Chapter 10: The Officer Who Returned From The Dead
The man walking toward us did not hurry.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Everyone else looked afraid.
The officers.
The security team.
Even Admiral Reed.
But this man moved calmly, as if he already knew how the story would end.
As if he had been waiting twenty years for this exact moment.
Victor stood in front of me.
Not aggressively.
Protectively.
“Stay behind me,” he whispered.
I almost argued.
Almost.
But there was something in his voice that stopped me.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the careful concern he had shown before.
Not the fear of losing control.
The fear of seeing a nightmare become real.
The man stopped several feet away.
He removed his Navy cap.
His face was older than the photograph.
But I recognized him.
The same eyes.
The same calm expression.
The same person from the picture.
Admiral Reed stepped forward.
“Captain Thomas Vale.””
The name echoed through the ceremony grounds.
Daniel looked shocked.
“Captain Vale?””
The older man smiled slightly.
“Still surprised to see me?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was.
Victor’s voice was low.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
Captain Vale looked at him.
“And you’re supposed to be retired.””
The tension between them felt ancient.
Like two people carrying the weight of a war nobody else knew about.
I looked at Victor.
“Who is he?””
Victor didn’t look away from Vale.
“He was your father’s closest friend.””
The answer made my stomach tighten.
A friend.
Another person my father trusted.
Another person connected to his disappearance.
Vale looked at me.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“So this is her.””
My skin went cold.
“She?””
Victor’s voice hardened.
“Don’t talk about her like she’s evidence.””
Vale ignored him.
“Nia Carter.””
Hearing my full name from a stranger felt wrong.
“How do you know me?””
Vale took a slow breath.
“Because I knew your father.””
I stepped forward before Victor could stop me.
“Everyone knew my father.””
My voice shook.
“Everyone except me.””
The words landed.
Vale looked at me.
And for a moment, I thought I saw guilt.
Then it disappeared.
“Your father was a complicated man.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s what people say when they don’t want to explain.””
Admiral Reed looked at Vale.
“Why are you here?””
Vale smiled faintly.
“Because someone finally opened the door.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Vale looked toward the black limousine.
Then back at us.
“It means the evidence is no longer hidden.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“You know about the evidence?””
Vale looked at me.
“I know more than anyone.””
Victor moved forward.
“You knew where she was.””
Vale didn’t deny it.
The silence was enough.
My blood ran cold.
“You knew?””
I looked at Victor.
Then Vale.
“You all knew?””
Vale’s expression softened.
“Nia—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I want answers.””
The ceremony grounds were completely silent.
The same place where people had gathered to celebrate service and honor now felt like the scene of a confession.
Vale looked at me.
“Your father wasn’t just investigating a leak.””
“Then what was he investigating?””
Vale glanced at Victor.
Then Admiral Reed.
Finally, he answered.
“An operation.””
The word meant nothing.
But the way he said it did.
“What kind of operation?””
Vale looked around.
“An operation involving people inside the military.””
Victor’s face tightened.
“You don’t get to tell her half the truth.””
Vale smiled sadly.
“Neither did you.””
The words hit Victor.
And I noticed.
Because Victor didn’t fight back.
“You were there,” Victor said quietly.
Vale nodded.
“Yes.””
“For the final mission.””
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“The mission where my father disappeared?””
Vale looked at me.
“Yes.””
I waited.
For an explanation.
For something.
Instead, he said:
“He didn’t disappear.””
My breath stopped.
“What?””
Vale looked at Evelyn.
“She knows.””
My mother looked down.
I turned toward her.
“Mom?””
Her face was pale.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew he was alive?””
The silence answered.
My knees almost gave out.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of believing my father walked away.
Twenty years of missing someone who might have still existed.
Victor looked devastated.
“Nia…”
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
His silence hurt more than anything.
I stepped back.
Everyone had known pieces.
Everyone had chosen what I could handle.
But nobody asked what I wanted.
Vale spoke quietly.
“Your father stayed hidden because he discovered the person behind the operation.””
“Who?””
Vale looked at me.
“The person who ordered his disappearance.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Vale opened his mouth.
Then a gunshot echoed.
The sound shattered the ceremony.
Everyone dropped.
Officers moved instantly.
Victor grabbed me and pulled me behind the podium.
Admiral Reed shouted commands.
The crowd screamed.
Then silence.
Not because everything was safe.
Because everyone realized the shot had not been aimed at us.
It had been aimed at Captain Vale.
He was standing.
But barely.
Blood appeared on his shoulder.
Daniel rushed forward.
“Medical team!””
Victor looked toward the direction of the shot.
Then whispered:
“They’re still here.””
I looked at Vale.
The man who had returned from the dead.
The man who knew my father’s secret.
The man who had just been attacked before revealing the truth.
As officers surrounded him, Vale grabbed my wrist.
His grip was weak.
But his eyes were clear.
“Nia.””
I leaned closer.
“What?””
He struggled to speak.
“The person who destroyed your family…”
A pause.
“The person who made your father disappear…”
His eyes moved toward the crowd.
May you like
Then back to me.
“Is someone you have already met.””
