Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Mother’s Last Secret

The room went silent after Vanessa said it.

Because those words changed everything.

Not the necklace.

Not the pawn shop receipt.

Not even the hidden letter.

Those were things that could be explained.

But this?

This was different.

My stepmother knew something my father didn’t.

Something my mother had told her before she disappeared.

Daniel slowly released Vanessa’s wrist.

He looked almost confused.

Like his mind was trying to reject what his ears had heard.

“You were with her?””

Vanessa rubbed her wrist.

“I didn’t say that.””

“You said she told you the word.””

“She did.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked away.

And that one small movement made my father’s expression change.

Because he knew.

She was hiding something again.

“Vanessa.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“I was there the night before she left.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

The night before she left.

Not the night before she died.

Not the night before she vanished forever.

Left.

Like she had a choice.

Like she had walked out the door.

I looked at my dad.

He looked like someone had punched the air out of him.

“You never told me that.””

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Scared of what, Vanessa?””

She looked at him.

“Of what would happen if I told you.””

My father laughed quietly.

Again, no humor.

“You knew something about my wife disappearing and you said nothing?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Vanessa flinched.

For once, she didn’t argue.

Evelyn stood near the doorway, watching everything.

Then she spoke.

“She knew.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“Your wife suspected Vanessa knew more than she admitted.””

Vanessa immediately turned.

“That’s not true.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why did she give you the word?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked between them.

“What word?””

I looked down at the letter.

The question still sat inside my chest.

The word my mother made me remember.

The word she said would tell me who I could trust.

But before I could say it, Vanessa spoke.

“She wanted me to help Lily.””

Daniel stared.

“You?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“She knew something was wrong.””

“What was wrong?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She thought someone was watching her.””

The room changed.

Even Noah stopped moving.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

“You know the secret word.””

“Yes.””

“You were there before she disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You sold her necklace.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I made a mistake.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s not a mistake.””

His voice cracked.

“That’s taking the last thing my daughter had from her mother.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward me.

For a moment, I thought I saw regret.

Real regret.

But then something else appeared.

Fear.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“I don’t.””

He looked at her.

“But I’m going to.””

He turned to Evelyn.

“Tell me everything.””

The older woman hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Everything.””

Evelyn looked at me.

Then nodded.

“Your wife was investigating missing money from the company.””

Daniel frowned.

“I already heard that.””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“She wasn’t just investigating.””

She reached into her handbag again.

This time she pulled out a small black notebook.

My father stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your wife gave it to me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?””

“Because she knew someone would come looking.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You had that?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Yes.””

“You said you didn’t have anything.””

“I said I didn’t have anything I was ready to show.””

Daniel took the notebook.

The cover was worn.

The edges were bent.

It looked like something my mother had carried everywhere.

He opened it.

Pages filled with handwriting.

Dates.

Names.

Numbers.

My father’s eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Evelyn looked serious.

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

“Ask her.””

Daniel turned.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Daniel…”

“What is in this notebook?””

She didn’t answer.

He flipped through another page.

Then another.

Suddenly, he stopped.

“What is Rachel’s name doing here?””

My heart jumped.

Rachel.

Vanessa’s sister.

The name everyone seemed afraid of.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I knew this would happen.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“You were never supposed to find this.””

Those words made the room colder.

Daniel stared.

“Never supposed to?””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“Your wife wasn’t just looking into money.””

“What else?””

“She was looking into people.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“People close to her.””

The words landed slowly.

Daniel looked around the room.

At Vanessa.

At Evelyn.

At the notebook.

At me.

“Are you saying someone in this house was involved?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was terrifying.

I held the letter tighter.

Then I remembered something.

A tiny detail.

Something I had forgotten.

Something from the night my mother disappeared.

“Dad.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

I looked at the notebook.

“I remember something.””

Daniel immediately came to me.

“What do you remember?””

I closed my eyes.

“The night Mommy left…”

My voice became smaller.

“She was arguing with someone.””

Daniel froze.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Lily, think.””

I tried.

I really tried.

The memory was like a picture underwater.

Blurry.

Fading.

But one thing stayed.

“A woman.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“A woman?””

I nodded.

“She was angry.””

“What did she say?””

I swallowed.

“She said…”

I touched my necklace.

The necklace I was wearing now.

The one my mother had wanted me to keep.

“She said, ‘You should have never found out.’”

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at the notebook.

“Lily…”

He knelt beside me.

“Did you see her face?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“What else?””

I thought harder.

Then suddenly…

I remembered a sound.

A name.

A voice.

“She called her…”

My heart started racing.

“What?””

I looked at Vanessa.

Because I finally understood why she looked terrified.

“She called her Rachel.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

Noah whispered:

“Mom…”

Daniel slowly stood.

His face had gone completely still.

“Your sister was there that night?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Still nothing.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone looked.

The screen lit up on the coffee table.

One name appeared.

Rachel.

Vanessa stared at it.

Nobody touched the phone.

Nobody needed to.

Because the answer was already there.

Rachel wasn’t just part of the past.

She was still connected to the secret.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

And for the first time, she looked truly trapped.

The phone kept ringing.

And then a message appeared beneath the caller’s name.

One sentence.

May you like

One sentence that made Daniel’s face lose all color.

*“Tell them the truth before I do.””*
