Chapter 3: The Stranger With My Face

The woman’s words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

Because when your entire world changes in a single afternoon, your brain refuses to accept it.

I stared at the stranger holding my photograph.

Then I looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

My mother looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

The older woman stepped closer.

Her hands trembled as she held the picture toward me.

“This was taken the day you were born.””

My heart started pounding.

“I don’t understand.””

The woman’s eyes moved to Vanessa.

“You never told her?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Please leave.””

The woman shook her head.

“No more hiding.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

The last name hit me.

Carter.

My last name.

I looked at Marcus.

“What is happening?””

Evelyn looked back at me.

“I’m your grandmother.””

The world went silent again.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“My grandmother?””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus looked devastated.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“My grandmother is dead.””

That was what I had always been told.

My entire childhood.

No grandparents.

No extended family.

Just Mom and Marcus.

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know what you were told.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You told me she died.””

Vanessa whispered, “Nia…”

“You told me I had no family.””

Her silence answered for her.

I felt something inside me crack.

All those years.

All those birthdays where I wondered why I didn’t have grandparents.

All those school projects where everyone brought family pictures.

All those moments when I asked questions and got simple answers.

Because simple answers were easier than the truth.

Marcus reached toward me.

“Nia, listen.””

I stepped back.

“No. Everyone keeps telling me to listen.””

My voice shook.

“But nobody ever thought I deserved to know.””

The graduation crowd had moved farther away now.

The ceremony was beginning.

But I couldn’t hear anything.

Only my own heartbeat.

Evelyn looked at the card in Marcus’s hand.

“You still have it.””

Marcus nodded.

“I promised I would keep it safe.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You promised me you would never show her.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“I promised I would give her the choice when she was old enough.””

Vanessa whispered, “She was just a child.””

“And now she’s twenty-two.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What did you write?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes filled with regret.

“I wrote the truth.””

“Then why didn’t I get to read it?””

She didn’t answer.

That hurt.

More than anger.

More than betrayal.

Because somewhere inside, I already knew.

There was something in that card she never wanted me to see.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She glanced at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The man you call your father saved your life.””

I felt my breath disappear.

Marcus looked down.

“Evelyn.””

“No,” she said softly.

“She deserves everything.””

I stared at Marcus.

“What did you save me from?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa quietly said:

“The day I left that card…”

She stopped.

Her hands started shaking.

“The day I left that card, I was running from someone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the campus entrance.

Her eyes widened.

And I followed her gaze.

May you like

A man I had never seen before was standing near the gates.

Watching us.
