Chapter 6: The Father I Never Met
The paper inside was older than I expected.
Not fragile.
Not damaged.
Just carefully preserved.
Like someone had touched it thousands of times without ever letting it disappear.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The first line was enough to make my chest tighten.
My Dearest Nia,
I had never seen my mother’s handwriting before.
Not on a birthday card.
Not in a note.
Not anywhere.
And yet, seeing those words felt strangely familiar.
Like hearing a song you didn’t know you remembered.
I looked at Vanessa.
She covered her mouth.
Marcus looked away.
Evelyn quietly whispered, “She wrote that the night everything changed.””
I kept reading.
Nia,
If you are reading this, then Marcus kept his promise.
My eyes moved to him.
He closed his eyes.
The card wasn’t about him hiding the truth.
It was about him protecting it.
I continued.
He will tell you that I loved you. He will tell you that I was scared. Both things are true.
My breathing became uneven.
But he will never tell you what I did.
I stopped.
The words blurred.
“What did you do?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
I looked back at the card.
I kept reading.
I made choices when I was young that hurt people I loved. I thought I was protecting you. I thought I could fix everything before you were old enough to understand.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
I lied about your father.
I looked up.
The stranger was watching me.
Marcus looked like he already knew what came next.
Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.
I read the next line.
Your father did not leave because he didn’t love you.
My heart stopped.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked down.
Your father left because I made him believe he had no place in your life.
The campus noise disappeared.
Everything became quiet.
I couldn’t hear the graduation music.
I couldn’t hear people talking.
All I heard was my own breathing.
“You lied?””
My voice was directed at Vanessa.
She didn’t answer.
“You told me he left.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I know.””
“You told me he didn’t want me.””
“I was wrong.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t make a mistake. You built my entire childhood around a lie.””
Vanessa looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From my own father?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I turned toward the stranger.
“Are you him?””
The man looked at me.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“Yes.””
The answer felt impossible.
“You’re my father?””
He nodded.
“My name is Daniel.””
I stared at him.
Twenty-two years.
A person who existed somewhere in the world.
A person who shared my blood.
A person I never knew.
“Why didn’t you find me?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“I tried.””
Vanessa whispered, “Don’t.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“I tried for years.””
He looked at me.
“I sent letters.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
“I called.””
Silence.
“I came to your house.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You told me he never came.””
Her face crumbled.
“I was scared.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Scared of what?””
She looked at me.
“Losing her.””
I felt something twist inside me.
“You thought knowing my father would make me stop loving you?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I thought I would lose my place in your life.””
The honesty hurt.
Because it was selfish.
But it was also human.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You should have told her.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
Daniel looked at the card.
“She wrote everything down.””
I looked at him.
“Everything?””
He nodded.
“She wrote the reason she left me.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“Why?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Because she found out something about me.””
Everyone became still.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who kept secrets.””
I felt exhausted.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
Another missing part of my life.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You never told her what happened after I left.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“The night I disappeared.””
Marcus frowned.
“You told Vanessa you were leaving.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t leave.””
My stomach dropped.
“Then what happened?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
May you like
And said the words that made her break down.
“Your mother told me Nia was dead.””
