Chapter 3: The Bride’s Other Face

Nobody spoke.

The dressing room had become painfully bright.

Every mirror bulb was still glowing.

Every flower was still standing.

The champagne glasses were still untouched.

But the room no longer felt like a place where a wedding was about to begin.

Daniel stood in the center, holding the tablet.

Jessica stood several feet away.

Her white gown seemed almost too clean for the chaos surrounding her.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

He stared at her.

“You lied.””

Jessica shook her head.

“I panicked.””

“You staged the whole thing.””

“I didn't mean for it to go this far.””

Gloria looked at her son.

“Daniel, let her talk.””

He turned toward his mother.

“Mom, she just accused you of assaulting her.””

“I know.””

“She scratched herself.””

“I saw it.””

“She waited for you.””

“I saw that too.””

Daniel looked down.

His fingers tightened around the tablet.

Jessica stepped toward him.

“Daniel, please.””

He backed away.

She stopped.

“I was scared,” she said.

“Of what?””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears again.

This time, nobody rushed to comfort her.

“Of losing you.””

Daniel stared.

“So you blamed my mother?””

Jessica's lips trembled.

“I thought she wanted you to leave me.””

Gloria's face hardened.

“I never said that.””

“You didn't have to.””

“What does that mean?””

Jessica wiped her cheek.

“You've never accepted me.””

Gloria took a slow breath.

“I invited you into my family.””

“You judged me.””

“I asked you questions.””

“You interrogated me.””

“I wanted to know the woman my son was marrying.””

Jessica's voice rose.

“And I knew you'd eventually turn him against me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't get to do this.””

Jessica looked at him.

“Do what?””

“Make yourself the victim again.””

Her face changed.

For the first time, the tears seemed less convincing.

One of the relatives quietly stepped away from the doorway.

Another lowered his phone.

Tasha stared at Jessica with disbelief.

“You actually planned this?””

Jessica snapped toward her.

“Don't act innocent.””

Tasha recoiled.

“I didn't do anything.””

“You were always on her side.””

Daniel turned.

“Jessica.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Stop.””

The single word silenced her.

Daniel placed the tablet on the vanity.

Then he looked at the scratches on her arm.

“You did that to yourself.””

Jessica crossed her arms.

“They hurt.””

“You hurt yourself.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why would you destroy this room?””

Jessica's breathing became uneven.

“I wanted you to believe me.””

Gloria closed her eyes.

Daniel stared at his bride.

“You wanted me to believe you more than I wanted to know the truth.””

Jessica's eyes filled again.

“I love you.””

Daniel looked at her for several seconds.

Then he said quietly, “Do you?””

Jessica nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you make me choose between you and my mother?””

“I didn't.””

“You pointed at her.””

“You weren't there.””

“You waited until I walked in.””

Jessica's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Daniel's voice broke.

“You knew exactly what I would do.””

That landed.

Jessica looked away.

The room stayed silent.

Then Daniel reached for the tablet again.

He replayed the footage.

Jessica alone.

The chair.

The makeup.

The scratches.

The waiting.

The fake tears.

Gloria entering.

Jessica screaming.

He watched it without blinking.

When the video ended, he looked toward his mother.

“I'm sorry.””

Gloria's eyes filled.

She crossed the room.

For a moment, Daniel looked like the little boy she'd raised again.

She touched his cheek.

“You don't have to apologize for loving someone.””

Daniel's eyes closed.

“But I should've believed you.””

Gloria shook her head.

“You believed what you saw.””

“No.””

She glanced at Jessica.

“I think I believed what I wanted to see.””

Jessica's shoulders dropped.

Her entire posture changed.

The performance was gone.

No dramatic sobbing.

No trembling voice.

No carefully arranged expression.

Just a woman standing in a white wedding gown, surrounded by the evidence of her own lie.

Daniel picked up his phone.

Jessica's eyes followed him.

“Who are you calling?””

He didn't answer.

“Daniel?””

He walked toward the doorway.

She followed.

“Daniel, wait.””

He stopped.

Jessica grabbed his sleeve.

He looked down at her hand.

She slowly released him.

“Please don't leave me here.””

Daniel looked at the overturned chair.

Then at the tablet.

Then at his bride.

“I don't know who I'm standing next to anymore.””

Jessica's face collapsed.

“Daniel…”

He stepped backward.

Behind them, the tiny red security light continued blinking beside the mirror.

And then the tablet chimed.

Everyone turned.

A new notification had appeared.

*SECURITY CAMERA — ADDITIONAL RECORDING AVAILABLE.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Jessica went completely still.

Gloria looked at her.

May you like

And this time, Jessica wasn't pretending to be afraid.

She was terrified.
