Chapter 10: The Wedding That Never Happened

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel stared at the document in Camille's hand.

Then he looked at Jessica.

She was standing beneath the bright mirror lights, surrounded by scattered makeup bottles and crushed flowers, still wearing the white wedding gown she had expected to walk down the aisle in.

Her lips trembled.

“That isn't what you think.””

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Jessica opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Camille placed the document on the vanity.

“Your father discovered the policy shortly before he died.””

Daniel looked at it.

“Why would he put Jessica on a policy?””

“He didn't.””

Daniel looked up.

Camille shook her head.

“The policy was altered after his death.””

Gloria stepped forward.

“That's impossible.””

Marcus nodded.

“It should have been.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Then who changed it?””

Camille pointed to the signature.

“Your father's signature was forged.””

Daniel picked up the document.

He studied the handwriting.

His father had signed countless things in front of him when he was growing up.

The signature looked perfect.

Too perfect.

“Who forged it?””

Camille looked at Jessica.

Jessica whispered, “I didn't.””

Camille didn't blink.

“I know.””

Everyone stared at her.

Daniel frowned.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then why accuse her?””

“Because she was part of the plan.””

Jessica shook her head.

“I didn't know.””

Camille nodded.

“I believe you.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Then explain.””

Camille took a breath.

“Three months ago, Jessica came to the hotel because she received a message.””

Jessica wiped her cheeks.

“It said someone had information about your father.””

Camille continued.

“The person who sent it wasn't me.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Who was it?””

Camille looked toward Marcus.

Marcus answered.

“We don't know.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You don't know?””

“We knew someone was using your father's name.””

“And you did nothing?””

“We were trying to find them.””

Gloria's voice trembled.

“While my son was planning his wedding?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“We thought the danger had passed.””

Camille shook her head.

“It hadn't.””

Daniel looked at Jessica.

“Why did you stage the attack?””

Jessica's tears finally fell freely.

“Because I thought Gloria knew.””

Gloria stared at her.

“Knew what?””

“That someone was trying to kill Daniel.””

Silence.

Daniel's face changed.

Jessica continued.

“The first message I received said your mother was involved.””

Gloria shook her head.

“You believed that?””

“I didn't know what to believe.””

“So you framed me?””

Jessica looked down.

“I wanted Daniel to stop trusting you long enough for me to figure out who was behind it.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the messages said if I told you, you'd be next.””

Daniel's anger softened for one brief moment.

Then hardened again.

“You still lied.””

Jessica nodded.

“Yes.””

“You hurt yourself.””

“Yes.””

“You accused my mother.””

“Yes.””

“You stole the key.””

Jessica closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked away.

She whispered, “I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel turned back.

“You don't protect someone by making them afraid of the person they love.””

Jessica began crying harder.

“I know.””

Gloria walked toward her.

Jessica flinched.

But Gloria didn't strike her.

She simply stood in front of her.

“You were afraid,” Gloria said.

Jessica nodded.

“But you made me pay for your fear.””

“I know.””

Gloria looked at the wedding gown.

“You nearly destroyed my son's life.””

Jessica lowered her head.

“I know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who sent the messages?””

Camille looked at Marcus.

Marcus reached into his jacket again.

This time he pulled out a small envelope.

“We found this in your father's old office.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

His father's handwriting.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

His hands began shaking.

He read it aloud.

“If you're reading this, I was right to be afraid.””

Gloria covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“The person closest to me is not the person you think.””

He stopped.

His eyes moved to the next line.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Dad wrote your name.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

Daniel kept reading.

“Marcus knows where the records are. Trust him only if he gives you the key.””

Daniel looked down at the brass key in his hand.

Marcus said quietly, “Your father gave it to me the night he died.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Why?””

“He told me to hide it.””

“From who?””

Marcus looked at Jessica.

“From the person searching for it.””

Jessica shook her head.

“That was me.””

“No,” Marcus said.

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus continued.

“You were searching for it because someone told you it contained evidence against Gloria.””

Jessica stared.

“They lied to me.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at Camille.

“And you?””

Camille slowly nodded.

“Your father was helping me expose the fraud.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“You worked with him.””

“Yes.””

“Were you the woman in the photograph?””

“Yes.””

Gloria closed her eyes.

For years, she had believed that photograph meant betrayal.

It had meant something else.

Camille looked at her.

“Your husband wasn't cheating.””

Gloria's tears finally fell.

“He never told me.””

“He wanted to.””

“Why didn't he?””

“Because he was afraid whoever was stealing from the company would come after you and Daniel.””

Daniel looked down at the letter.

“And then they killed him.””

Camille nodded.

“We believe so.””

The room became quiet again.

Outside, wedding guests could be heard laughing faintly in the hallway.

Music began playing somewhere beyond the door.

The ceremony was supposed to start.

Daniel looked at the clock.

Then at Jessica.

She understood before he spoke.

“You're not marrying me.””

Daniel swallowed.

“No.””

Jessica closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I understand.””

He stepped closer.

“I don't hate you.””

She looked up.

“That almost hurts more.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were scared.””

“Yes.””

“You made terrible choices.””

“Yes.””

“And I can't spend my life wondering whether the person beside me is telling me the truth.””

Jessica nodded slowly.

“You shouldn't.””

Gloria placed a hand on Daniel's shoulder.

Daniel looked at her.

Then he took the wedding ring from his pocket.

He stared at it for a moment.

Finally, he closed his fingers around it.

Jessica looked at the floor.

“I hope someday you forgive me.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“I hope someday you forgive yourself.””

Jessica nodded.

Then she turned toward the doorway.

Tasha stepped aside.

Jessica walked out alone.

No dramatic scream.

No final accusation.

Just the soft sound of her wedding dress trailing behind her.

Daniel watched until she disappeared.

Camille picked up the evidence.

“There's one more thing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She handed him a final photograph.

It showed his father standing beside the hotel entrance.

On the back was a date.

And beneath it, four words.

*I KNOW WHO DID IT.*

Daniel looked at the handwriting.

Then at the photograph.

His eyes widened.

Because beneath the message was a name.

Not Marcus.

Not Camille.

Not Gloria.

A name Daniel hadn't heard spoken in years.

His father's business partner.

The man everyone had believed died in a car accident six months before Daniel's father.

Daniel slowly looked toward the dressing-room door.

The hallway outside was empty.

The wedding music stopped.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a man's voice came through.

Calm.

Familiar.

“You finally found the key.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

He looked at Gloria.

Camille immediately reached for the phone.

But the caller continued.

“Now ask your mother what she did with the second key.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

Gloria went completely still.

The call ended.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Mom?””

Gloria looked at him.

Her face held the grief of decades.

Then, slowly, she reached into the hidden inner pocket of her navy dress.

She pulled out another brass key.

Identical to the first.

Daniel stared.

Gloria whispered, “Your father gave me this one.””

She looked toward the door.

“And he told me never to tell you why.””

The room fell silent.

May you like

The wedding was over.

But the truth had only just begun.
