The Daughter Behind the Wall / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Secret Emily Carried

We didn’t leave through the front door.

That was the moment I realized my life had changed forever.

Normal people walked out of houses.

They grabbed keys.

They locked doors.

They worried about bills, traffic, and whether they remembered to buy milk.

But my family was crawling through a hidden passage behind my bedroom wall because someone was coming for us.

That was not normal.

And somehow, I knew Marcus was telling the truth.

The passage was narrow and covered in dust. The walls pressed against my shoulders as we moved deeper into the darkness.

Lily held Emily’s hand.

Lila held mine.

That almost destroyed me.

Because every time I looked down and saw her tiny fingers wrapped around mine, I felt a thousand emotions fighting inside my chest.

Love.

Confusion.

Anger.

Guilt.

A child had been living in fear, and I had been sleeping peacefully on the other side of a wall.

I hated that.

“What happened to her mother?”” I asked Marcus.

He kept walking.

“She disappeared.””

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Was she killed?””

Marcus stopped.

The silence was enough.

Emily covered her mouth.

“You knew?””

I turned toward her.

“You knew about that too?””

Her face broke.

“I knew something happened.””

“Emily.””

“I swear, Ryan, I didn’t know everything.””

“You knew enough to hide this from me.””

She looked down.

“You’re right.””

I wasn’t ready for her to admit that.

I wanted an argument.

An excuse.

Something I could fight against.

Instead, she gave me the truth.

And somehow, that hurt worse.

Marcus continued walking.

“Your wife isn’t the only person who kept secrets.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He sighed.

“It means our mother wasn’t the only one afraid.””

The passage opened into a small basement beneath the house.

There was an old chair.

A table.

A stack of boxes.

Someone had been living there.

Someone had been hiding evidence.

Marcus walked to one of the boxes and opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Documents.

He picked up the top picture.

Then handed it to me.

My hands shook when I saw it.

A young woman stood beside me.

I was younger.

Maybe twenty-one.

She was holding a baby.

And I was smiling.

Not the polite smile I gave strangers.

A real smile.

The kind I hadn’t seen on my own face in years.

“Who is she?”” I whispered.

“Her name was Naomi.””

I looked at Lila.

“She’s her mother?””

Marcus nodded.

“You loved her.””

I stared at the picture.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

That scared me more than anything.

“What happened to my memories?””

Marcus sat down.

“When you found out about us, you wanted to bring everything into the open.””

“About us?””

“About our father. About what he did.””

My hands tightened around the photograph.

“What did he do?””

Marcus looked at Emily.

And this time, she couldn’t hide.

“He destroyed people,” she said quietly.

I looked at my wife.

“You know who he is.””

Emily nodded.

“My father knew.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

She wiped her tears.

“My father knew Marcus. He knew your family years ago.””

The room spun.

“You’re telling me your father knew all of this?””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me?””

“I didn’t know at first.””

“When did you find out?””

Emily looked at me.

“The week after our wedding.””

I felt something crack inside.

“The week after?””

She nodded.

“I found documents in my father’s office.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“About Lila?””

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Emily looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Because when I tried…”

She stopped.

“When you tried what?””

Her voice broke.

“Someone threatened us.””

The basement went silent.

Marcus stood.

“Who?””

Emily looked terrified.

“The same person who has been watching this house.””

A sound came from above us.

A floorboard creaking.

Someone was inside.

Marcus immediately turned off the light.

Everyone froze.

Lila grabbed my hand tighter.

Then a voice came from the hidden passage.

A voice I had never heard before.

But somehow, it sounded familiar.

“Ryan.””

The person stopped.

Then said my name again.

“You were never supposed to find out.””

Marcus whispered one sentence.

May you like

And I knew the nightmare had only just begun.

“That’s our father.””
