Chapter 5: The Name on the Certificate

Marcus didn't open the door.

He stared at it as if the wood itself had become a threat.

Maya stood beside Sarah.

Vanessa had backed toward the kitchen counter.

The man's voice came again.

“Marcus, it's Daniel.””

Marcus's face went pale.

Maya looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn't respond.

Sarah whispered,

“You know him.””

Marcus finally nodded.

“Daniel was my best friend.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Sarah looked at her.

“And the man who helped you.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa's eyes opened.

“Sarah—”

“No more.””

Sarah pointed toward the door.

“He helped change the records.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa whispered,

“It wasn't supposed to go this far.””

Marcus opened the door.

Daniel stood on the porch.

Early forties.

Black American.

Gray beginning at his temples.

Navy jacket.

His expression was calm until he saw Sarah.

Then all the color drained from his face.

“You.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What did you do?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus grabbed the front of his jacket.

“What did you do to my family?””

Daniel raised his hands.

“Marcus, listen.””

“No.””

Marcus shoved him backward.

“You have ten seconds.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“She didn't tell you?””

Marcus's voice became colder.

“Tell me what?””

Daniel sighed.

“The certificate was real.””

Maya's heart pounded.

“What certificate?””

Daniel looked at her.

“The original birth certificate.””

Marcus turned toward the kitchen.

The flash drive was still sitting on the marble island.

He grabbed it.

“You changed my daughter's records.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I changed one thing.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“You changed everything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Sarah's expression hardened.

“Don't pretend this was noble.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Who is Maya's father?””

Daniel's eyes moved toward Maya.

Then toward Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered,

“Daniel.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus's face changed.

“You?””

Maya stepped backward.

Sarah closed her eyes.

Daniel whispered,

“I never wanted you to find out like this.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Vanessa.

“You had a child with him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Not with Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

Maya stared at him.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked at Sarah.

Sarah's face was wet with tears.

“Me.””

Maya blinked.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I am not your father.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Then stop playing games.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was the man Vanessa used to make you believe the records were complicated.””

Maya's breathing quickened.

Sarah took her hand.

“Come here.””

Maya pulled away.

“No.””

Sarah stopped.

Maya's eyes filled.

“Everyone keeps saying things about me like I'm not standing here.””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Maya—”

“No!””

She backed away.

“I want one answer.””

She looked directly at Sarah.

“Who is my father?””

Sarah couldn't speak.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered,

“Tell her.””

Sarah shook her head.

“You tell her.””

Vanessa's eyes closed.

Marcus stepped between them.

“Enough.””

He inserted the flash drive into the laptop on the kitchen counter.

A folder opened.

Dozens of files appeared.

Medical records.

Bank statements.

Scanned letters.

Photographs.

And one file:

*MAYA_JOHNSON_BIRTH_CERTIFICATE_ORIGINAL.pdf*

Marcus clicked it.

The document opened.

Maya leaned closer.

Her name appeared at the top.

Date of birth.

Hospital.

Mother:

*Sarah Johnson.*

Father:

*Marcus Johnson.*

Maya exhaled.

Marcus stared.

“I'm her father.””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“Then why did you let everyone think otherwise?””

Vanessa's shoulders began shaking.

“Because Sarah's father wanted you.””

Maya frowned.

“My grandfather?””

Sarah nodded.

“He had money. Influence. People everywhere.””

Vanessa continued.

“He believed you should be raised by his family.””

Marcus looked confused.

“And you went along with it?””

“I was afraid.””

Sarah shook her head.

“She wasn't just afraid.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Stop.””

Sarah's voice was quiet.

“She took money.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Sarah looked at Maya.

“Vanessa accepted money to keep you away from me.””

Vanessa's eyes closed.

“For years.””

Maya stared at her stepmother.

“How much?””

Vanessa whispered,

“Two hundred thousand.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“Two hundred thousand dollars?””

Vanessa nodded.

“But that money wasn't for me.””

“Then who got it?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“My father.””

Sarah went still.

Marcus stared at her.

“You said your father was dead.””

Vanessa looked up.

“He was.””

A notification suddenly appeared on the laptop.

*NEW FILE RECEIVED.*

Marcus clicked it.

A scanned photograph opened.

It showed a man standing beside Vanessa.

Marcus recognized him immediately.

He had seen that face in old family photographs.

Daniel stepped closer.

“That isn't her father.””

Sarah's eyes widened.

“Marcus…”

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Then at Vanessa.

“Who is that man?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Maya zoomed in.

There was something written on the back of the photograph.

A name.

*Thomas Reed.*

Maya whispered,

“Who is Thomas Reed?””

Daniel took a step backward.

Sarah's face went white.

Vanessa began to cry.

Marcus stared at all three of them.

“Somebody start talking.””

Sarah finally whispered,

“Thomas Reed is the reason I disappeared.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Nobody had heard the lock turn.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

“You should have stayed gone, Sarah.””

Everyone turned.

An older Black man stood there.

Silver hair.

Dark coat.

And a cane in one hand.

May you like

Vanessa whispered,

“Dad.””
