Chapter 4: The Meeting at the Long Table

The next morning, the Moretti dining hall looked exactly the same.

That was what made it unsettling.

The chandelier still cast warm golden light over the long table.

The silverware was still perfectly arranged.

The flowers in the center were still fresh.

Anyone walking into the room would have thought nothing had changed.

But everyone inside knew better.

The entire household had shifted.

Ophelia sat at one end of the table wearing another elegant cream outfit.

Different pearls.

Same confidence.

She looked like a woman attending a business meeting.

Not someone accused of endangering a child.

Fabian noticed.

That bothered him.

People who were innocent usually looked for understanding.

People who were powerful looked for advantage.

Marcus sat beside Fabian with the contract file open.

Security stood quietly near the doorway.

Gemma remained with Lucy in the adjoining sitting area.

Close enough to help.

Far enough away from the confrontation.

Ophelia looked around.

“Is this really necessary?””

Fabian didn’t answer.

She smiled slightly.

“You’re turning a family matter into a public trial.””

“No,” Fabian said.

His voice remained calm.

“I’m preventing a family matter from being hidden.””

The smile disappeared.

Marcus opened the folder.

“We reviewed the contract documents scheduled for Monday.””

Ophelia leaned back.

“And?””

“The authority transfer clauses.””

A small pause.

“The revised terms would give you expanded control over household operations, medical decisions involving Lucy, and estate management during Fabian’s extended business travel.””

Ophelia folded her hands.

“Because someone needed to be responsible.””

Fabian stared at her.

“You mean you.””

“Yes.””

She looked directly at him.

“Because you’re always away.””

The words struck deeper because there was truth buried inside them.

Fabian had traveled.

He had missed dinners.

Missed school events.

Missed ordinary moments.

Ophelia knew exactly where to place the knife.

Not a physical one.

A personal one.

“You weren’t there,” she said quietly.

Fabian said nothing.

“You built an empire, Fabian. You became respected. Powerful. Feared.””

Her voice softened.

“But while you were doing that, someone had to keep this family together.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

This was what she did.

She mixed truth with deception.

She took a real weakness and used it as permission.

Fabian looked toward the sitting room.

Lucy was coloring beside Gemma.

Safe.

For now.

“You helped raise my daughter,” Fabian said.

Ophelia nodded.

“And I loved her.””

Fabian’s expression hardened.

“Then explain the inhaler.””

The room went silent.

For the first time, Ophelia’s confidence slipped.

Only briefly.

But it happened.

“I already explained.””

“No.””

Fabian leaned forward.

“You explained why you think you should not be questioned.””

Marcus placed a copy of Gemma’s notebook on the table.

“Your explanation also conflicts with recorded events.””

Ophelia looked at the notebook.

Then at Gemma.

The young maid stood straighter.

“You kept all this?””

Gemma’s voice was quiet.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Gemma looked at Lucy.

“Because nobody else was.””

The answer was simple.

And that made it powerful.

Ophelia’s expression changed.

“You think you understand this family?””

Gemma shook her head.

“No.””

A pause.

“I think I understand Lucy.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Fabian looked at Gemma.

A young woman who had no title.

No influence.

No power.

And yet she had done what everyone else failed to do.

She paid attention.

Marcus turned another page.

“There is one more issue.””

Fabian looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

“The contract amendments were prepared three weeks before the renewal meeting.””

Ophelia said nothing.

Fabian slowly looked up.

Three weeks.

Before Monday.

Before the confrontation.

Before the dinner.

“You were planning this.””

Ophelia’s face became unreadable.

“I was planning for the future.””

“No.””

Fabian stood.

“You were planning for my absence.””

The chandelier above them hummed softly.

The entire room felt like it was waiting.

Ophelia rose slowly.

“You should be careful, Fabian.””

There it was again.

The warning.

The same one she had given Gemma.

But this time, it didn’t work.

Because Fabian finally understood something.

Ophelia didn’t believe she was wrong.

She believed she deserved control.

And people who believed they deserved power rarely gave it away willingly.

Fabian picked up the contract papers.

“These are suspended.””

Ophelia stared at him.

“You would destroy this family over accusations from a maid?””

Fabian looked toward Lucy.

Then back at her.

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“I’m protecting my family from someone who forgot what family means.””

For the first time, Ophelia had no immediate response.

And that silence told Fabian everything.

The woman who always had an answer had finally run out of one.

But as Marcus gathered the files, his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

Fabian noticed.

“What is it?””

Marcus slowly looked up.

“There’s another signature on the documents.””

Fabian frowned.

“Whose?””

Marcus turned the phone around.

A name appeared.

A name Fabian recognized.

May you like

A name that made the entire room feel colder.

“Someone inside your company.””
