The Daughter Behind the Wall / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Lies

The name stayed in my mind like a wound.

My uncle.

A man I had never met.

A man I didn’t even know existed.

Another ghost from a family full of them.

The sound of footsteps above us grew louder.

My father looked toward the ceiling.

“We don’t have much time.””

I wanted answers.

I wanted every missing piece of my life placed in front of me.

But for the first time, I understood something important.

Truth could wait.

Survival couldn’t.

Marcus grabbed the box of documents from the table.

“We need to leave through the old exit.””

My father nodded.

I looked at him.

“You knew there was another way out?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course you did.””

He looked at me.

I shook my head.

“Every person in my life has known something I didn’t.””

Nobody responded.

Because it was true.

My wife.

My father.

My brother.

Even my mother, who was gone and couldn’t defend herself.

Everyone had been protecting me.

But nobody had trusted me enough to tell me the truth.

We moved through the basement quickly.

Lily stayed close to Emily, while Lila held my hand.

I kept looking down at her.

My daughter.

A little girl who had spent years living in fear.

A little girl who knew my face before I knew hers.

I wanted to promise her that everything would be okay.

But I had learned something over the past few hours.

Promises were dangerous when you didn’t know what was coming.

We reached a metal door hidden behind shelves.

My father unlocked it.

The door opened into a narrow tunnel leading outside.

Cold air rushed in.

For a moment, I felt relief.

Then Marcus stopped.

“What?””

He looked back.

“We’re not alone.””

My body went tense.

“How do you know?””

He pointed.

On the ground near the doorway was a small object.

A photograph.

Someone had left it there.

I picked it up.

My hands froze.

It was a picture of me.

Not a recent picture.

A picture from when I was twenty-one.

The same year I supposedly forgot my past.

On the back, someone had written six words.

YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER.

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Anger.

Someone had spent decades controlling my life.

They took my memories.

They took my daughter.

They took my family.

And they thought I would just accept it.

“No more running,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

My father frowned.

“Ryan.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You spent my whole life deciding what I could handle.””

My voice became stronger.

“You don’t get to do that anymore.””

Marcus watched me carefully.

“What are you saying?””

I looked at the photograph.

“I’m saying we stop hiding.””

My father shook his head.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””

“Then explain it.””

He went quiet.

“Tell me everything.””

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then he finally spoke.

“My brother’s name is Daniel.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the fear on my father’s face meant everything.

“Daniel was smarter than me,” he continued.

“More patient. More charming. People trusted him.””

“And what did he do?””

My father looked down.

“He built an empire by making people disappear.””

Emily whispered.

“He’s the reason my father was afraid too.””

I looked at her.

“What does your father have to do with this?””

She took a shaky breath.

“My father worked with Daniel.””

The words landed heavily.

“What?””

“My father helped cover things up.””

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know until years later.””

I stared at her.

“So your family and mine were connected this whole time?””

“Yes.””

“And you married me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I loved you.””

I wanted to believe that.

I really did.

But love didn’t erase betrayal.

Not anymore.

Before I could answer, Marcus pulled out his phone.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He turned it toward me.

There was a message.

Unknown number.

A picture had been attached.

I opened it.

My stomach dropped.

It was a photo of Lily and Lila.

Taken minutes ago.

Inside our house.

The message below said:

BRING THE DOCUMENTS TO ME, OR THE GIRLS COME BACK ALONE.

Emily screamed.

“No.””

My father grabbed the phone.

“He’s here.””

I looked toward the house.

Everything inside me went cold.

Someone had been watching us.

Waiting.

Planning.

And now they had my daughters.

I looked at Marcus.

“What do we do?””

He stared at the screen.

Then he looked at me.

“Now you understand.””

“Understand what?””

“Why we spent all these years hiding.””

I tightened my fists.

“No.””

May you like

I looked back at the house.

“Now I understand why we have to stop.””
