The Daughter Behind the Wall / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Truth We Buried

We went back.

Everyone told me it was a mistake.

My father.

Marcus.

Even Emily.

But I couldn’t leave my daughters with someone who had already taken too much from us.

Fear had controlled my family for decades.

My mother lived with it.

My father ran from it.

Marcus survived because of it.

Emily carried it.

And now my children were paying the price.

I was done letting fear make decisions.

When we entered the house, everything was silent.

Too silent.

The front door was open.

The living room lights were off.

The same place where Lily had watched cartoons that morning now felt like a crime scene.

“Stay behind me,” Marcus whispered.

I almost smiled.

“You really like saying that.””

He looked at me.

“Because you really like walking into danger.””

I nodded.

“Maybe that’s something we have in common.””

For the first time, he smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

But real.

A brother’s smile.

We moved through the house.

Then we heard a voice.

“Ryan.””

My entire body froze.

Daniel stepped out from the hallway.

He was older than my father.

Late sixties maybe.

But his eyes were sharp.

Focused.

The kind of eyes that studied people before deciding how to use them.

Behind him stood Lily and Lila.

Both were safe.

Both were scared.

But alive.

I took one step forward.

“Let them go.””

Daniel smiled.

“You sound just like your father.””

“I’m nothing like him.””

Daniel laughed.

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

My father stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

The older man looked at him.

“So much time wasted.””

“You ruined our family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Your weakness ruined this family.””

Marcus moved closer.

“You took Naomi.””

Daniel’s expression changed slightly.

A tiny reaction.

But I saw it.

He knew the name.

“You still think about her?””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“She was innocent.””

Daniel shrugged.

“Innocence is a luxury.””

I felt sick listening to him.

“What happened to Naomi?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You really don’t remember anything, do you?””

I stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

He smiled.

“Your mother made sure you forgot.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She knew the truth would destroy you.””

My father looked furious.

“Don’t lie to him.””

Daniel laughed.

“You’re still protecting him?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t just hide your memories, Ryan.””

I felt my breathing change.

“She helped erase them.””

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Daniel smiled.

“There it is.””

He pointed at me.

“That same denial.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

But I couldn’t move.

Because something inside me was changing.

Fragments.

Images.

A woman crying.

A baby in my arms.

A car driving away.

My mother saying:

“Ryan, you have to forget.””

I grabbed my head.

The memories came like lightning.

Not complete.

Not clear.

But enough.

I remembered Naomi.

I remembered Lila.

I remembered holding my daughter as a baby.

I remembered promising Naomi I would come back.

Then I remembered the night everything changed.

A crash.

A fight.

A man standing over me.

Daniel.

I looked up.

“You were there.””

The smile disappeared from Daniel’s face.

“You remember.””

I stood slowly.

“You took my daughter.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And you survived.””

I stared at him.

The man who had stolen years of my life.

The man who had turned my family into strangers.

The man who believed fear would keep him powerful forever.

But he made one mistake.

He forgot something.

I wasn’t the same twenty-one-year-old man he broke.

I was a father now.

And fathers fight differently.

Daniel looked at me.

“You think this ends because you remember?””

I looked at my daughters.

Then at Marcus.

Then at the family I had lost and somehow found again.

“No.””

May you like

I stepped forward.

“It ends because I’m done forgetting.””
