Chapter 6: The Call From The Woman Who Vanished

Nobody moved.

The message stayed glowing on Vanessa’s phone.

Five words.

That was all.

But somehow, those five words felt heavier than every secret that had been uncovered inside our house.

*Tell them the truth before I do.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at the phone.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What?””

“Answer the phone.””

Her fingers trembled.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

She didn’t respond.

And that silence told him everything.

“Because you know who it is.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

My father stepped away from her.

“Rachel.””

Vanessa nodded.

My stomach twisted.

The name that had appeared like a shadow over every conversation.

The name connected to my mother.

The name that seemed to frighten everyone except me.

Because I didn’t know her.

But everyone else did.

Daniel picked up the phone from the table.

“Then I’ll answer.””

“No.””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

The movement was so sudden that everyone froze.

Daniel looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with panic.

“Because you don’t know what you’re about to hear.””

Daniel slowly removed her hand.

“I’ve spent seven years not knowing.””

His voice cracked.

“Seven years wondering if my wife was dead, if she was alive, if she left me, if I failed her.””

He looked at the phone.

“I think I deserve the truth.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel pressed the answer button.

He put it on speaker.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice came through.

“Vanessa?””

Everyone froze.

Rachel.

Her voice sounded older than I expected.

Tired.

Like someone who had been running from something for a long time.

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

“No.””

A pause.

Then the woman’s voice changed.

“Who is this?””

“Daniel Carter.””

Silence.

Long enough that I could hear my own breathing.

Then Rachel whispered:

“You found the necklace.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“How do you know about the necklace?””

Another pause.

Then Rachel answered.

“Because your wife made sure someone would.””

My father’s face tightened.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

The silence on the other end became painful.

I saw Daniel close his eyes.

Like he was preparing himself for an answer he had waited years to hear.

Then Rachel said:

“I don’t know.””

The room felt frozen.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“You were there the night she disappeared.””

Vanessa looked down.

Rachel went silent.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then the phone.

“You were there.””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Why?””

Rachel sighed.

“Because your wife called me.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would she call your sister?””

Vanessa looked away.

Evelyn answered before Rachel could.

“Because your wife trusted her.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Trusted her?””

Rachel spoke again.

“She thought I was the only person who could help.””

Daniel gripped the phone tighter.

“Help with what?””

The line went quiet.

Then Rachel said:

“Someone was trying to destroy her.””

My father looked at the notebook.

“The company?””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice lowered.

“Her life.””

Nobody spoke.

I held onto the edge of my dress.

My mother.

Destroyed.

The words felt too big.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Scared of Rachel?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Scared of what would happen if the truth came out.””

Daniel followed her eyes.

To me.

Then his expression hardened.

“What does Lily have to do with this?””

Rachel answered.

“Everything.””

My body went cold.

Daniel’s voice became dangerous.

“Explain.””

“Your wife knew something happened before Lily was born.””

“What?””

Rachel continued.

“She found documents.””

“What documents?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Then what do you know?””

“I know she hid something because she was afraid someone would use Lily against her.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“No one is using my daughter.””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“That’s what your wife wanted too.””

I looked down at the necklace.

My mother’s necklace.

The one everyone kept talking about.

The one everyone had been afraid of.

“What’s inside it?”” I asked.

Everyone turned toward me.

Daniel knelt.

“Sweetheart…”

I looked at the phone.

“She said the necklace was important.””

Rachel became quiet.

Then she said:

“Lily?””

“Yes.””

The woman’s voice changed.

Like she was talking to someone she had known since before.

“I’m sorry.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because your mother wanted to tell you herself.””

My eyes filled.

“She loved you very much.””

Daniel looked away.

I could tell those words hurt him.

Because they were the words he had needed to hear for years.

Rachel continued.

“The necklace has a hidden compartment.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at it.

“What?””

“Your wife had something placed inside.””

I touched the necklace around my neck.

My fingers searched along the edges.

I had worn it for years.

But I had never looked closely.

“Open it,” Rachel said.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at me.

“Can we?””

I nodded.

Slowly, he took the necklace from around my neck.

His hands were careful.

Like he was holding a piece of my mother herself.

He examined it.

Then frowned.

“I don’t see anything.””

Rachel spoke.

“Look at the back.””

Daniel turned it over.

There was a tiny marking.

One I had never noticed.

A small line.

Almost invisible.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“That’s it.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I knew there was something.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your wife asked me not to.””

Daniel looked frustrated.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel said:

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“When you open it…”

Her voice shook.

“You need to prepare yourself.””

My father looked at the necklace.

“What’s inside?””

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Proof that your wife didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave.””

My father stopped breathing.

I saw it.

The tiny change in his face.

The hope.

The fear.

Both at the same time.

“Then why did she disappear?””

Rachel’s voice became quieter.

“Because she was trying to protect Lily.””

My fingers tightened.

Protect me.

From what?

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“I…”

She stopped.

Then her phone vibrated again.

Another message.

Nobody wanted to look.

But everyone did.

This time, it wasn’t from Rachel.

It was from an unknown number.

Daniel picked up the phone.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What does it say?”” Vanessa whispered.

Daniel slowly turned the screen toward her.

The message was short.

But it destroyed the last bit of calm in the room.

*“If Daniel opens the necklace, he will learn what Vanessa helped me hide.””*

Vanessa stepped backward.

Noah covered his mouth.

Evelyn looked terrified.

And Daniel stared at his wife.

Because for the first time…

May you like

he wasn’t wondering if Vanessa knew the truth.

He was wondering how much of it she had helped bury.
