Chapter 8: The Secret Before Lucy

The hardest truths were never the ones that shocked you.

They were the ones that made old memories rearrange themselves.

Fabian sat in his office hours later, staring at a photograph.

Lucy.

Three years old.

Laughing.

Holding his hand.

A picture taken on a day he thought was ordinary.

Now he wondered what else he didn’t know.

Marcus stood across from him.

“You need to tell me something.””

Fabian looked up.

“What?””

“The message.””

Fabian said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“What happened before Lucy was born?””

The question sat between them.

Heavy.

Fabian looked away.

“There are things about my past that don’t matter.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Someone broke into your daughter’s room and left a message connected to your past.””

A pause.

“Now it matters.””

Fabian knew he was right.

He hated that.

For years, he had built a reputation around being untouchable.

But everyone had something they buried.

Something they protected.

Something they hoped would never return.

Before Lucy was born, Fabian had been different.

Not just younger.

Different.

More ruthless.

More focused on winning than understanding.

His company had been expanding rapidly.

He had enemies.

Competitors.

People who wanted him to fail.

And during that time, there had been one person who knew the version of Fabian nobody else saw.

His former business partner.

Adrian Moretti.

His younger brother.

“Adrian,” Marcus said.

Fabian looked up.

“You know the name?””

“I know the family history.””

Fabian nodded slowly.

“Everyone thinks Adrian left because we disagreed.””

Marcus waited.

“But that’s not the whole story.””

Fabian walked to the cabinet and removed an old file.

He placed it on the desk.

“Adrian believed I cared more about the company than people.””

Marcus opened the file.

Inside were old legal documents.

Disputes.

Arguments.

Financial records.

“He accused you of betrayal?””

Fabian nodded.

“He thought I pushed him out.””

“Did you?””

The question was direct.

Fabian respected that.

“I made a decision.””

Marcus looked at him.

“That’s not an answer.””

Fabian sighed.

“No.””

A pause.

“I didn’t give him a choice.””

The admission was quiet.

But honest.

For years, Fabian had avoided saying those words.

Marcus turned the pages.

“Where is he now?””

Fabian looked down.

“Nobody knows.””

“Did Ophelia know him?””

Another silence.

Then Fabian answered.

“Yes.””

The pieces began moving.

Marcus looked toward the door.

“Do you think she contacted him?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you think it’s possible.””

Fabian didn’t deny it.

Because now he saw the larger picture.

Ophelia had always known where the family’s wounds were.

She knew about Adrian.

She knew about Fabian’s guilt.

She knew exactly which secrets could weaken him.

The office door opened.

Gemma stood there.

“I’m sorry.””

Fabian looked up.

“What happened?””

She held a folder.

“I found this in the staff records.””

Marcus walked over.

“What is it?””

Gemma handed it to him.

“A note from years ago.””

Marcus opened it.

His expression changed.

Fabian noticed.

“What?””

Marcus slowly turned the paper.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not Ophelia.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Fabian stared.

Because he recognized it immediately.

Adrian Moretti.

The note was dated three years ago.

The month Lucy was born.

The message was short.

*If Fabian chooses the child over the empire, everything changes.*

Fabian felt his chest tighten.

He read it again.

Then again.

Because suddenly the mystery wasn’t only about who wanted control.

It was about who had been waiting.

And why Lucy’s birth had been the moment everything started moving.

Marcus looked at him.

“Fabian.””

But Fabian was already thinking about one thing.

One person.

A brother he had not seen in years.

A man who believed Fabian had destroyed his life.

And now, somehow, he was connected to the threat against Fabian’s daughter.

Fabian folded the note carefully.

“We find Adrian.””

Marcus nodded.

“And if he’s involved?””

Fabian looked toward Lucy’s room.

His expression hardened.

“Then I stop protecting the past.””

Outside the mansion, unseen by anyone inside, a car remained parked across the street.

The driver watched the lights in the windows.

A phone screen illuminated in the darkness.

A message was sent.

*He found Adrian’s name.*

A reply came moments later.

*Good. Now he’s ready for the truth.*
