Chapter 1: “She Attacked Me!”
“She attacked me!””
Jessica’s scream ripped through the bridal dressing room before Daniel had even reached the vanity.
The room looked like a wedding magazine spread moments earlier—white flowers spilling from crystal vases, champagne glasses glowing beneath the mirror lights, makeup brushes arranged across the spotless vanity.
Now a chair lay overturned.
Foundation bottles rolled across the cream-colored floor.
A lipstick had cracked open beneath Jessica’s white beaded gown.
And Jessica was sitting in the middle of it all, clutching her forearm with both hands as tears streamed down her face.
Daniel rushed through the doorway.
His black tuxedo jacket was still perfectly buttoned, but his breathing was hard from running down the hallway. Two Black relatives followed close behind him, with several bridesmaids gathering at the doorway.
Jessica looked up at him.
Her veil had slipped over one shoulder.
Her curls were tangled around her face.
“Daniel,” she sobbed.
“She attacked me!””
She pointed directly at Gloria.
Gloria stood several feet away beside the cream sofa.
The sixty-two-year-old woman hadn't moved.
Her hands were raised slightly, palms open.
Empty.
Her silver-streaked braided updo remained perfectly pinned, though a few strands had come loose around her temples. Her dark navy formal dress was immaculate.
She looked from Jessica to Daniel.
Then down at the overturned chair.
Then back at Jessica.
“I didn't touch her,” Gloria said quietly.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Mom, what did you do?””
The words struck harder than Gloria expected.
Her lips parted.
For one long second, she simply stared at her son.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “I never touched her.””
Jessica immediately buried her face against Daniel's shoulder.
“She was yelling at me,” Jessica cried.
“I tried to walk away, and she grabbed me.””
One bridesmaid covered her mouth.
Another glanced nervously toward Gloria.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Why would my mother grab you?””
“I don't know!”” Jessica cried.
“She's never liked me!””
Gloria's eyes widened.
“That isn't true.””
Jessica turned her face just enough for Daniel to see it.
“I've tried so hard to make her happy.””
Gloria shook her head.
“Jessica, stop.””
Jessica flinched dramatically.
Daniel looked back at his mother.
“Please,” he said, his voice trembling with anger.
“Just tell me what happened.””
Gloria stared at him.
The son she'd raised.
The little boy who used to fall asleep with his head against her shoulder.
The man she had watched stand at the altar rehearsal only an hour earlier, smiling like the happiest man alive.
And now he was looking at her as though she were a stranger.
“I walked in,” Gloria said.
“That's all.””
Jessica began crying harder.
Daniel immediately turned toward her.
“Are you hurt?””
“My arm.””
Daniel crouched beside her.
“Let me see.””
Jessica slowly extended her forearm.
Several red scratches ran across the skin.
Daniel's expression hardened.
Gloria swallowed.
“I didn't do that.””
Jessica's shoulders shook.
“You don't have to keep lying.””
Something changed inside Gloria.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something colder.
She looked toward the illuminated mirror.
At first, she wasn't sure what had caught her attention.
Then she saw it.
A tiny red light.
Blinking.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
The security camera.
Mounted in the upper corner beside the mirror.
Gloria's breathing stopped.
She looked at Jessica.
Jessica was still hiding behind Daniel.
Still crying.
Still shaking.
But Gloria noticed something.
Jessica wasn't looking at her anymore.
She was looking at Daniel.
Waiting.
Gloria slowly raised one finger.
“Then show him the camera.””
The room went silent.
Jessica stopped crying.
Not gradually.
Instantly.
Her trembling ceased.
Her eyes snapped toward the mirror.
Daniel noticed.
So did everyone else.
Jessica's face changed.
“Daniel,” she said quickly, “don't—”
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Jessica's lips trembled.
“Nothing.””
But Daniel was already looking at the little red light.
Then at the tablet lying beside the makeup brushes.
Gloria lowered her hand.
“There's a recording.””
Jessica's eyes widened.
May you like
Daniel picked up the tablet.
And for the first time that morning, Jessica looked genuinely afraid.
