband.
The father who promised Lucy he would teach her how to swim.
The man who kissed my forehead every morning.
The person I had mourned for five years.
My knees almost gave out.
“Where is he?””
My voice barely worked.
The stranger across from me didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Cole.
“You never told her.””
Cole’s expression hardened.
“Leave.””
The stranger smiled.
“Still pretending you’re the hero.””
Lucy moved closer to me.
I felt her small hand grab mine.
“Mom…”
I forced myself to breathe.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at me.
“My name is Marcus.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way Cole reacted did.
His shoulders tightened.
His eyes narrowed.
Like hearing that name opened an old wound.
“You know him,” I said.
Cole didn’t respond.
“Cole.””
He finally looked at me.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
Too quiet.
I turned toward Marcus.
“You said Daniel wants me to know where he is.””
Marcus nodded.
“He does.””
“Then take me to him.””
Cole immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No?””
His face changed.
“Rachel, you don’t know who this man is.””
“And you do?””
The question hit him.
He looked away.
Marcus laughed.
“That’s the problem with Cole. He always thinks he can control the story.””
Cole’s voice became colder.
“Enough.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“Not anymore.””
The street suddenly felt dangerous.
Not because anyone was shouting.
Not because anyone was threatening us.
Because everyone seemed to know something except me.
My husband’s disappearance.
Cole’s secrets.
Marcus’s connection to Daniel.
My entire life had become a puzzle, and I was the last person allowed to see the pieces.
I held up the photograph.
“Tell me what happened.””
Nobody moved.
“Now.””
Marcus looked at Cole.
Then back at me.
“Five years ago, Daniel discovered someone was selling information about protected witnesses.””
I already knew that part.
“What I don’t know is why he disappeared.””
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Because he found out who was responsible.””
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Cole.
My stomach tightened.
“No.””
Cole shook his head.
“Rachel—”
“Was it you?””
His face changed.
“Absolutely not.””
“Then why does everyone keep looking at you?””
Cole stepped closer.
“Because I was there.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
“The night Daniel disappeared.””
The world went silent.
I stared at him.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I couldn’t.””
“Couldn’t?””
My voice rose.
“You could have walked into my house at any point during the last five years and told me my husband might still be alive.””
Cole looked destroyed.
“I thought he was dead.””
“But you just said—”
“I said I thought.””
He looked down.
“That night changed everything.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“Tell her.””
Cole ignored him.
“Daniel came to my house around midnight.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What did he say?””
Cole looked at the ground, remembering.
“He said he had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“Proof that someone close to him was involved.””
I looked at Marcus.
The stranger didn’t react.
That frightened me.
“He knew who it was?”” I asked.
Cole nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Cole hesitated.
And that hesitation told me everything.
“You’re protecting someone.””
“No.””
“Then say the name.””
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t know if I can.””
I stepped toward him.
“My daughter spent five years asking where her father was.””
Cole looked at Lucy.
Her eyes were full of questions.
“Tell me.””
Cole closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“Daniel believed the person responsible was someone he trusted.””
Marcus smiled.
“Someone he called family.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Cole’s expression became darker.
“Daniel had a partner.””
“Like you?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“Before me.””
I waited.
Cole took a breath.
“Someone who helped him years ago.””
“Who?””
Cole looked at Marcus.
And Marcus looked back.
The silence was enough.
My heart dropped.
“No.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“You?””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“Daniel was my best friend.””
Cole’s voice was bitter.
“Until he found out what you were doing.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You still believe that?””
“What did you do?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
“I tried to save him.””
Cole laughed once.
A cold, angry sound.
“You trapped him.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Careful.””
“Or what?””
The tension between them was immediate.
Old.
Personal.
Like this argument had been waiting five years to happen.
Lucy squeezed my hand harder.
I knew I had to get her away.
But I needed answers.
“What happened that night?””
Cole looked at me.
“I drove Daniel away from my house.””
“Where?””
“He wanted to meet someone.””
“Who?””
Cole swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus interrupted.
“You know.””
Cole turned sharply.
“Don’t.””
“You know exactly who he was meeting.””
“Stop.””
I looked at Cole.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He didn’t answer.
And that was when I noticed something.
A small scar near his left hand.
A scar I had seen before.
Not on Cole.
On Daniel.
In the photograph from eleven years ago.
They had matching marks.
“What happened to your hand?”” I asked.
Cole looked down.
“Nothing.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
His eyes lifted.
I held up the old photograph.
“You and Daniel had the same scar.””
The color left his face.
Marcus noticed.
“So she finally sees it.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Sees what?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Daniel wasn’t just your husband, Rachel.””
My heart pounded.
“What are you saying?””
“He was part of something much bigger.””
Cole’s voice turned sharp.
“Enough.””
Marcus ignored him.
“He spent years protecting you from the truth.””
“What truth?””
Marcus looked at Lucy.
Then at me.
“Your daughter wasn’t the only reason Daniel stayed away.””
A cold wave moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Before Marcus could answer, a loud engine roared nearby.
Cole turned instantly.
A second motorcycle had appeared at the end of the street.
Then another.
His expression changed.
“We’re leaving.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Now.””
Marcus looked toward the approaching motorcycles.
For the first time, he looked worried.
“Too late.””
The riders stopped.
Three men stepped off.
Not customers.
Not strangers.
People who had come looking for us.
Cole grabbed the notebook from my hand.
“Rachel, listen carefully.””
I pulled away.
“No. I’m done listening without answers.””
He looked directly into my eyes.
And for the first time, I saw fear.
Real fear.
“Daniel wasn’t hiding from you.””
A motorcycle engine roared behind us.
Cole lowered his voice.
“He was hiding you.””
The nearest rider removed his helmet.
Cole froze.
Because he recognized him.
“Impossible…”
I looked at the man.
Then at Cole.
“Who is it?””
Cole’s face went pale.
“The person Daniel trusted after me.””
The rider walked closer.
And when he spoke, his voice made my blood run cold.
“Rachel.””
He smiled.
“Your husband asked me to bring you home.””
Cole grabbed my arm.
“No.””
The man looked at him.
“You should have told her the truth five years ago.””
Then he turned back to me.
“Because Daniel didn’t disappear.””
He paused.
“He escaped.””
The stranger reached into his jacket.
And pulled out a small envelope.
May you like
On the front was written in Daniel’s handwriting.
*FOR RACHEL — OPEN ONLY WHEN YOU KNOW WHO BETRAYED ME.*
