The Daughter They Denied / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Name Buried In Silence

Victor Hale had faced battles most people only saw in movies.

He had stood in front of enemies.

He had commanded soldiers.

He had worn medals earned through sacrifice.

But standing in front of me, holding my father’s final letter, he looked like a man who had lost a war years ago.

A war nobody knew existed.

I stared at him.

“Tell me.””

Victor didn’t move.

“Tell me what secret my father died protecting.””

The question stayed between us.

Admiral Reed looked away.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Even the officers nearby seemed to understand that whatever came next was bigger than a family argument.

Victor finally spoke.

“Your father discovered something.””

“What?””

“A betrayal.””

The word was simple.

But it carried weight.

“By who?””

Victor looked at the harbor.

“I can’t answer that yet.””

My anger rose immediately.

“Yet?””

I stepped closer.

“When?””

His eyes returned to mine.

“When I know you’re safe.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m done with people deciding when I’m ready.””

My voice broke.

“But you’re right about one thing.””

I looked at the letter.

“My father died with this secret.””

I looked back at Victor.

“And I’m alive with it.””

Victor was silent.

Then he nodded.

“You’re more like him than you realize.””

I hated how much that sentence affected me.

Because I wanted to be angry.

I wanted Victor to be just another person keeping me in the dark.

But something about him felt different.

He wasn’t hiding because he wanted control.

He was hiding because he was afraid.

And that scared me more.

I turned toward Evelyn.

“What did you know?””

She closed her eyes.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to cry now.””

Her face fell.

“I’m not saying that to hurt you.””

“Then tell me.””

The silence stretched.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your father wasn’t just a Navy officer.””

Victor looked at her.

But she continued.

“He was investigating something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Something inside the Navy.””

The harbor suddenly felt colder.

I looked at Admiral Reed.

He didn’t deny it.

That was the part that terrified me.

“Were you involved?””

I asked him.

The admiral’s expression tightened.

“Not in the way you think.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No,” he admitted.

“It isn’t.””

I laughed quietly.

Everyone around me had mastered the art of saying everything except the truth.

Victor stepped forward.

“Your father discovered someone was selling information.””

My eyes widened.

“Military information?””

Victor nodded.

“And he was close to proving who it was.””

“Who?””

Victor looked toward Evelyn.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

My heart dropped.

“Why are you looking at her?””

Victor didn’t answer.

My mother stepped back.

“Nia, listen to me.””

But I couldn’t.

Because suddenly every memory felt suspicious.

Every locked drawer.

Every changed subject.

Every warning.

I looked at her.

“Were you involved?””

The question hurt both of us.

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Victor watched her carefully.

Then said something I would never forget.

“She wasn’t the person your father was investigating.””

Relief hit me.

But it disappeared when he continued.

“She was the person who helped him hide the evidence.””

I stared.

“What?””

Evelyn looked down.

“I was trying to protect him.””

“And me?””

Her silence answered.

I felt something inside me crack.

“You let me believe he abandoned us.””

“I had to.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“You chose.””

Evelyn began crying.

“I chose to keep you alive.””

The words sounded exactly like before.

But this time, they felt different.

Because now I understood.

She wasn’t lying about being afraid.

She was lying about what that fear cost me.

Suddenly, a security officer ran toward us.

“Admiral!””

Everyone turned.

The officer looked shaken.

“We found the person who left the photograph.””

Victor immediately reacted.

“Where?””

The officer hesitated.

“They weren’t on the property.””

“Then how did you find them?””

The officer swallowed.

“Because they wanted us to.””

He handed over a small device.

A phone.

Victor stared at it.

“What is this?””

The officer looked at me.

“It was addressed to Nia Carter.””

My heart stopped.

Victor took it.

The screen lit up.

One video file.

No message.

No explanation.

Just a name.

The file title.

*THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FATHER*

Nobody spoke.

Victor looked at me.

“Nia…”

I stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone watched as I took the phone from his hand.

My fingers hovered over the screen.

For twenty years, people had protected me from the truth.

But maybe the truth was the only thing that could finally set me free.

I pressed play.

The screen went black.

Then a voice appeared.

A voice I had not heard since childhood.

A voice I thought I would never hear again.

My father.

“Nia…”

My breath caught.

The entire world disappeared.

Then his voice continued.

“If you’re hearing this, it means your mother made the choice I feared she would make.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She covered her mouth.

My father continued.

“And it means Victor failed to keep his promise.””

Victor closed his eyes.

Then my father said the words that made everyone around me freeze.

“The person who betrayed me is not who you think.””

The video paused for a second.

A shadow moved across the screen.

Then my father whispered:

“Because the person who destroyed our family…”

The screen cut.

And the next name appeared.

I stopped breathing.

Because it was a name I knew.

A name standing right in front of me.

May you like

A name nobody had expected.

*Evelyn Carter.*
