Chapter 7: The Truth Buried in the Files

Fabian Moretti had built his entire life on one principle.

Control the information, and you control the outcome.

That belief had made him successful.

It had also made him vulnerable.

Because while he was watching the outside world for threats, someone inside his own circle had been carefully feeding him a version of reality that wasn’t true.

And now every question had another question hiding behind it.

Who created the documents?

Who changed the records?

Who convinced Daniel he was protecting the company?

And why was Lucy at the center of it?

The message on Fabian’s phone remained on the screen.

*You were never supposed to find the first layer.*

Marcus stared at it.

“Do you recognize the number?””

Fabian shook his head.

“No.””

“Could it be traced?””

“Everything can be traced.””

Marcus looked at him.

“That’s not the same as saying it will be easy.””

Fabian placed the phone on the table.

“Nothing about this was supposed to be easy.””

Daniel sat quietly across from them.

The confident executive who had walked into the room looking untouchable now looked like a man watching his own life fall apart.

“I swear to you,” Daniel said, “I didn’t know about any plan involving Lucy.””

Fabian looked at him.

“Did you know Ophelia wanted control?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Fabian noticed.

“How much?””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“She told me you were becoming distracted.””

Fabian’s eyes narrowed.

“Distracted?””

“She said your priorities had changed.””

A bitter smile crossed Fabian’s face.

“My priorities changed because I became a father.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

“No.””

Fabian stepped closer.

“You don’t.””

The room went quiet.

Because that was the truth.

Daniel knew numbers.

Contracts.

Assets.

Investments.

He understood the value of the company.

But he didn’t understand what Lucy meant to Fabian.

She wasn’t an heir.

She wasn’t a name attached to a legacy.

She was his daughter.

The one person who had made him question every decision he had ever made.

Marcus gathered the papers.

“We need to go through everything.””

Daniel nodded.

“There’s more.””

Fabian looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his briefcase and removed a small envelope.

“I found this yesterday.””

Marcus immediately became alert.

“Why didn’t you mention it?””

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””

Fabian almost laughed.

Almost.

Everyone had become afraid.

Everyone had been protecting themselves.

And somehow, Lucy was the only person in the entire situation who had no power at all.

“What is it?”” Fabian asked.

Daniel handed him the envelope.

Inside was a copy of an old medical authorization form.

Fabian read it.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

Daniel swallowed.

“An emergency authority document.””

Fabian looked closer.

It listed a temporary guardian arrangement.

A person who could make medical and personal decisions for Lucy.

Fabian’s eyes moved to the signature.

Ophelia.

The date was six months earlier.

Before the dinner.

Before the contract.

Before anyone knew there was a problem.

“She was preparing this,” Marcus said quietly.

Fabian didn’t respond.

Because now he understood the pattern.

Ophelia had not created one plan.

She had created several.

The contract.

The authority transfer.

The medical paperwork.

Every piece was designed to move Fabian away from control of his own daughter.

A slow takeover.

A quiet one.

The kind nobody noticed until it was complete.

His phone rang.

Security.

Fabian answered.

“Talk.””

“Sir.””

The guard’s voice sounded tense.

“There’s been a situation at the estate.””

Fabian’s body went still.

“What situation?””

“Miss Lucy’s room.””

Everything else disappeared.

“Is she okay?””

A pause.

“She’s safe.””

Fabian closed his eyes for half a second.

Then opened them.

“What happened?””

“The nanny camera system was accessed.””

Marcus looked up.

Daniel went pale.

“By who?”” Fabian demanded.

“We’re checking.””

Fabian grabbed his coat.

“No.””

He looked at Marcus.

“We’re done checking from a distance.””

They left immediately.

When Fabian returned to the mansion, the atmosphere felt different.

The security team moved faster.

The staff avoided eye contact.

Everyone knew something had happened.

Everyone knew the house was no longer just a home.

It was a crime scene without police tape.

Fabian walked upstairs.

Lucy was sitting on her bed.

Gemma beside her.

The moment Lucy saw him, she reached out.

“Daddy.””

Fabian crossed the room.

He held her tightly.

“I’m here.””

Lucy nodded against his shoulder.

“Someone was watching.””

The words were quiet.

Fabian pulled back.

“What do you mean?””

She pointed toward the small camera in the corner.

“Gemma said not to look at it.””

Fabian looked at Gemma.

She nodded.

“The camera moved.””

Marcus examined the device.

“Someone remotely accessed the system.””

Fabian looked around the room.

His daughter’s room.

A place that should have been untouched.

A place where she should have felt completely safe.

His anger grew.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Focused.

“Find out who.””

The security team nodded.

But before they moved, Lucy reached for something on her nightstand.

A small stuffed rabbit.

She held it out.

“I found this.””

Fabian took it.

A small piece of paper was tucked inside the toy.

His heart sank.

He opened it.

Only one sentence.

*Ask your father what happened before you were born.*

The room went silent.

Fabian stared at the message.

Not because he understood it.

May you like

Because he didn’t.

And that scared him more.
