Chapter 2: Sarah

Maya's fingers hovered above the screen.

The phone kept ringing.

*SARAH — MAYA'S MOM*

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Marcus stared at the name as if it had appeared there by magic.

Vanessa stood rigid beside the kitchen island.

“Maya,” she whispered.

Maya looked at her.

“That's my mother's name.””

“I know.””

“You said she was dead.””

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

Marcus slammed his palm onto the marble countertop.

“Answer her.””

Vanessa flinched.

“Marcus, please.””

“You told me Sarah died.””

“I never said—”

“You told me she abandoned Maya.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“I said she left.””

Maya's face crumpled.

“There's a difference?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Then what was the truth?””

The phone stopped ringing.

Silence.

Maya stared at the screen.

The call disappeared.

For half a second, nobody spoke.

Then a message appeared.

*UNKNOWN NUMBER: Maya, it's Mom. Please don't trust Vanessa.*

Maya's hand flew to her mouth.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

“Let me see that.””

Maya let him take it.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew she was alive.””

“No.””

“You just told us you knew.””

“I knew Sarah wasn't dead.””

Maya stared at Vanessa.

“So you lied.””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From my mother?””

“From what she wanted.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What does Sarah want?””

Vanessa looked toward the windows.

“It's complicated.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“No. It's actually very simple.””

He held up the phone.

“My wife has supposedly been dead for fifteen years. Now she's texting my daughter.””

He pointed at Vanessa.

“And you're terrified.””

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

“You don't know what Sarah is capable of.””

“Then tell me.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because you'll hate me.””

Maya whispered,

“I already do.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The words seemed to physically hit her.

Marcus looked at Maya.

“Baby…”

She shook her head.

“Don't call me that.””

He stopped.

Maya wiped her face.

“Not until you tell me everything.””

Marcus looked down at the phone.

Another message appeared.

*SARAH: I have proof. Ask Vanessa about the blue box.*

Maya looked up.

“What blue box?””

Vanessa went pale.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“What blue box?””

Vanessa backed away from the island.

“There isn't one.””

Maya stared at her.

“You're lying again.””

“I am not.””

“Then why did your face change?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Please.””

He didn't move.

“Where is the box?””

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

“I don't know.””

Maya suddenly turned and ran upstairs.

“Maya!”” Marcus shouted.

She didn't stop.

Her footsteps thundered down the hallway.

A bedroom door slammed.

Vanessa whispered,

“She can't find it.””

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Where?””

“In the basement.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“You said there wasn't one.””

“I panicked.””

“You've been lying to me for fifteen years.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to keep this family together.””

Marcus walked toward the basement door.

Maya came running back down the stairs.

She held a small key in her fist.

“I found this in Dad's old desk.””

Marcus stopped.

“What is that?””

Maya held it up.

“A key.””

Vanessa stared at it.

Her lips parted.

“That shouldn't be here.””

Maya looked at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Marcus took the key.

There was a tiny blue tag attached to it.

A single word had been written in faded black ink.

*BOX.*

Marcus looked toward the basement.

Maya followed his gaze.

“Let's go.””

Vanessa grabbed Marcus's arm.

“Don't open it.””

He pulled free.

“Why?””

“Because once you see what's inside, you can't put our family back together.””

Maya's voice shook.

“Maybe it was never together.””

Marcus opened the basement door.

Cold air rolled up the stairs.

The light flickered on.

They descended together.

Vanessa stayed at the top.

“Maya,” she called softly.

Maya turned.

“What?””

Vanessa's eyes were wet.

“If you love your father, don't open that box.””

Maya stared at her.

Then she looked at Marcus.

He was already searching the shelves.

A minute later, he stopped.

Behind an old storage bin sat a small blue metal box.

Exactly as Sarah had described.

Marcus pulled it free.

Dust covered the lid.

Maya's heart hammered.

He inserted the key.

Click.

The lock opened.

Inside was a stack of photographs, a hospital bracelet, several letters—

and one sealed envelope.

Written across the front were four words.

*FOR MAYA, WHEN SHE'S SEVENTEEN.*

Maya stopped breathing.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered,

“No…”

Marcus handed the envelope to Maya.

She stared at her name.

Then she noticed something else.

The handwriting.

She had seen it before.

On the birthday card hidden in her father's desk every year.

Her hands began to shake.

“Dad…”

Marcus looked at her.

Maya turned the envelope over.

A photograph slid from underneath it.

A younger Sarah stood beside a newborn baby.

And beside Sarah was Marcus.

But the date printed on the photograph was impossible.

Maya whispered,

“Mom wasn't gone when I was born.””

Vanessa's voice came from the basement stairs.

“No.””

Maya turned.

Vanessa was crying now.

“She wasn't.””

May you like

Then Marcus opened the sealed envelope.

And the first line inside made him drop it.
