Chapter 3: The Blue Box

Marcus stared at the letter on the basement floor.

Maya crouched beside him.

“What does it say?””

He didn't answer.

“Dad?””

Marcus picked up the paper.

His hands were shaking.

Maya looked over his shoulder.

The first line was written in blue ink.

*Marcus, if Maya is reading this, Vanessa has finally run out of ways to hide me from her.*

Maya's mouth fell open.

She slowly looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa stood halfway down the stairs.

“No,” she whispered.

Marcus looked up.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't know she'd written that.””

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she contacted Maya.””

“No.””

“You knew about this box.””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Yes.””

Marcus stood.

“You lied to me.””

“I was scared.””

“Of Sarah?””

“Of what she'd tell you.””

Maya grabbed the letter.

“Then I'll read it.””

Vanessa rushed down the stairs.

“Maya, don't.””

Maya held the letter against her chest.

“Stay away from me.””

Vanessa stopped.

Marcus stepped between them.

“Maya is going to read it.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus, please. There are things you don't understand.””

“Then let her understand.””

Maya unfolded the paper.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she began reading aloud.

“Marcus, I never abandoned our daughter.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Maya continued.

“I left because I was told Maya would be taken from both of us if I stayed.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Told by who?””

Maya kept reading.

“I believed you were part of it. I was wrong.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Part of what?””

Maya looked farther down.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Marcus looked at her.

“What does it say?””

Maya swallowed.

“It says…”

Her voice trembled.

“‘The person who threatened me had access to Maya's birth records, your finances, and the adoption papers Vanessa prepared without your knowledge.’”

Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“Adoption papers?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I can explain.””

Maya stepped backward.

“You tried to give me away?””

“No!””

“You prepared adoption papers?””

“I never signed them.””

“But you made them.””

Vanessa shook her head desperately.

“I was trying to make sure you stayed safe.””

“By giving me to somebody else?””

“No!””

Marcus's voice thundered through the basement.

“Enough!””

Everyone fell silent.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Who was going to take my daughter?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa whispered a name.

Maya couldn't hear it.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Your mother's sister.””

Maya blinked.

“I don't have an aunt.””

“You do.””

“Why have I never met her?””

Vanessa's eyes dropped.

“Because she disappeared.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Disappeared where?””

“I don't know.””

Maya looked back at the letter.

There was another paragraph.

She read it silently.

Her expression changed.

“Dad…”

“What?””

Maya handed him the page.

“Read this.””

Marcus took it.

His eyes moved across the final lines.

His face went completely still.

“What?””

Maya asked.

Marcus didn't respond.

She snatched the letter back.

The sentence was underlined.

*If Vanessa tells you Sarah is dangerous, ask her why she received money every month from the account opened in my name.*

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“Did you?””

Vanessa was crying.

“It's not what you think.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

Marcus's voice was quiet now.

“How much?””

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

“Enough to keep Sarah away.””

Maya stared at her.

“You paid my mother to disappear?””

“No.””

“Then what did you pay her for?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“She wasn't the one receiving the money.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Who was?””

Vanessa looked toward the basement wall.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely terrified.

“I don't know.””

Maya's phone suddenly buzzed upstairs.

Everyone froze.

A second buzz followed.

Then a third.

Maya ran up the stairs.

Marcus followed.

Vanessa stayed behind for one heartbeat before rushing after them.

Maya reached the kitchen.

Her phone was on the marble island.

The screen showed three new messages.

*SARAH: I'm outside.*

Maya's heart stopped.

Another message appeared.

*SARAH: Don't let Vanessa see me.*

Maya looked toward the kitchen window.

Across the street, a dark SUV sat beneath a maple tree.

The driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Even from a distance, Maya recognized the face.

The same face from the photograph in the blue box.

Her mother.

Maya moved toward the front door.

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

“Don't.””

Maya spun around.

“Let me go.””

“You don't know her.””

“You don't know me.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Vanessa, take your hand off my daughter.””

Vanessa released Maya.

Then the doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

The bell rang again.

Maya stared at the door.

Marcus reached for the handle.

Vanessa whispered,

“If you open that door, she won't just tell you what happened.””

Marcus stopped.

“What won't she tell me?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“She'll tell you who your real father is.””

The doorbell rang a third time.

May you like

Maya's face went white.

And Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.
