Chapter 4: The Man From The Past

I knew immediately.

Not because I recognized him.

Because everyone else did.

Marcus went completely still.

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

Evelyn whispered something under her breath.

“After all these years…”

I looked at them.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The stranger slowly walked toward us.

He wore a gray suit and carried himself like someone who believed he belonged anywhere he stood.

Students passed him without noticing.

Families took graduation pictures around him.

But my family looked like they were watching a storm arrive.

The man stopped a few feet away.

His eyes landed on Vanessa.

“You really thought you could hide forever?””

My mother looked away.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

The man smiled.

“Still protecting her?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“You don’t get to come here.””

The man looked at me.

Then at the bouquet in my hands.

“So this is Nia.””

I froze.

“How do you know my name?””

He smiled slightly.

“Because I knew you before you knew yourself.””

Vanessa immediately moved closer.

“Nia, don’t listen to him.””

The man laughed softly.

“Interesting. That’s the same thing you told her when you hid the truth.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What truth?””

The man reached into his jacket.

For one terrifying second, I thought he was reaching for another secret.

Instead, he pulled out an old photograph.

He held it up.

Even from a distance, I could see it was a picture of a little girl.

Me.

Standing beside him.

My hands went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

The man smiled.

“No, Nia. What’s impossible is the story you were given.””

Marcus grabbed the card tighter.

“Enough.””

The man looked at the sealed envelope.

And his smile disappeared.

“You still have that?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You knew?””

The man’s eyes moved to her.

“I knew you kept one copy.””

My heart raced.

One copy?

“What does that mean?””

The man ignored me.

“You should have destroyed it.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“That card belongs to Nia.””

The man laughed.

“No. That card belongs to the past.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Then the stranger.

Everyone was fighting over pieces of my life like I wasn’t standing there.

“I want the truth,” I said.

Nobody moved.

“I want all of it.””

Marcus looked at me.

His eyes were full of pain.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I held up the roses.

The same roses he brought because he thought today would be perfect.

“I spent twenty-two years believing I knew my family.””

My voice cracked.

“And now I find out everyone was protecting a secret.””

The stranger looked at me carefully.

“You really are her daughter.””

Vanessa flinched.

“What does that mean?””

The man looked toward Marcus.

Then toward the sealed card.

“It means when that envelope is opened, she won’t just learn who her father is.””

The air changed.

I stared at the card.

“What else will I learn?””

Nobody answered.

The man took one step closer.

“You’ll learn why your mother left you.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t.””

The word came out like a warning.

Not to him.

To me.

Marcus slowly lifted the sealed card.

His fingers touched the edge.

The same card that had survived eighteen years.

The same card everyone feared.

May you like

And just before he broke the seal, Vanessa whispered something that made me forget how to breathe.

“Nia… if you open that, you’ll never see any of us the same way again.””
