Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden Inside The Necklace
Daniel did not say a word.
That was the part that scared me the most.
My father was never someone who shouted first.
He was the kind of person who became quieter when he was hurt.
And now, standing in the middle of our living room with my mother’s necklace in his hand, he looked like someone who had just discovered the ground beneath him was not as solid as he believed.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Daniel…”
He didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed on the message.
*If Daniel opens the necklace, he will learn what Vanessa helped me hide.*
I didn’t understand everything.
But I understood enough.
My stepmother had been hiding something.
Something connected to my mother.
Something connected to me.
Daniel finally looked up.
“How long?””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“How long have you known?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
He looked at the phone.
“Don’t do this again.””
His voice was low.
“Don’t stand there and pretend you don’t understand.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I knew your wife was afraid.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
“I knew she was planning something.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“How long have you known she left something inside that necklace?””
Vanessa looked down.
The silence answered.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might cry.
But he didn’t.
He just looked tired.
“So you knew.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
No one moved.
Even Noah looked shocked.
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew my daughter was carrying the answer to what happened to her mother.””
“I didn’t know exactly what was inside.””
“But you knew there was something.””
“Yes.””
“And you sold it.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I was going to get it back.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Get it back?””
“Yes.””
“You sold my daughter’s necklace at a pawn shop and expected to just buy it back later?””
“I needed time.””
“For what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel looked at the receipt.
“For whatever you were trying to hide.””
Vanessa looked away.
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I wondered if she had ever looked at me and seen me as a daughter.
Or if she had always seen me as a reminder of something she wanted gone.
My thoughts were interrupted when Evelyn stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
He turned.
“What?””
“You need to open it.””
Everyone looked at the necklace.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No?””
Her voice became urgent.
“Not here.””
“Why?””
“Because once you see what’s inside, there’s no going back.””
Daniel held the necklace tightly.
“There hasn’t been going back since the day my wife disappeared.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
She looked like she wanted to say something.
But she didn’t.
Daniel sat at the table.
He placed the necklace under the bright light.
I stood beside him.
My small hands rested on the edge of the chair.
“What if it breaks?””
Daniel looked at me.
“It won’t.””
“How do you know?””
He smiled sadly.
“Because your mother was careful with everything she loved.””
My eyes burned.
Nobody had said something like that about her in a long time.
Daniel examined the necklace again.
Then he noticed the tiny opening on the back.
Using a small tool from the kitchen drawer, he carefully pressed the hidden piece.
A soft click filled the room.
Everyone froze.
The necklace opened.
Inside was a tiny compartment.
Empty?
No.
Something was there.
A small folded piece of paper.
And a tiny silver key.
Daniel carefully removed them.
My heart raced.
“What is the key for?””
Nobody knew.
He unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was my mother’s.
Immediately, Daniel stopped.
His fingers trembled.
“What?””
I looked at him.
He couldn’t speak.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Daniel?””
He swallowed.
Then he read the first line aloud.
“Daniel…”
His voice broke.
He continued.
If you are reading this, then Lily is finally old enough to know the truth.
My father looked at me.
Then back at the letter.
I am sorry I could not tell you everything before.
A tear moved down Daniel’s face.
I had never seen my dad cry like that.
Not even at my mother’s funeral.
I need you to understand something. I never left because I stopped loving you or Lily.
I covered my mouth.
The room became blurry.
Daniel stopped reading.
He pressed the paper against the table.
Vanessa looked away.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
My father continued.
Someone close to us was watching everything I did.
The air disappeared from the room.
They knew about the documents. They knew about the investigation. They knew I was getting close.
Daniel looked up.
“Documents.””
Evelyn nodded.
He did.
I trusted only three people with pieces of the truth.
Evelyn.
Rachel.
And Vanessa.
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She looked broken.
Daniel lowered the paper.
“You were one of them.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice shook.
“Because she asked me.””
“Your wife trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you betray her?””
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“I didn’t.””
Daniel looked at the letter.
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
And that made me afraid.
Because every time adults looked at me before telling the truth, it meant the truth was painful.
“I made a mistake.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Your wife came to me because she knew someone was following her.””
I listened.
“She asked me to keep Lily safe.””
Daniel frowned.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why you?””
“Because she believed I would protect Lily.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because the woman standing in front of me had accused me of stealing.
She had made me cry.
But my mother had once trusted her.
Why?
Daniel read more.
His face changed.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“What does it say?””
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“It says…”
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“She wrote that if anything happened, Vanessa had to take Lily away from danger.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel stared.
“You knew.””
“I was trying.””
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“You knew my wife thought something might happen.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Vanessa cried silently.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel turned the paper over.
There was more.
A final line.
A sentence written at the bottom.
He read it.
Then he went completely still.
“What?””
Evelyn asked.
Daniel didn’t respond.
He looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the small silver key.
“What does it say?”” I whispered.
My father’s voice was barely audible.
“It says…”
He swallowed.
“‘The person who caused this is someone we both trusted.’”
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel noticed something else.
A small symbol drawn beside the sentence.
A symbol I recognized.
Because I had seen it before.
On a box in our attic.
A box Vanessa had told me never to touch.
Daniel looked at me.
“Lily.””
“Yes?””
“Where did you see this symbol?””
I pointed toward the ceiling.
“Upstairs.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked terrified.
“Don’t go upstairs.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
Her voice shook.
“Because that box…”
She stopped.
Daniel waited.
“What about the box?””
Vanessa looked at the symbol on the paper.
Then at the ceiling.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“Because your mother didn’t hide the truth inside the necklace.””
A chill ran through the room.
Daniel stood.
“Then where did she hide it?””
Vanessa looked toward the attic door.
May you like
And answered:
“Inside the box she told me never to let you find.””
