The Daughter They Denied / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Daughter Who Was The Key

For a long time, nobody spoke.

The recording had ended.

But my father’s final words remained in the air.

*“They are the reason Nia was born.””*

I hated how much that sentence terrified me.

Because after everything I had learned, I thought I had finally reached the center of the mystery.

I was wrong.

The truth was still deeper.

Victor stared at the recorder like it had personally betrayed him.

Admiral Reed looked broken.

My mother looked like she had been waiting twenty years for this exact moment.

And I?

I felt like I was standing outside my own life, watching strangers explain it to me.

I turned toward Evelyn.

“Tell me.””

She didn’t move.

“Mom.””

Her eyes lifted.

The pain there was impossible to ignore.

“I wanted you to have a normal life.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

She nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Then tell me why I was born.””

The question hurt everyone.

Especially her.

Evelyn looked at the ocean.

“Your father and I didn’t know at first.””

“Know what?””

“That you were connected to everything.””

I frowned.

“Connected how?””

She took a breath.

“Your father discovered the operation before you were born.””

Victor stepped closer.

“He found financial records. Communication logs. Evidence of people inside the system working together.””

I looked at him.

“And me?””

Victor answered carefully.

“Your father discovered the person behind it was searching for something.””

“What?””

“A code.””

The word sounded ridiculous.

Until I remembered the flash drive.

The encryption.

The fact that my father had created something only I could unlock.

My stomach tightened.

“You’re saying I’m a password?””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“You’re a person.””

His voice became softer.

“But your father knew one day someone would try to use you.””

I looked at Reed.

“Why?””

The admiral looked away.

“Because your father discovered the operation wasn’t just about stolen information.””

“What was it about?””

Reed answered.

“Control.””

The word was simple.

But terrifying.

“They wanted access to systems, resources, identities,” Reed continued.

“Your father found evidence that could destroy powerful people.””

I looked down.

“And he hid it in me?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“Your father protected you from it.””

“Then why did he make me the key?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because he ran out of options.””

The answer hurt.

Because I understood.

My father had not chosen this life for me.

He had tried to prevent it.

Victor looked at the recorder.

“The message was incomplete.””

Reed nodded.

“Because it was interrupted.””

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

But this time, I noticed something.

They weren’t hiding a person.

They were hiding the possibility.

The possibility that the enemy was still close.

I looked at Reed.

“You approved my protection order.””

“Yes.””

“You helped my mother hide me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did my father say someone betrayed him?””

Reed looked at me.

“Because I failed him.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I thought I could protect everyone.””

He looked toward the harbor.

“I was wrong.””

Before I could respond, every phone nearby buzzed at the same time.

The officers froze.

Daniel looked at his screen.

His face turned pale.

“What is it?””

He handed the phone to Victor.

A video had been sent.

No message.

Just a file.

Victor opened it.

The screen showed an empty room.

Then a voice.

A voice I recognized.

Captain Vale.

But something was wrong.

He was not in the hospital.

He was somewhere else.

Bound to a chair.

My blood ran cold.

A person stood behind him.

Hidden.

Only a silhouette.

The voice spoke.

“You spent twenty years protecting the wrong daughter.””

Victor’s face changed.

“No.””

The person continued.

“Marcus Reed thought he could hide the truth.””

The camera moved closer to Vale.

“But he forgot one thing.””

A pause.

“Every secret has an owner.””

I stared at the screen.

Then the person said:

“Nia Carter was never the target.””

The room went silent.

“She was the bait.””

The video cut.

Nobody moved.

Then my mother whispered:

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

Not for herself.

For me.

“The person behind this…”

She stopped.

“Mom.””

Her voice broke.

“I know who it is.””

Everyone looked at her.

Victor stepped closer.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes told me the answer was worse than anything I imagined.

“The person who started this…”

She swallowed.

“Is the person who brought me into your father’s life.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Victor.

Then Reed.

Then finally me.

“Your father thought he discovered an enemy.””

A tear fell down her face.

“But he discovered the truth too late.””

I whispered:

“What truth?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“The enemy wasn’t trying to destroy our family.””

May you like

She opened them.

“They created it.””
